If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

It wouldn't put me off any more than the queuing etc tbh. I haven't been shopping (except supermarket) since the beginning of lockdown. I don't own a mask yet, but have just ordered one.

ginsparkles · 13/07/2020 17:48

No, the high street needs our support.

pigoons · 13/07/2020 17:49

Yes. I'm in Scotland and wore one for the first time at the weekend for my supermarket shop. It was an awful / miserable experience. Glasses fogging up so I couldn't see (despite the nose wire), mask constantly feeling like it was slipping down, resulting in me fiddling with glasses and mask, loads of people no longer SD, lots of people shouting to make themselves heard, shops letting loads of people in. I won't be going back and have secured online deliveries.

PinkFondantFancy · 13/07/2020 17:49

It depends. I could probably see my way through to wearing a mask if it meant all the social distancing, queuing, one way systems, hazard tape was removed. I'm not doing a mask on top of all other other measures given that it apparently wasn't necessary when the virus was at its peak.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 13/07/2020 17:49

Yes - it's just another thing that will make shopping less pleasant and means we'd just shop on-line even more.

I'm not sure how I'd cope with any long shopping trips and masks with my asthma - though I think shortish bus and train journeys masks are a good idea.

crosseyedMary · 13/07/2020 17:49

yes, I dislike shops anyway but I would try to use an order online collect in store service where possible so as to reduce strain on the roads etc

SisterAgatha · 13/07/2020 17:50

Not at all. I would welcome it with open arms!

crosseyedMary · 13/07/2020 17:52

true bu then why support something which is dying anyway, should we not direct out efforts to finding more efficient and safe ways of operating?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 13/07/2020 17:54

No. I wear one now in shops. However, the whole pandemic has made me realise I have too much stuff so I'm unlikely to shop as much in future anyway.

crosseyedMary · 13/07/2020 17:54

we have shops and offices empty and unused, and a housing crisis, not enough homes for families who need them, dont we need to put all these empty premises to better use?

TheLegendOfZelda · 13/07/2020 18:05

@HappyHammy

I would rather wear a soft mask out shopping than a hard plastic ventilator mask in ITU 24/7. Complete no brainer in my family.
That isn't the choice

I'd rather dance naked down the high street than wear a ventilator, but hey, there we go, it's not like that's the choice either

So weird, these little memes that do the rounds

DamitJanet · 13/07/2020 18:06

I’d be more likely to shop if/when they’re compulsory.

phoenixrosehere · 13/07/2020 18:07

Yes.

Most of the people I see aren’t wearing them properly, constantly touching them and think because they’re wearing a mask they don’t have to social distance nor use hand sanitiser. Plus, the rubbish left behind by the disposable ones is ridiculous. I also struggle with wearing them and have yet to find one that I can wear properly without feeling nauseous, hence wearing a visor instead.

Saying that, I’ve only been going to the high street maybe once a week during quiet times for something to do or for the farmer’s market. I won’t need the visor for the market.

HandsOffMyRights · 13/07/2020 18:07

Yes. Poor eyesight and hearing makes it a misery.

lljkk · 13/07/2020 18:08

Probably yes I'll be put off -- because the whole reason is to remind us all to treat each other like toxic waste & to minimise interactions. I'm not a recreational shopper, anyway, so I know I don't matter. Still, it's an extra reason to think harder about "Do I really need to go to the shop?"

I have read in several places the argument that masks are a great thing if they cut down on people going out, and that therefore creates more social distancing. Some people want face covers to be mandatory precisely to achieve that.

I had a little tirade today about the govt's transparent strategy in their messaging today. They will talk a 'guilt' line but then handwring that into the narrative "The problem is that some people just won't do the right thing unless they are told to". Both Gove & BoJo are spinning the start of this narrative out today. It's how they want to get support for mandatory face cover wearing.

Wishforsnow · 13/07/2020 18:10

I would be more likely to shop if they were compulsory

NameChange84 · 13/07/2020 18:10

It would make me more likely to go back to shopping in person. Especially when coupled with distancing measures. I actively avoid places were the vast majority of people are not bothering to cover their noses/mouths and social distance.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 13/07/2020 18:14

I’m fine with masks, it’s the queuing that puts me off. Why don’t you tell us what you think, OP?

MargotB7 · 13/07/2020 18:17

I have no desire to go shopping with or without a mask but I was never that bothered anyway.

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 13/07/2020 18:20

Yes

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 18:25

"Because of course it would be far better to breathe all that stuff out onto someone else"

So if this is very harmful to others why wernt masks a thing before this year.

girlicorne · 13/07/2020 18:28

I don’t like shopping for leisure anyway, I think there are much more fun ways to spend my free time so I tend to shop online anyway. I have a very comfortable mask which I don’t mind wearing so I don’t think I ll be any more or less likely to go.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 13/07/2020 18:28

why didn't you enable voting OP? it seems a bit pointless to read a stream of yes/no

I vote Yes FWIW

FourTeaFallOut · 13/07/2020 18:30

Can you enable voting outside of aibu?

Hardbackwriter · 13/07/2020 18:31

Yes. Which isn't to say that I don't think it should be done if the evidence justifies it, but I wouldn't do anything for leisure if I had to wear a mask to do it because it wouldn't be enjoyable, so I wouldn't go to any shop but the supermarket if I had to wear a mask to do it.
