Face coverings to be made compulsory in England

Sky News just reporting that from Friday 24 July it will be mandatory to wear a face mask in shops/stores in England. Fines of £100 if you don’t (reduces to £50 if payable within 2 weeks).

@Standardy

It's just a piece of fabric *@AlecTrevelyan006*, and stop the dramatics. Yes, it's been incredibly crap for millions of people, and it will take a long time to recover, but it's the same the world over. Your ignorant comment about the over 90s is pretty gross, and misinformed. Wearing masks is a way to try and keep transmissions low so that we don't go through this shit again.
The question for me is ‘does wearing a face covering in a shop have a negative or a positive impact on the economy?’

Imho the most likely answer is that it will have a negative impact.

We shall see either way.

Fuckinellitsme · 15/07/2020 11:06

It absolutely is. Particularly for those who can't wear a mask due to things like PTSD and other very personal, sensitive issues.

sleepingpup · 15/07/2020 11:10

*Imho the most likely answer is that it will have a negative impact.

so many other countries are wearing masks and have done for many months. some have done for years .

Imho masks are the least of our worries and we will get used to them.

We will be queuing in the rain because of social distancing, masks or no masks.

ut. The face covering fiasco is just another sign that the government has no idea how to get out of this mess. There is no clear exit strategy

But totally agree with us. They are ridiculous.

Derbygerbil · 15/07/2020 11:31

I agree. I don’t much like masks but can’t imagine they’ll stop me doing stuff that I would do anyway. It’s wierd how the British Exceptionalism spouted by some has now morphed into the British being exceptionally stubborn and unadaptable.

Barbie222 · 15/07/2020 11:40

Hancock is saying that masks aren't needed in offices or schools because you are in close proximity with the same people for long periods of time...... BUT are needed in shops because you have very short interactions with many people...... (where spread is supposed to be so much harder)

This is because you are likely to catch something in an office or school regardless of whether or not you are wearing a mask, so you might as well not bother. Office workers are supposed to be covid secure, and it seems school staff are just supposed to get on with it as they've long been painted into a corner.

Wait and watch while Cummings et al now quickly generate a narrative about how ridiculous offices are, expecting people to wfh when they should be returning trade to the high street, and single handedly being responsible for destroying our economy. It's already beginning!

Derbygerbil · 15/07/2020 12:09

I’m not a fan of Cummings, but why would he actively want to try and destroy the economy?

Barbie222 · 15/07/2020 12:41

No, I meant that the offices who keep people wfh and don't require their employees back in the office will be painted as the bad guys - I didn't make myself clear.

Basically, Hancock's statement today was not reassuring as it basically says you can't help but catch the virus if one of your colleagues has it, mask or no mask, but according to Boris you should be doing your bit and getting back into the office ASAP even if it's perfectly possible for you to wfh.

verybritishproblems · 15/07/2020 12:51

but according to Boris you should be doing your bit and getting back into the office ASAP even if it's perfectly possible for you to wfh.

He is being ridiculous. Funny how the narrative has changed. They want people back in the office now so they are picking up coffees, lunch etc. All the way through this circus they’ve picked and chosen the science needed to back their current agenda. Which is at the moment all about the economy rather than safety.

InOutofmymind · 15/07/2020 13:18

Well i'm glad i wasn't the only one who didn't understand the "message"

If office spread occurs, that means local isolated lockdowns, which will further undermine confidence & hence the economy.

fwiw, i think masks should have been the order of the day during lockdown ie when going to the supermarket.... then as restrictions lifted (as infection rate decreases) mask requirement also lifted, boosting confidence to shop, as it is, mask wearing now will make people stay at home, as they wonder Why?

But much like the travel quarantine, its all arse about face

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/07/2020 13:29

I already know of one company that has told its staff that they now have to wear a face covering in the office.

I know of another that has said staff can take their face covering off while sat at their desk but have to wear it at all other times while on the premises.

Neither of the above are customer facing roles.

Welcome to the new normal.

HeIenaDove · 15/07/2020 15:24

@sleepingpup Well Japan disagrees with you.

