To those that don't want to wear a mask...

I've seen a lot of threads on here with people annoyed that they have to wear a mask in public.

Aside from those with a legitimate medical reason, why are some people so anti mask?

Genuinely curious. I have had to travel to and from work throughout lockdown and the introduction of masks on public transport made me feel somewhat safer. Noticing less and less people wearing them, or wearing them as a decorative chin strap.

Can't you just read the other mask threads?

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 16/07/2020 15:52

Because it is controlling of the government to enforce this, I believe I have the right to have my face exposed at all times, because I accept the risk of coronavirus and I refuse to live in fear, and because I believe I am at low risk of the illness as I actively try to be healthy.

TheGreatWave · 16/07/2020 15:52

Many people are "don't really want to, but will where I need to."

I don't have to justify any further than that.

NiknicK · 16/07/2020 15:56

Various reasons really. I posted about this the other day and had almost 1000 replies telling me I’m being selfish and childish. I didn’t actually say I was going to attempt to go into a shop without a mask after the 24th. I just won’t be shopping except for online from now on. My ds is autistic and I have some traits myself like sensory issues ie having things on or around my face. I find it unbearable and can’t stop itching and touching my face which kind of defeats the object of wearing one. Plus the fact I personally believe masks will not reduce the spread of transmission. Now before I get flamed again this is just my personal opinion and just like you I’m entitled to an opinion.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 15:56

I like to see people’s full faces, I find just seeing someone’s eyes unnerving and sterile and not the society I wish my children to grow up in.
I’ll wear one because I have to only where I have to.

NiknicK · 16/07/2020 16:01

Oh and also the control thing. We’ve all had to do as we were told due the greater good and protection of other people, and whilst I was happy to go along with that i do have my limits. I know people have said that we are only being told to wear masks now, as opposed to back in March, as the country would have run out but again, I don’t believe this. Apart from the initial run on and shortage of certain products at the beginning of the pandemic, supplies quickly bounced back, so I believe there would have been enough masks to go around. We weren’t told to wear them at the peak of this pandemic so they can sod off if they think I’m going to wear one now.

Yes, this really

I don’t like them, I am very claustrophobic and they make me panic. I’ll wear one when I need to but will mainly stick to online shopping and avoid public transport

chaoticisatroll55 · 16/07/2020 16:11

Who on earth actually wants to wear one? They must be crazy. I will and have this afternoon but it was awful. My glasses steam up when I'm trying to cross the road or when I talk. They are bloody awful BUT if it stops a second wave so life can resume reasonably normally sometime next year I'm up for wearing it.

weathervane1 · 16/07/2020 16:12

I have a large nose and there is always a small gap up the sides which causes my glasses to steam up. Top Tip - rub the lenses lightly with diluted fairy liquid prior to a shopping trip and avoid bumping into people! Other dish washing detergent liquids are available....

AldiAisleofCrap · 16/07/2020 16:13

@LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus
because I accept the risk of coronavirus and I refuse to live in fear, and because I believe I am at low risk of the illness as I actively try to be healthy.
Your reasons aren’t relevant because you don’t wear a mask to protect yourself, non medical grade masks offer the wearer very little protection. You just don’t want the government to tell you that you must protect other people , people who may well be very high risk of Covid19.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/07/2020 16:14

I am wearing one where required but I don't like it. I am claustrophobic, it makes my face feel sweaty, I find them distracting and I can't always hear what people say when they have them on.

There's nothing really to like about wearing one, you wouldn't wear one if it wasn't necessary would you?

InDubiousBattle · 16/07/2020 16:15

I don't want to wear a mask because despite trying 6 different types my glasses get steamed up so I can't see. It's a pain. I will wear them on public transport and in shops but I will be avoiding both as much as I can when it becomes mandatory.

Kazzyhoward · 16/07/2020 16:16

I believe I have the right to have my face exposed at all times, because I accept the risk of coronavirus and I refuse to live in fear, and because I believe I am at low risk of the illness as I actively try to be healthy.

So you don't care whether you pass it onto others then?

This basically

Clumsyduck · 16/07/2020 16:20

🙄 bold fail

Rainycloudyday · 16/07/2020 16:25

I will wear one because it’s a rule and because I accept it may help to protect other people. But I don’t WANT to because:

  • I hate the feeling, they make me feel very claustrophobic.
  • My small children are very unnerved by people in masks and I understand why. I don’t want them growing up in this environment.
  • Seeing loads of people walking around masked gives me the heebie jeebies, it’s odd, zombie-like and just plain creepy.
  • I am highly suspicious of government motives given that we were told not to wear them at the height of the pandemic but now apparently need to.
  • I resent any part of what I wear on my body being subject to government mandate.
  • I strongly believe this will inflict huge economic damage onto the already crippled high street as people choose to shop online more.

I could list other reasons but those are my key objections. Like I say, I will wear a mask when I have to but I struggle to believe that anyone genuinely is unable to understand why a lot of people aren’t over the moon about this.

Twickerhun · 16/07/2020 16:29

I got annoyed during lockdown by individuals in masks forgetting to socially distanced in supermarkets. Masks may help to stop the spread but they don’t make you immune. People seem to take greater risks With my health when wearing them

Standardy · 16/07/2020 16:34

@NiknicK you wouldn't have to wear one if you find it hard for genuine reasons, don't put yourself through it. People who choose not to for selfish or ridiculous reasons are a different kettle of fish though, just wear one. Although most people seem to fall into the more reasonable, I don't like it and I'll moan but I'll still wear one when needed.

Also this
SockYarn · 16/07/2020 16:36

I hate them, I find them incredibly uncomfortable, sweaty, sticky - not great combination with menopause symptoms. I cannot bear anything over my face, it makes me feel panicky and I just can't stand it.

I also don't think there is any benefit - at this stage of the pandemic when there are so few people circulating with the illness - to make masks compulsory. I've also definitely seen people treating their mask as a Magic Immunity Shield and ignoring the more important rules about keeping their distance.

I wear a face visor instead though. Still quite itchy and sticky over the forehead but it at least I can breathe wearing it. I only wear it in places where I have to by law though, mostly shops. Not outside and not in the car or anywhere else.

ScottishBadger · 16/07/2020 16:38

They've been in as mandatory for a week in Scotland. It's not made shops any quieter. Not really noticing much dissent. Definitely not zombie like, if anything, nicer to be out as people will pass pleasantries now rather than avoiding eye contact and rushing past

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 16:39

You don’t really want to know or understand - you’re just trying to use the cover of wide eyed faux innocence to be a toady twat.

I’m exempt- I don’t need to justify why to you.

flutterbean · 16/07/2020 16:39

I work in retail. I have generally found that those wearing masks think this exempts them from social distancing.
We've now been told that from tomorrow we as staff have to wear a face mask. I'm worried that as we're now wearing them customers will not keep their distance from us.
It also means I will have to have it on for my 10 hour shifts, I wear glasses and have yet to find one (even with a nose bridge) that does not make them fog up.

Apolloanddaphne · 16/07/2020 16:43

I don't want to wear a mask as they make me feel panicked and breathless. However, as it is mandatory to wear a mask in shops here in Scotland I will wear one to do my weekly shop and when I go to the hairdressers next week. Other than that I just won't visit any shops.

Treaclepie19 · 16/07/2020 16:44

@flutterbean I have one from Boden that's been really good for no steaming up. Though I still hate wearing it and panic but since I'm having regular appointments (pregnant) I've got no choice.
