To those that don't want to wear a mask...

I've seen a lot of threads on here with people annoyed that they have to wear a mask in public.

Aside from those with a legitimate medical reason, why are some people so anti mask?

Genuinely curious. I have had to travel to and from work throughout lockdown and the introduction of masks on public transport made me feel somewhat safer. Noticing less and less people wearing them, or wearing them as a decorative chin strap.

Thank you.

Only a properly fitting N95 of ffp3 masks protect the wearer, nobody is going to go to the shops with a properly fitted N95, they are bloody uncomfortable.
A fabric face covering is quite effective, if it fits.

@Popc0rn If that's how you choose to interpret what I've said, that's fine with me.

TheGreatWave · 24/07/2020 10:55

I hope the vast majority of customers wear them as well otherwise I'm unlikely to be able to continue working

The vast majority will wear them and as long as those who aren't don't start coughing, sneezing and singing up the middle aisle then chances are things will be fine.

They may not all be happy about it, but nothing should be done about that.

RollercoasterRaver · 24/07/2020 11:24

I will wear one if I have to but I really don't like it, in fact I hate it. I wore one for a few hours on a hospital visit and it made me feel uncomfortable and I'm not usually even an anxious person. I'm worried my daughter will be affected by it so I'm just going to avoid the shops where I can for the time being which is a shame. I don't necessarily mind if it gets us over the last hurdle but it seemed very odd to announce it and wait ten days and then do it now and not during the peak.

I'm not convinced most will wear them, particularly if no one is doing anything at all to enforce it and there's no penalty to the won't brigade. But we shall see.
Jeremyironsnothing · 24/07/2020 11:34

Very few actually want to. I hope most people will, in order to prevent that second wave. Unless you really, really can't, then it's utterly selfish to not wear one.

@BamboozledandBefuddled

You do sound quite bitter. Forget about the arseholes. Why not be positive moving forward?

@PestymcPestFace

Interesting stats. Haven't seen that before in all day hear discussions on masks. Cotton hybrid masks seem quite successful if fitted properly. Heartening.

sleepingpup · 24/07/2020 12:03

Coronavirus: How effective are homemade face masks?

HeIenaDove · 24/07/2020 14:18

Loving how @BamboozledandBefuddled is being called the bitter one by posters who are doing crap on key workers to @BlackPetunia

sorry not sure what this means @HeIenaDove

I was in a large Tesco around lunchtime today and everyone was wearing one. The only person I saw without was as I left a man tried to go in without one and the woman on the door stopped him and asked if he had one. He said no in a rather confused way, and when she explained it was mandatory from today he said "oh alright then" and walked away. Not see what rock he'd been living under that he didn't realise.
I'm not sure what Tesco's policy is on people who say they're exempt though (I'll admit I did eavesdrop on the conversation with the man as I was interested in how they'd handle someone saying they were exempt but obviously he didn't).

WombatChocolate · 24/07/2020 18:34

Most people would rather not wear a mask. Most people find it uncomfortable and inconvenient.
However, within that, most people will wear one when told to and accept that it's just one of the sacrifices within the BIGGER PICTURE and that everything isn't about us personally at this point.

Of course, some people cannot wear a mask for genuine reasons. They really just can't. Others would strongly prefer not to and will decide that their strong personal preference will override what we have all been told to do.

It's always the way isn't it.....when there is a bigger picture, some people aren't willing to see it or make any personal sacrifice but decide their personal comfort or choice over-rides what has been decided as benefitting the majority or those who need it most.

Most people don't want to wear a mask. Most people find it inconvenient and uncomfortable. Lots of people aren't totally sure it makes any difference. However, most people will still wear one because they have been told to and recognise that this kind of policy needs government support and for everyone who possibly can to follow it, even when they don't like it or want to. They just get on and do it and accept it as a hopefully short-term inconvenience of these times.

Some people are clearly exempt and cannot wear one. FIne. Others choose not to wear one and so won't be going out during this period to shops etc. Fine. The people most of us have issues with are those who aren't in these 2 categories, but just the category of those who really don't like masks or don't think they should be told what to do.....so decide they will just do their own thing regardless.

esveee · 24/07/2020 21:42

Why don't people like wearing masks? What other than all the obvious reasons lol.

Personally I dislike having to choose between breathing and seeing. I try to do just a little of each as no matter what I do or how I wear it my glasses start steaming up if I breathe too much!

I'm not complaining, just means I'll be avoiding shops. Everyone at the supermarket and on the train today was wearing them so compliance is high. There was even a police officer on the platform reminding people of the law change and they duly got their masks out and put them on.

Popc0rn · 24/07/2020 21:54

@HeIenaDove

I also don't really understand that sentence.

@WombatChocolate
You've summed it up perfectly.

Anyway, I went into town to go shopping today, pretty much everyone had a face mask of some description or a face visor, including all the staff in the 7 or so different shops I went in. Will be interesting to see if compliance remains so high in the next few weeks or so.

DontDoItGeorge · 24/07/2020 23:20

Ive been wearing a mask at work now since March for 13 hour shifts.
Just to look on the bright side for a minute, I save a fortune in foundation and lip gloss, I actually now feel naked without one on at work and its given me more confidence to speak up. Sounds silly I know, but i feel i can hide behind my mask and say what i likeGrin

daisymay133 · 24/07/2020 23:40

Today in town hardly anyone had them on In shops and Boone was challenged by staff

Derbygerbil · 24/07/2020 23:47

@daisymay133

Where are you? Complete opposite in my part of the world (Suffolk).

WhiteChocTwix · 25/07/2020 00:01

My poor DF has been told to be within current guidelines he has to wear one in his care home day to day, unless he's eating or in his room! Ffs this is so extreme. Imagine having to wear one in your own living room! Confused

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 00:05

Hey @PestymcPestFace which rock is that.....there’s no requirement to wear them

M and S food hall nearby ....Staff not wearing them either

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 00:08

@DontDoItGeorge yes I think eye makeup will become very popular..

@esveee our local constabulary have said to not report non wearers to them but to tale store staff to enforce it.....er, no! Not happening. How can our shopfloor staff actually do that?

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 00:13

@Derbygerbil maybe you could shop for them then? Shielded need to stay at home as these ‘masks’ are little more than a damp rag offering no protection so your friends are no safer

And today people had them under their chin to speak to people they were with,shop staff and cashiers! So if they are shielding they won’t be protected at all

And so many people have exemptions for unknown conditions it seems.... so me NOT wearing a mask makes zero difference.... I will remain at2 meter distance though

Derbygerbil · 25/07/2020 00:14

@BlackPetunia

Your attitude is going to do wonders with attracting customers. If it’s one thing people don’t like, it’s others perceived unfairness and others exploiting loopholes in rules when they’re adhering to them.

NeverFit · 25/07/2020 00:15

I went to Tesco on Friday evening and there were quite a few people (mainly young men) walking about in and shopping without face masks on.

They weren't challenged or even offered a mask to wear.