Cold face masks sold via vending machines in Japan
18 May 2020

YAMANOBE, Yamagata Pref.: Cold face masks are being sold via vending machines in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Yamagata, at a time when demand for regular face masks remains high in the country amid the new coronavirus outbreak.

The cloth face mask with two pockets to put an ice pack in each of them is priced at 1,300 yen. The product, which comes with four ice packs, are available for purchase at two vending machines in the prefecture or via the internet.

The mask is manufactured by four sewing companies in the prefecture.

I think the cold mask would be useful to prevent not only coronavirus infection but also heatstroke said Katsuyuki Goto, managing director at a knitting company in the town of Yamanobe, Yamagata, that developed the product.

The company started selling usual face masks via vending machines in March after its sales of knit products declined partly due to cancellations of exhibitions amid the pandemic.

In late April, the company started placing advertisement flags saying: "Now offering cold face masks," after finding out that the masks happened to be cooled as they were sold via vending machines for cold drinks.

The flags helped boost mask sales and led the company to come up with the idea of creating the face mask that stays cold longer.

The product was developed through a lot of trial and error, according to the company.

"It would be great if we can make social contributions, even only slightly, by offering various choices of face masks," Goto said.

So what was that you were saying about other countries.

HeIenaDove · 15/07/2020 15:29

DH is fitting a dashcam to his mobility scooter just in case he gets harassed or discriminated against.

HeIenaDove · 15/07/2020 15:31

We are acquiring sheilds but DH suspects (as do i tbh) that some will still think this isnt good enough. Hence the dashcam

loulouljh · 15/07/2020 15:32

How many people will wear them though....have just been out to a garden centre. 5% max of people have them on. Do we think come a week on Friday that will change? Probably not. The already struggling garden centre will have even less customers!

Likefootball · 15/07/2020 15:40

Why have they left it 'till now?
Can't really see that it will make much difference , but I fully intend to comply.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 15/07/2020 17:17

How many people will wear them though.

In this country, not many.
I worry that a lot of those that refuse will also be the sort that won't like being refused access into places. I expect places will either just let people in without a mask or they will up the security at entrances and face offs will happen.

The English are very good at,
"Don't tell me what to do"
even at the cost of their health and the health of their families.

sleepingpup · 15/07/2020 17:32

Do you mean Game Over for Covid ? Because that is a much bigger problem right now than heat stoke.

This is what I said Helena. ^ And I still think it is true.

Cooling masks are a great idea 👍🏻 and it does get very hot and humid Japan.

But I don't think many are going to keel over and die with heatstroke here. I really don't.

annabel85 · 15/07/2020 17:46

*How many people will wear them though.

In this country, not many.*

I think a majority will wear them as long as it's somewhat enforced and taken seriously. I don't mean security guards and police in every shop or anything like that, but just the sense that it's taken seriously.

I think in this country people have to be shamed into doing things, so I think therefore most will wear a mask but not until the day comes that it's mandatory.

Advising people here to do things is useless, if you tell them they have to do it then most usually will. Obviously some won't because they don't give a fuck (aside from the medical reasons of others who can't wear a mask). What is annoying is how everything has to be a big drama in this country but when the day comes most people will eventually suck it up and wear a mask.

After Michael Gove was pictured without a face covering in a Pret A Manger, Boris Johnson’s spokesman says masks will not be required when buying takeaway food.

HeIenaDove · 15/07/2020 17:50

yes its well known that takeaways are a lot bigger than supermarkets so social distancing is so much easier Hmm

now the pissheads wont have to worry about going to get their kebabs from the takeaway after leaving the pub or donning a mask to do it because they arent required in either.

BruceAndNosh · 15/07/2020 18:25

Will masks be mandatory in Barnard Castle ?

Asking for a friend...

betteliefsen · 15/07/2020 18:27

Think they should split the shopping week with Sunday-Tuesday for the wet blankets. Wednesday - Saturday for everybody else

What day do the condescending idiots like you go?

Has Boris got shares in Pret or something?

Wants office workers back in so they can buy more sandwiches and coffee and now this.

Only if you can't read the signs telling you to.
