A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

Nobody I worked with hasn't been affected by the experience which is why so many are leaving. And none of them have been on holiday or find any comfort in the widespread belief that it has all gone away and we are are such a better position now. I guess you know more than us.

Sunshinegirl82 · 02/09/2020 13:42

This is all just a bit odd to be honest. If you have been working in the NHS then how can you not acknowledge we are in a different position now than in March?

In March we could only test those who were hospitalised, we had no treatment options at all, we didn't understand that the virus wasn't purely a respiratory virus. We have made huge strides on all fronts. There is still a long way to go but to suggest we have made no progress just isn't true.

I hope you are receiving support in respect of the impact the situation has had on you.

@VesperLynne

Trying to keep this to positive news please. So to counter that my good friend is an intensive care nurse, they are very quiet - theyve even closed a ward down so for the whole of Sheffield there is now only one unit. She is very confident that we are on top of it.

ICU quiet , really ?. That maybe so where you are but my eldest , who's in her final year , is flat out treating patients in the Clean Zone as students are not allowed in the Red Zone , which in her Hospital is FULL and they have no plans in closing it. I wish I shared your "friends" confidence, perhaps I could get some sleep if I did.

My sister in law icu nurse had no one for weeks

Agree honestly if it was not for this thread I would leave mums net
TheKeatingFive · 02/09/2020 14:10

I’m in Ireland and despite rising case numbers here and higher incidences overall than the U.K., there are 6 people in ICU with Covid in the entire country.

TheKeatingFive · 02/09/2020 14:11

Case numbers have been rising for 7/8 weeks by the way, before anyone starts talking about the ‘lag’.

Jrobhatch29 · 02/09/2020 14:15

God I hate the word lag now 🤣
That is reassuring about Ireland. I have family that live in Belfast and they said the same.

MarcelineMissouri · 02/09/2020 14:16

I agree - I spend plenty of time keeping myself up to date on the news, good and bad. I’m certainly not labouring under delusions of what the situation is, but what’s wrong with having just one bloody thread that is a. Focusing on actual positive news that will hopefully bode well for the future and b. not completely obsessed with schools/rising case numbers/things that have already happened and can’t be undone.

There are so many negative threads I don’t think it’s too much to ask to just leave one untouched!!

Apologies for all the adverts but thats our local paper. Have a look at the figures - my friends "optimism" is fact.

MadameBlobby · 02/09/2020 14:16

Hopefully Oxford/Imperial will develop an effect vaccine but I wouldn't confuse blind optimism with the reality of it.

I saw an interview recently with Jeremy Farrar of the Wellcome Trust who said he was cautiously optimistic of a vaccine this year. I wouldn’t have thought someone of his credentials was prone to “blind optimism”. Also sounds like you might have been quite unlucky with the mix of patients you had, as we know this largely seriously impacts the elderly

Also quite unlucky given there are less than 500 people with Covid in hospital in the whole of England unless you are a particular hot spot.

More balance - I work for a very large acute trust and we have had no Covid patients in ICU for weeks, and less than five in the rest of the hospital (who have been here a while).

tootyfruitypickle · 02/09/2020 15:30

@MadameBlobby that’s great I hadn’t seen that, he’s definitely not prone to blind optimism - quite the opposite !

Cheap steroid hydrocortisone found to be good treatment for sickest patients.

Yeah, we're in exactly the same position as we were in March. Of course we are! Hmm

sproutsandparsnips · 02/09/2020 15:42

According to the PHW website there are no patients in ITU in the whole of Wales. I know there are none in my trust or indeed in the neighbouring trust so this is likely to be true. We have no patients with Covid at all in either hospital in which I work.
This is good news.

Pixel7777 · 02/09/2020 15:47

I'm unsure if this has been shared already upthread, but on this theme of being in a better position now there was a good article on that form the Guardian...

Pixel7777 · 02/09/2020 15:50

“We have become more confident in dealing with it. I think we’d be much less paranoid about the risk of infection. Obviously we wear PPE but the people looking after the patients in intensive care have had a low level of infection – no different from the man in the street – which I think is important because there was a lot of fear,” said Singer.

What helps now is the reduced numbers of patients in intensive care with breathing problems...."

TheKeatingFive · 02/09/2020 15:53

That’s a great article. It’s amazing how much the medical community have learned in a such a short time.

Vaccine could be ready by Xmas! Wouldn't it be lovely if we could have a relatively normal Christmas. Even if the vulnerable are done this year it would be a huge positive

LBC reporting this evening that treatment with cortisone (?) proving to be a game changer for the most seriously affected.
