A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

My mum has just got out of hospital in one of the new northern restriction zones and asked about Covid whilst in. She was told that across the whole hospital trust (4-5 hospitals) there isn’t one Covid patient!

Anecdotally, I could tell you exactly the opposite. Don't hang too much on it. The graphs are alarming at the moment and that's all there is to it.

Alex50 · 16/08/2020 08:04

This is interesting, 40 new coronvirus cases admitted to hospital in the last 24hrs in the whole of England.

Alex50 · 16/08/2020 08:07

@Jihhery can I have a link to the alarming graphs as NHS website shows numbers admitted with Covid as reducing dramatically?

Are you referring to these graphs of the North West region as a whole?

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/healthcare?areaType=nhsregion&areaName=North%20West

Or do you have some more local data?

The ones I posted do admittedly show a few little spikes but on the whole the trend is still downwards at the moment do I don't find them particularly "alarming"

Delta1 · 16/08/2020 09:35

alarmist as opposed to alarming i think.....

Jrobhatch29 · 16/08/2020 09:37

Yes please enlighten us with the alarming graphs

icecreamvan · 16/08/2020 10:41

Why have travel restrictions coming back into force?

Is that positive?

Is the UK somehow superior and different to France, Germany, Spain etc where cases and hospital admissions are rising.

The UK is 2 weeks behind them. We’re heading in the same direction.

I don't buy the 2 weeks behind thing. It is everywhere now and every country is on its own path. It isn't like march when we were behind other countries suerely?
lifeafter50 · 16/08/2020 11:17

The back of PHE is a good thing. Useless quango-good riddance.

Alex50 · 16/08/2020 11:56

@Jrobhatch29 totally agree look at New Zealand, they thought they had got rid of it, the envy of the world but unless you cut yourself from the rest of the world it isn’t possible, it’s everywhere now.

Layladylay234 · 16/08/2020 12:12

Bloody hell,it blows my mind that someone would go onto a thread titled the way this one is and try and post negative stuff. There's enough threads for those, run along please!

pontypridd · 16/08/2020 12:20

Sorry to post on here.

Isn’t it good to have discussion with varying viewpoints?

At the best this thread strikes me as the magical thinking thread. At worst: a government mouthpiece.

Every thread should be open to everyone. What has happened to freedom of speech?

Alex50 · 16/08/2020 12:26

That’s fine as long as you back up your argument when @Jihhery comes on here saying she knows different from the alarming data she has seen, then please share that data? Otherwise you’ just making shit up to suit your agenda

Really though? Or are we sharing the small pieces of positive information that do come through as some light relief from the thousands of doom threads?
Alex50 · 16/08/2020 12:54

@pontypridd I think the other side of the argument sounds more like governments mouth piece to be honest

Wow that was quick! I posted on here a few weeks ago they had funding for this but didnt expect it to be so fast. Great news!

I think this thread is more a place to collate new research and developments, from round the workd. I don't see why they need to be discussed really. There are a million threads on mumsnet where you can be as negative as you like, why not stick to them if that's what you're into?
Ellsbells12 · 16/08/2020 13:15

There are hundreds of threads with facts /figures/scare mongering go and express your free speech there

In fact it's a good organisation in terms of the staff, but has been subjected to continuous interference, micro managing, and undermining by central government, who like to scapegoat PHE for their failings, and who have consistently underfunded public health over the years.
Sunshiney1981 · 16/08/2020 15:37

The ‘alarming graphs’ comment cracks me up. The senior Matron who told us this must have missed the ‘alarming’ number of non-existent patients in her hospitals.

The graphs must be top secret as they still haven't materialised
BessMarvin · 17/08/2020 09:10

The ultimate good news will be when we have a vaccine and no longer have to worry, but this will be a while yet.

So for me, the best news I could hear would be that the saliva test that I last heard of being tested in Southampton is now the one in general use. Has anyone heard anything around this?

(I've a child starting school and a child starting nursery so it'll be an onslaught of new bugs and temperatures and testing so I'd really like to hear it's not the existing invasive test any more.)

Thanks!

KitKatastrophe · 17/08/2020 09:19

I havent seen anything new about the Southampton saliva test trial. However there was news today about a saliva test coming from Yale in the US which looks like a viable alternative. I dont know whether/when we will be able to get it here.
