No sympathy for people who booked a recent holiday

fairparie · 26/07/2020 07:13

Headlines this morning have got me cross. People who are 'devastated' that their holiday to Spain that they booked last week won't go ahead as they can't quarantine on return and lost all their money.
How stupid to book a holiday when you know it is a risk. We were going to go away and had not booked anything as was leaving it till the last minute. . We still could but I would not expect my work to pay for me in quarantine on top of two weeks away. It is understandable if I had booked before the pandemic but why should a firm pay for quarantine for those who knowingly knew it may be a risk.
I have full sympathy for those that booked before the pandemic and at least they will be insured. But c'mon how can you be upset that you have lost your money for a holiday you booked last week and now can't go on due to quarantine?

I feel sorry for them, yes I wouldn't choose to go but what about people who are visiting family?

i'm holidaying in the UK but not everyone can afford that or can find anything.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 07:33

Devastated to lose money I can empathise with.

Booking a holiday in a pandemic "because you need a break" I can't.

There's no denying this is unbelievably shut and NHS and care staff workers have seen scenes that'll haunt them forever.

But we need to stop being so human about this. We need to change our mindset.

No one actually needed to book a holiday to Spain. They may have needed a break. But the 2 aren't the same thing.

I also find it ironic people are fearful of a second wave and quite happy to critics the governments handling. Yet they aren't happy to do their bit and use their own common sense.

Government have been shit and slow. This time they've acted.

We can't have it both ways.

Rainallnight · 26/07/2020 07:33

I’m with @giggly on this one. (Not that I’m a nurse). We’re still in the middle of a pandemic and going abroad just now isn’t very sensible. Of course I’m sorry for people who’ve lost money, but it wasn’t the best year to book a holiday abroad.

My mum died a couple of weeks into lockdown and a tiny, socially distanced funeral, grieving and looking after two small DC every day in lockdown has been the hardest time of my whole life. Still doesn’t entitle me to a holiday.

mummyh2016 · 26/07/2020 07:33

I've seen a few people on Twitter worrying as they or their partners are doctors. Who I'm presuming will have been working their arse off since February/March. Still, serves them right doesn't it OP Hmm

Whathewhatnow · 26/07/2020 07:34

I love how travel within the uk confers absolutely no risk at all but going abroad is the most selfish thing you can do. Yes yes aircraft but here's hoping those off to Devon and Cornwall have bladders of steel and dont need to stop at service stations .....oh.

Russellbrandshair · 26/07/2020 07:34

Nice bit of furlough bashing there, guess you couldn't resist eh
It’s not bashing it’s fact. Friends of mine have been furloughed in full pay whilst I’ve been to work the entire time. They’ve told me they’ve had a good break. How is that bashing? Guess I touched a nerve 🙄

ItWasNotOK · 26/07/2020 07:35

"At what stage do we accept this and live again"

Maybe when there aren't still hundreds of people dying every day?

"Still, serves them right doesn't it"

Is that what the OP said at all?

mccavitythethird · 26/07/2020 07:35

@Magicbabywaves

I see what you’re saying, but I wouldn’t take delight in this. Maybe those people are nurses etc, and this was their one chance at a holiday.
It's the case for a lot of us but risking money booking last week is foolish in the extreme. We really want a holiday as it's been an awful year with bereavements but we've opted for some days out instead. One of the people complaining was a teacher in England who was due to be away next week and said her job meant she couldn't quarantine but that's ridiculous, we don't go back until September so she could quarantine.
SallyWD · 26/07/2020 07:37

I have sympathy for them OP. They were told by the government it was OK to fly to these countries with air bridges - and they probably just trusted the government on this. Yes of course there's a risk travelling but at the time these air bridges came in to place, the infection rate was much lower in Spain than in UK. They were probably more at risk going out and about in the UK. The problem is the situation can change quickly and has done. Some people found lockdown very difficult. I don't blame them for wanting a break and booking one when the government said it was OK.

ScribblyGum · 26/07/2020 07:37

OP, it’s 7o’clock on a Sunday morning.

You are posting about people losing both their money and their much looked forward to holidays.

Have a go at flexing your sympathy muscles for these people. It costs you nothing. Why not chose kindness over gloating? Ask yourself what are you hoping to gain from posting a thread like this?

Forgone90 · 26/07/2020 07:38

Well op your a bellend

allfalldown47 · 26/07/2020 07:39

What an unpleasant post.

ell9 · 26/07/2020 07:39

What a horrible person you sound.

ItWasNotOK · 26/07/2020 07:41

@ell9 and yet judging someone's entire personality on the basis of one post on the internet is what? Nice?

14Daisies · 26/07/2020 07:42

I couldn't agree with you more OP, it made me cross when I saw that article too. Glad I'm not the only one!

Mangofandangoo · 26/07/2020 07:43

You obviously don't have family abroad OP otherwise you might be a bit more sympathetic

ivykaty44 · 26/07/2020 07:43

I think a lot of people will have suffered in different ways during lockdown and a holiday is really healthy way of helping.

Many people will have lost loved ones either to covid19 or other illnesses and had a terrible time - not being able to visit dying relatives etc

booking a holiday and doing something normal will have been a "something to look forward to"

to have now the possible holiday cancelled is such a blow for them.

personal thoughts were to get away and have some time in this country with relatives - but not everyone has the luxury of relatives in a beauty spot 5 days helped me recover somewhat.

I feel sympathy for many having their holidays slashed this year

milveycrohn · 26/07/2020 07:44

Well, people have been told that Sturgeon may decide to quarantine those from England.
Wales have posted notices saying 'Dont come'.
Cornwall has been hostile to tourists.
So that omits large sections of holiday spots in the UK.
Spain have been welcoming of tourists and reduced prices to attract visitors. Many with children, will be trying to get a holiday in before school (hopefully) starts in September.
Portugal are annoyed they have not been included in the air bridges.
So, I have every sympathy for those who may have lost money and / or their much longed for holiday.

Spot on

ivykaty44 · 26/07/2020 07:46

@Mangofandangoo
I hadn't even thought of visiting relatives abroad, again sympathies to those trying to get away to visit loved ones and family

jimmyjammy001 · 26/07/2020 07:46

People should of done their research, it was not widely available in the media with only a few media outlets telling people air bridges could be pulled instantly and so people would need to quarantine when they get back but people's ignorance and it will never happen to me and so people have booked and it has happened

Cartright · 26/07/2020 07:47

Is this satire?

JellyfishandShells · 26/07/2020 07:49

I have a couple of sets of friends who have family living in Spain or have accommodation they can go to, who booked flights when they became available on the understanding that there was a chance in this shifting time that they might not be able to use them as they hoped.

One lot can quarantine on return and are going and the other is not going to use them. They made their own value judgements and aren’t whining.

IKEA888 · 26/07/2020 07:49

I do feel sad for them but it was a risk and I think they should just be gracious about what has happened rather than shouting about how hard done by they are
I am.a nurse and my holiday for may of course was cancelled. I was sad but not angry.

Undervaluedandsad · 26/07/2020 07:51
@Undervaluedandsad your situation however is absolutely heart breaking. Is there any way you could isolate on your return and still go?
We still have a little bit of time to play with, but no, with the quarantine advice in place my employer wouldn’t be sympathetic about me going to Spain and requiring quarantine on return. We will need to lose the money.
