Sky News just reporting that from Friday 24 July it will be mandatory to wear a face mask in shops/stores in England. Fines of £100 if you don’t (reduces to £50 if payable within 2 weeks).

Sorry Helena it was very naive of me to supply 480 free face coverings to the elderly, disabled and shielding in my town. I'll stop right now.

Fosler · 14/07/2020 01:48

@parker231
No mask, no service
No vaccine, no service.
I won't be wearing a mask to shop. It's unhealthy. I don't, for what's it's worth, go into shops coughing, sneezing and breathing germs on other people. I never did anyway.

betteliefsen · 14/07/2020 01:53

@Pixxie7

I will obviously wear one, I just wish the government would be consistent. I take it that schools are still exempt which makes no sense to me.
Schools aren't only exempt but it's categorically not allowedHmm
WantToLiveByTheSea · 14/07/2020 01:56

@Fosler

You say you dont breath germs on people..

How do you know?

Considering a huge percentage of people with covid -19 have no symptoms

HeIenaDove · 14/07/2020 01:59

@PestymcPestFace On MN thats called a drip feed.

Good of you to do that but it wont stop the discrimination towards those who simply cant wear one.

Discobar · 14/07/2020 02:01

@okiedokieme

Just booked a delivery slot, can't stand the feel on my face, I will not be going shopping. The shops aren't busy, easy to stay 5m away from others here and I'm not going to non essential type shops anyway, don't need anything. I did wear one on the train and it hurt my ears, really painful after about an hour (and it was a 4 hour journey)
Good job theirs no air raids going on.
HeIenaDove · 14/07/2020 02:01

Its naive of you to think disabled and vulnerable people wont get challenged.

You making face masks (great that it is ) wont stop people who CANT wear one being challenged Confused

HeIenaDove · 14/07/2020 02:03

I daresay ppl who were running from a night air raid in Whitechapel were told Good job Jack the Rippers not about.

Harking back to the past has been done in every era Its nothing new.

NeverFit · 14/07/2020 02:04

I've been wearing a mask when I go to the shops. At one point the shop assistants in the local shops were wearing them too. But now they don't and worryingly they are getting even more slack on social distancing too. Today one walked right in front of me and shouted that they were opening up another till. I just imagined all the droplets coming out of their mouth 😕

So I'm pleased that face masks will be compulsory for staff and customers.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/07/2020 02:05

And yes it says those of us who have medical exemptions will remain exempt, but no idea how we’re meant to prove it. Now I have to be fearful of being turned away from doing my food shop.

Sad to say, your ‘reward’ for suffering from a medical condition(s) will be suspicion, aggression and abuse. Everybody will be paranoid. I have a persistent cough that I’ve had for years (quite probably connected to a more serious condition) and I’ve been fearful even with that of living my life normally and coughing because of the conclusions it could make people jump to.

I'll happily wear one, yet as a deaf person I'll wear a huge humiliating sign around my neck saying I cant understand a word you say so please dont talk to me. Popping into my local shop for a few things we run out of is the only time I actually get to speak to another human being outside of my household.

I’m fortunate enough not to have any hearing problems and I still struggle to understand shop assistants who are wearing masks. Apart from isolating people who are deaf and hard of hearing, this will very likely lead to their being challenged and even threatened by the hard of thinking when they don’t respond or have to walk away none the wiser even after asking somebody to repeat what they said 10 times to no avail. To a deaf person who relies on lip-reading to communicate safely, this is pure wanton government-backed discrimination. We don’t allow pet dogs in shops, but we do allow guide dogs, because we realise that any hygiene risks they may pose are of a lesser importance than the safety and dignity of blind people. With deaf people, though, there are no concessions that can be made, because it would be everybody else who would need to not wear masks to enable them to be treated equitably.

It’s already been stated many times, but for however many lives are saved connected to COVID, the much greater lasting cost will be to people’s mental health, anxiety, loneliness, social isolation, depression etc - and there will be/have been suicides as a direct result.

