A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Sorry just read further down and see it had already been commented on!

MarcelineMissouri · 02/09/2020 18:41

Dr Fauci also saying positive things about vaccines! I realise this is all an IF article rather than that he’s expecting this to happen but I’ll take heart from the fact he’s even considering it as a possibility!

I have also seen lots about how our Oxford vaccine might be fast tracked before the end of the year...fingers crossed...needs final trials of course but it is looking promising.

I'm really starting to feel hopeful now that a vaccine will be available earlier than expected :)

Had a scroll through this thread last night and this morning before my DS left for his first day back at school since March. Helped massively with the nerves!

Layladylay234 · 03/09/2020 09:41

Just another voice of reason here. My mum has just retired as HCA so has friends who have worked all the way through pandemic - one who went to work on ICU and had to move out of home as her partner was shielding. None of them have PTSD, all doing fine and one doesn't even believe there will be a second wave and that things will just carry on as it is with number and death stable and local lockdowns.

Thanks for the news with the vaccine all,I'm convinced we're going to hear more news about it in Oct and have a funny feeling they're aiming to roll it out to vulnerable before Christmas. It would work in everyone's favour wouldn't it - imagine the boom retail and hospitality would get as well as how lovely it would be not to have to worry about passing it onto the vulnerable x

TheKeatingFive · 03/09/2020 09:45

how lovely it would be not to have to worry about passing it onto the vulnerable

This really would be a game changer. For lots of young people, the risk to themselves is so minimal, but they're constrained by what it means for others.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Jeremy Farrar. I'm now following him on Twitter and he posted this yesterday. THIS I think really would be game changer.

Speaking as someone who lives in Leicester is still in official lockdown,it frustrates me so much that we have enormous testing capacity not being used. We have 2 walk in testing centres 20min walk from me and they're never busy. And haven't been in weeks.

littleowl1 · 03/09/2020 10:25

@Jellybean27

Our daughter went back today too. We had a massive wobble last term when school reopened. We were nervous wrecks sending her back. And I got so frustrated. I felt we had all these national headlines with terrifying death numbers and terrifying case numbers but we just had no idea whether it was applicable where we lived.

I am an ex data analyst and decided to scour the national government stats for the number of daily cases in our area, which I found, and left me with mixed emotions. We had virtually no cases in our area - which I was obviously elated about. But I also felt immensely frustrated that all this anxiety had been induced when really we felt very comfortable sending our daughter back with so few local cases.

Anyway I know many on here know this story already. I was so cross and frustrated and felt there were thousands of parents in the same boat that I set up a daily email service. You can sign up to have the daily coronavirus cases in your local council emailed to you each morning, so you know how many cases there are and whether the number of cases is rising or falling etc.

I have found it's helped me know when to worry and by how much! And helped us decide when its sensible to see our elderly relatives and also when we need to baton down the hatches for a few weeks.

If it would help you are more than welcome to sign up. www.covidmessenger.com

That’s really helpful thank you

tootyfruitypickle · 03/09/2020 11:57

Lots of good news today! Including GSK and Sanofi starting vaccine trials!

Not sure what I make of US vaccine claims though...

MarcelineMissouri · 03/09/2020 14:08

@Layladylay234 that’s a great article. I really hope they actually follow through on some of these things for a change!!

MarcelineMissouri · 03/09/2020 14:09

@tootyfruitypickle honestly I’d put Americans vaccine claims on a par with Russia at the moment!! I think trump will do anything to try and win the election and if that means pushing vaccines and treatments before they’re ready then that’s what he’ll do!

tootyfruitypickle · 03/09/2020 15:01

Yes I agree about US. I can’t help feeling a tiny bit hopeful as it’s the CDC though , although the timing is completely suspect!!

BMJ suggesting we might be underestimating how many people have had covid, as different antibody tests produce different results, and mild cases often not producing antibodies (T cells instead).

tobee · 03/09/2020 17:25

Re America I'm hoping that they've got regulatory bodies that can override Trump (and he's not infiltrated them with yes men). Although he'll buy up all supplies! Hmm

I was re reading an interview with Prof Sarah Gilbert of Oxford Vaccine who believes lots of vaccines from different labs and pharmaceutical companies will be available.

Mumsnet need to start two new boards, one for threads like this and all the factual , considered discussions, then another board for all the schools ones. It would stop me making the fatal mistake of trying to discuss on the latter and experiencing a torrent of abuse! It’s like sticking your head out the door during a gale.

Apologies to derail. Just been a bit Shock last couple of days on here . Good to keep this bumped and up to date .

I agree. The 'Coronavirus' forum has basically become the "I'm not sending my child back to school" forum. You have to wade through a sea of repetitive posts before getting to anything with any actual new or interesting information.
herecomesthsun · 03/09/2020 20:59

This is a parenting forum, so is it surprising that people are writing about parenting Smile?

thecatsatonthewall · 03/09/2020 21:10

New saliva tests have proven successful in trials, gives very fast results - 20mins.

Bad news is Hancock is planning on a new law to allow Nurses and Pharmacists to administer vaccines! oh really?

I think we have medical advances in spite of Govt..... not because.

cathyandclare · 03/09/2020 22:26

What's wrong with nurses and pharmacists giving vaccines?

Pomegranatepompom · 03/09/2020 22:50

A new law? He’s an idiot, nurses already give vaccines.

MadameBlobby · 03/09/2020 23:23

And so can pharmacists, I get the flu vaccine at the pharmacy
mac12 · 04/09/2020 07:36

The fast saliva tests is some of the best news I’ve seen for ages. Could really change things Smile
