A trial of a drug which could reduce ICU admission by 79%, and is already in use for other things so doesnt need human trials for side effects etc.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53469839
Promising news about one of the many vaccines in production.

Hospital admissions have not increased, more than 2 weeks after pubs and restaurants reopened.

Lots of reasons to think positive at the moment Smile

@Layladylay234
Thanks for this! We need to be shouting it from the rooftops. This morning was horrified to see lots of kids in ladle on supermarket-we Ned to get the message across that panicking needs to stop, and hope some parents stop
brainwashing g their poor kids.

lifeafter50 · 07/08/2020 13:52

in masks not 'ladle'

lifeafter50 · 07/08/2020 13:53

Tho it was actually in Lidl

Layladylay234 · 07/08/2020 13:54

It's really sad isn't it. We live in Leicester but since lockdowns been lifted,I've been taking my son everywhere that he's missed out on over the past few months. We've been to a waterpark,to farms, zoos - I want to take him to our local museum when it opens soon. I just think the kids mental health has suffered enough without them having terrified parents who can't seem to assess risk realistically.

A good thread on how ICU outcomes have improved.

2020CanDoOne · 07/08/2020 16:39

I've just read his Times article and this part stood out:

"In short, if there is another wave of infections then we are actually pretty well placed to confront it. Why hasn’t this sunk in yet? One problem is that we humans tend to internalise bad news more readily than good news. “Negativity bias”, as psychologists call it, is probably a remnant of our hunter-gatherer past, when an encounter with a predator was worth remembering, but it plays havoc with decision-making at times like this.

The early weeks of the pandemic were a tidal wave of bad news. The death rate was horribly high; the testing system was a disaster. Things have improved since but the good news simply hasn’t sunk in yet. The other day the government said it was planning a big advertising campaign to remind people that they are entitled to a test — a policy that has been in place for months."

cathyandclare · 07/08/2020 16:44

That is great news. The ICNARC data was widely reported at the beginning when it was scary. The Sky journalist is right, the media too often focuses on the bad news.

This looks promising - new technology blocks virus entering cells, can act as vaccine or treatment

A good thread on how ICU outcomes have improved.

I came on here to post this link. Very balanced and sensible.

There is definitely a negativity bias in the media and therefore among people who read mainstream media sources. It is a shame.

This reads like something good to me, if I’m interpreting it correctly

In summary, in children where COVID-19 was detected and contacts followed-up, only one child contact in the school setting was detected as SARS-CoV-2 positive during the follow-up period. The conclusion from these investigations is that child-to-child transmission in schools is uncommon and not the primary cause of SARS-CoV-2 infection of children whose infection onset coincides with the period during which they are attending school.

Contact tracing showed very low transmission between students.

Illusionordelusion · 07/08/2020 18:50

My child wears a mask sometimes purely as a fashion accessory, so don’t assume all parents are anxious.

Yes I read this. Most outbreaks in schools have only been 2 cases and most were adult to adult and didnt involve children

Do you have a link to this, I'd love to read it. Apologies if it was posted earlier and I missed it.

Kit sorry I just lifted it from graph thread. I’m not sure where it’s from, but there’s a few posts atm trying to interpret what’s going on. Be good to have your input if you feel like it

Did anyone see the news tonight? Apparently the original strain of Covid seems to be getting more infectious but less dangerous so more people are getting it but to a lesser degree. This they said could also be down to sunshine, viral load and distance..so very good news!

Molofololo · 07/08/2020 22:24

Oh that sounds good booseysmom which news was it on?

Really interesting data on spain. The CFR has been 0.2% for the past month! 60% asymptomatic, 37% mild and only around 3% needing any hospital treatment

i read that this morning. Their hospital admissions are low arent they

thereplycamefromanchorage · 08/08/2020 18:30

What does CFR stand for?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 08/08/2020 18:38

I’m not sure that about schools is true. At one point there were more cases in schools than in NHS workers.

Studies from Israel and Korea show that children do spread it and are highly infectious. Israel closed it’s schools 2 weeks after opening them as so many were sick.

I also have read somewhere that a lot of Swedish teaching staff have been ill.
