Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

I agree with PP - it's really naive to think everyone will abide by quarantine.

I am due to go to Italy in September. Nobody at work would remember that even if I had told them when I last saw them in early March, why would they? If I were of a mindset to avoid quarantine I could easily do so.

I also agree that self employed people are even more likely to find this an easy thing to do. Not saying they are more likely to do it, before anyone gets all righteous on me, but yes, I think many of us could easily get away with it. And many people will.

The example of the food shop on the way back to the airport is a good one. What if you have to use public transport to get back home? It's not enforceable without much stricter measures which our sloppy government will not bring in. Johnson has just stuck his fingers in his ears, waved his hands and told us all to get on with it.

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:28

I understand telling your employer casually and I understand your employer saying ‘you must abide by quarantine rules’ as a blanket rule but actually asking for a weeks notice notice is a step too far and I expect not even legal

So what you can’t book a last minute break because your boss needs notice? That’s rubbish.

Yes the onus is on you to isolate but by no means should they be policing it

You may have mild symptoms now and not isolating!

Darkdecent · 26/07/2020 15:29

I'm In spain now, due home on tuesday and I'm very pissed off! If Boris had given us more notice I would have flown home asap. the first I heard about it was last night then bam, it happened.

I'm in Alicante where there are very few cases yet I have friends who have returned home yesterday from Barcelona (where cases are lot higher) and they are fine.

One minute were told it's fine to travel, now I have to be stuck at home for two bloody weeks with no pay.

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:29

I also know personally dozens of people who haven’t and intend not to isolate with symptoms or with quarantine rules

People are naive if they think everyone thinks like them

So many I know can’t work from home and won’t get paid so simply go in and keep their mouth shut

MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2020 15:30

Do you mean you can’t ask last minute for a week off work? That was standard for us. It wasn’t a given that you’d get it and they’d need fair warning.

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:31

Dark

It should not have come as a surprise as it’s been mentioned in the news for the past 10 days

I was going barcelona so followed it like a hawk - it was mentioned most days that the isolation was getting reviewed this weekend

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:32

Marsha
No I don’t mean asking for leave as obviously that’s booked in advance but many wait til day or two before for last minute deals so that 7 day rule would mean they can’t do that

Sorry this happened Flowers I do think it's amazing how fast they did it this time, if only they'd done it quickly first time around we might have had fewer cases and fewer deaths Hmm
MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2020 15:34

Daisy yes thought you might mean that, are the people you know away right now? Or going soon. They may have already told work mates if they’re away now

Darkdecent · 26/07/2020 15:35

@daisymay133 really? I genuinely hadn't heard anything about it. my sister rang me last night and told me.

@labyrinthloafer thankyou

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:37

Yes I’ve got friends going Spain next week who plan on saying they’re in Greece - a pool pic very much looks like the next I guess

Not saying I agree of course - I would isolate as I get full pay but not everyone’s in same boat

My mate is in Spain now and won’t get paid so has already said he intends to go back to work. Some employers - esp small business genuinely don’t care that’s why they don’t get paid to isolate

daisymay133 · 26/07/2020 15:38

No I can appreciate if you’re not looking for it or actively watching news then maybe you missed it but it was on most days

My sister is there now too so I can imagine the stress

Yes, a friend of mine does that every year with her DP. They book a fortnight off and then decide where they are going absolutely last minute to get the best deal.

So they will usually already be on leave before they decide right we are going to Corfu/Scotland/Morocco for a week. No way their employer would have to be told where they were going and no way they would know about it.

In addition, most people I know who are office based are still WFH so it isn't even about going back into an office. It's about the wider issues around quarantine like going to shops/using public transport etc. If you wfh how would you get found out and dobbed in?

You could be down the pub every night and all weekend and nobody would be the wiser.

Going to mainland Spain? How? FOC have said no non essential travel.

Pretty much all employers would need notice of holidays.

In my work until 2 weeks ago (which is also when the new rules the quarantine came into force) no holidays had been given since April. Once lockdown was started all leave already approved was cancelled. This is now changed and holidays can once again be booked, but the minimum notice of a month is required unless it's a last minute thing but you would be foolish to book and pray you would get your leave approved.

We have always needed to give a months notice for a holiday where possible.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/07/2020 15:43

Quite sad how many would break rules designed to protect society as it doesn’t suit them personally. I wouldn’t want to be friends with people who did that.

Peaseblossom22 · 26/07/2020 15:44

It’s not just the U.K. though , Norway brought back quarantine for returns from Spain last week , France is considering closing the border and Germany have said restrictions likely to be considered next week . Can you imagine the outcry if others countries did this and we didn’t . To be honest in this instance I think the Government is damned if they do and damned if they don’t .

WhentheDealGoesDown · 26/07/2020 15:47

I don’t want to cast nasturtiums but I bet a lot of people who come home from Spain in the next couple of weeks will visit Tesco, Asda, etc on route home

uniglowooljumper · 26/07/2020 15:48

@labyrinthloafer

I feel I should say, I would never breach H&S, and would 100% grass my colleagues too Smile because I'd be livid if they would risk all of our jobs for the sake of a fricking holiday!
All the more reason for the persons going to say nothing at all about it. As pointed out, only a fool would.
Delatron · 26/07/2020 15:48

Yes see how quickly it can be done. Imagine if they’d been this decisive when all the families were coming back from Italian ski trips and going straight back to work and school....

labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 15:50

@uniglowooljumper I think the risk work would find out is a bigger deterrent than the fine, as the fine will never happen.

But yes, I am sure some will try it on.

MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2020 15:50

Yes that dithering for a couple of days (iirc) was a mistake.

Exactly.
labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 15:52

Our government deserve to be damned Angry

I don't think they've done wrong with Spain this week but they def did wrong with Italy and Spain back at the start.

@WhentheDealGoesDown

Or use an Uber or other form of public transport to return home, all of which are perfectly allowed, and quarantine in a home where the other occupants didn't travel and are therefore at liberty to do as they please, hence, why the entire thing is essentially pointless posturing by the government under the pretext of being seen to do something and giving the hoi polloi some more to froth about whilst they carry on dismantling the state and setting themselves up to get rich off no-deal Brexit. It's working, too, you see!
