Not sure if this has been suggested. We are supposed to find out next week about how successful the Oxford vaccine has gone aren't we? Do you think Boris Johnson knows the result and that is why he thinks we could be back to normal by November / Christmas? Or am I being naive/ too optimistic?
I just can't see 'normal' by Christmas as things are currently. And I'm fairly relaxed about it all.
I have a first niece / nephew due late October so it would mean the world to be able to meet them this year.

Clavinova Equally - I did wonder why you posted about Boris Johnson's extramarital affairs and Game of Thrones (Raab). You also posted; "It's not mindless criticism of the Government, it's beneficial to us all."

No i actually posted:
It's not mindless criticism of the Government, it's beneficial to us all that they succeed in their handling of it going forward & that also means recognising where improvement in response is needed.

I posted about Johnson's affairs in relation to his character & the ability to trust in him which is relevant to this thread about his statement on hoping to achieve normality by November.

I made a glib reference to Game of Thrones in relation to 'winter is coming' as did Raab recently with 'taking the knee'.

My point was this thread (and many others) are not simply 'Tory bashing' and political points scoring they are about the Government's response past, present and future to this pandemic. The Government are facing criticism from a lot of perspectives. Gigantopithecus said she voted Conservative and thinks this Government has performed terribly. I didn't vote for either of the main parties at the last GE.Concerns and complaints about the Government are not a Labour party vendetta!

It is pretty pointless us continuing this exchange as you obviously think the Government are doing a good job, I think there have been many failures which I have listed at length and we are obviously not going to convince each other differently. I do hope they do better though.

Mumrath

Clav was exactly the same on any Brexit thread, the tory party could do no wrong, there could never ever be any criticism of brexit because it was a Tory policy and therefore above reproach.

Most of us can see good and bad in our political parties and their policies but some cannot.

Yes Johnsons sexual & family morality is very important, few will ever know him personally, so his actions are what we can base his character on.

I had already assumed that you were a Liberal Democrat from previous threads.

his statement on hoping to achieve normality by November

"It is my strong and sincere hope that we will be able to review the outstanding restrictions and allow a more significant return to normality from November at the earliest - possibly in time for Christmas,"

"At a news conference at Downing Street, the prime minister said the plan "remains conditional" on continued progress in controlling the virus and preventing a second wave of infections that could overwhelm the NHS."

"Mr Johnson added he was "hoping for the best and planning for the worst".

What do you think they have done right?

I could never understand why we were supposed to believe anything John Major said regarding Brexit - on account of his four year affair with Edwina Currie. Remain voters would insist he was telling the truth.

That's the problem when you try to pigeon-hole everyone and everything into party politics. I am what you would call a floating voter and what I would call a pissed off member of the public!

I can tell - shortly after I joined the thread you posted;

"As for Johnson, he won’t even say how many children he has from the multiple affairs he had during his marriage. He’s comfortable with deception, I don’t think we can expect him to be perfectly frank with the public!"

What do you think they have done right?

In no particular order..... Min wage increases, Furlough, funding vaccine programs, dropping Huawei from 5G, reversing austerity on the NHS.

They haven't reversed austerity in the NHS.

Coronavirus: UK's pandemic planning an 'astonishing' failure, say MPs
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53484998

The Commons Public Accounts Committee are very concerned about the Government's slow and unprepared response to the pandemic:
"We are astonished by the government's failure to consider in advance how it might deal with the economic impacts of a pandemic," it said.

The report noted the government undertook at three-day pandemic simulation exercise in 2016 known a Exercise Cygnus.

But the committee said the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy "was not even aware of the exercise", saying: "It is astounding that the government did not think about the potential impact on the economy."

They would like them to perform better going forward:
In its report, the Commons Public Accounts Committee said the government needed to "learn lessons" from its response and "ensure it doesn't repeat its mistakes again in the event of a second spike in infections - or another novel disease outbreak