On a ‘lighter’ note, though, some people in the community will benefit: this ruling gives thieves the clear message that all you need is a good full-face covering, a hoodie and the ability to run fast and you can pretty much have whatever you want, free of charge, and nobody will be able to identify you. In normal circumstances, you can be asked to remove your motorbike helmet or balaclava, but any shop workers doing this now will themselves risk prosecution for breaking the law and not you.

Discobar · 14/07/2020 02:17

Bottom line.

People wearing masks will be able to shop- No problems.

People refusing- Won't get let in.

People that are exempt - Expect resentment and hostility. Probably won't get let in.

Pubs. Fine for all

Is that fair? No. But that's the way it will be.

Perhaps look at online shopping/delivery slots to avoid confrontation.

All the objections won't mean crap and it's something we just have to get on with.

WantToLiveByTheSea · 14/07/2020 02:20

@okiedokieme

So people who are still shielding will possibly struggle because you and people like you cant wear a mask for half an hour.

Look at tips online, use a paperclip to keep the string away from your ears, Theres other lots of ideas too

WantToLiveByTheSea · 14/07/2020 02:20

Struggle to get an online shop.
Which they will still need

Ticklemelmo · 14/07/2020 02:30

Im glad to read there's people who feel the same as me that they're not happy about wearing them. Im actually gutted, I find it incredibly difficult to wear, really struggle to breath and get out of breath walking, it fogs up my glasses now nothing else and I've tried everything recommend to stop it so it's dangerous for me to walk. I had my baby in the early shut down and going out is my time to refresh, I won't be going out anymore unless I absolutely need to, will be getting online deliveries again now. I feel trapped again.

HeIenaDove · 14/07/2020 02:31

Already happening @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Someone in a face mask nicked a phone in Chelmsford.

@MatildaBaggins

I physically cannot breath while wearing one of these, and in my opinion these things carry the Coronavirus! Putting one on will just give you this made up disease created by big pharma to sell fake vaccines.
What is your preferred brand of glue for sniffing?
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/07/2020 02:49

HeIenaDove

Sad but not surprising.

EmMac7 · 14/07/2020 02:49
@EmMac7 like these ffs Hmm en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_badge
Oh come on. That’s predictable and disingenuous. Are you really comparing our current society/government to Nazi Germany?

HeIenaDove · 14/07/2020 02:56

Do you really want me to post the figures for how many people died after being refused disability benefits.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/07/2020 03:05

I don't go as far as MatildaBaggins, but I do wonder at what point we're going to come to the conclusion that changing and severely restricting everybody's quality of life and mental wellbeing - not to mention destroying the economy and millions of families' own financial stability for many years to come - to just put on hold indefinitely a virus that isn't at all serious for well over 99% of the population is neither sustainable nor a rational response.

It's very sad for those affected and their families, but the hysteria surrounding the fact that a lot of people in care homes are dying beggars belief. Considering that care homes are generally the domain of people who are not only usually very elderly but also already in very poor health, how is this surprising or especially different from non-COVID times?

Apply unsuccessfully for any school place for your child and you'll be told to wait until next year's intake and then try again; seek a place for your loved one in a currently-full care home and they'll offer to call you 'as soon as a place next becomes available', quite probably a matter of weeks or even days. Why do we think that might be?

morethanmeetstheeye · 14/07/2020 03:19

I'm glad they're doing this but fuming that as a primary teacher I'm not 'allowed' to wear one in an enclosed space with children from many households. Everyone bangs on about how children don't get this but adults do and teachers are adults. Children can pass this on and we're not allowed masks. It's a fucking disgrace.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/07/2020 03:22

I also despise the way that the government and some big businesses are grandstanding and falling over themselves to show how much they care for and want to help the poor and vulnerable in society during the pandemic (some of which has actually happened; other simply empty rhetoric), but didn't care before the virus and almost certainly won't care afterwards.

How much do you really care by pumping funds and donations into things like food banks during a time of crisis - and mainly helping those who normally manage well but have suddenly found themselves in dire straits (not at all a bad thing to do, obviously) - but thereby ignoring the very reason for the existence of such facilities and not actually helping long-term those who need it now, needed it before and will still need it afterwards - when things are nice and back to normal for the more privileged - often through circumstances entirely beyond their own control?
