If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

I am going to avoid shopping from now on, it has become a joyless and regimented pursuit. If this is meant to encourage people back to the High St I can see it backfiring.

I feel safer goi out where people where masks (in shops etc). They are not needed outside. They don’t need to be surgical masks a scarf is fine it stops the aerosols. If this means the vulnerable can more safely get to a supermarket then that is better for the whole than someone who won’t wear a mask having a ‘right’ to go to the garden centre. I don’t care if this is unpopular. The shielded have been stuck in for 12 weeks so whilst masks might make it more difficult for some people it’s nothing like what those people have been through.

@Fiddlersgreen wash your lenses with washing-up liquid and dry with a clean cloth. That'll stop them fogging up when you wear a mask.

@LovingLen

Bezos will be rubbing his hands together with all those Prime subscriptions, we have deliveries from Amazon at least 3 times a week
at least Amazon pay loads of tax and treat their employees well... Oh no, hang on wait... er....

@m00rfarm

I’d be interested to know what it was like in Portugal when the rule came in... Did you have hand-wringing too?.... Or are a lot of Brits just drama queens... Are people shopping any more or less now?

Fossie · 13/07/2020 22:58

Yes

Fedup21 · 13/07/2020 22:58

Good, I think Boris has made the right call here, for once. I haven’t been in a shop other than for food for months, but would feel happier about going now.

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/07/2020 22:59

@Derbygerbil

Did you maybe mean "Did some people find it difficult wearing masks initially? Did you find they were able to adjust and feel more comfortable over time?"

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/07/2020 23:00

I’m in Scotland and masks are already mandatory. I’ve been wearing one for weeks in the supermarket, post office etc, but I have no desire to go shopping “for fun” now. It’s not just the mask, it’s the queues, the sanitising, not being able to touch stuff, and so on. I had to go to Boots today and felt a bit sad seeing no testers on the cosmetic counters, although obviously I completely understand why. Browsing makeup was one of my prime lunchtime activities!

Today was the first day of all shops being open here, and I saw huge queues on the news, plus everyone in masks when I popped into Boots, so I may be in a minority.

LovingLen · 13/07/2020 23:00

UK consumers shop online much more than in Europe, so probably not comparable for mask wearing, I’m not sure that all the supermarkets deliver shopping so much as they do here.

Derbygerbil · 13/07/2020 23:00

I don’t care if this is unpopular

Polls I’ve seen indicate it is more popular than not... Not that you’d know that from going shopping.... But then i haven’t tended to wear a mask in a shop but in balance am in favour

m00rfarm · 13/07/2020 23:00

@Derbygerbil

It was no big deal - both locals and ex pats just put on the masks and got on with it! I have not been shopping apart from the supermarket and some pottery stores (I have a nasty pottery habit that developed during lockdown!) oh - and Ikea and a few home stores. But not clothing shops etc. But that is my choice.

Everyone wears the masks with the occasional run outside to get some fresh air and then back into the shop again. Yes - it is definitely not comfortable, but we wear it because we knew if the surgeons wear the damn masks for hours at a time performing complicated operations, we were surely able to do the same to pick up a loaf of bread and two bottles of wine ...

I started off with a washable mask which was quite thick, and have now moved to the disposable surgical masks which are easier to wear in terms of breathability. My glasses get a bit steamed up sometimes as it is quite hot here at the moment.

So in response, people are shopping less, but that is mainly because in the Algarve we apparently have 200% unemployment because of the non airbridge from the UK.

alwaysstressed · 13/07/2020 23:01

Yes cause it rakes the make up off my nose and I end up with a red hooter

stoptheride · 13/07/2020 23:03

Short answer is yes! I don't like my mouth covered and I won't be going into shops..! The real question is will teachers wear them cone September

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 13/07/2020 23:03

I honestly don’t understand though why you have to wear a mask to be in a shop for ten minutes but you can go to a pub, sit in a crowded poorly ventilated space for hours with random strangers or why we are being positively encouraged to eat out, with state sponsored discounts, sitting in a room for several hours.
It’s the logic that gets me .
And why in 11 days time ? Seriously ? If it’s important then why not from now ?

purpleme12 · 13/07/2020 23:05

Yes it will put me off
I have gone to clothes shops since they've opened as I don't buy clothes online they don't fit then I have to post them back
But I really really don't want to now

BananaPop2020 · 13/07/2020 23:05

@Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple I know, it’s just such contradictory nonsense isn’t it? I am convinced this decision is everything to do with economics and nothing to do with health.

purpleme12 · 13/07/2020 23:06

And yes you can go in a pub without a mask where let's face it of course people get way closer than in a shop! It's fucked me off that

ErrolTheDragon · 13/07/2020 23:08

I've not been shopping since before lockdown - I'd be more inclined to consider it if everyone was wearing (proper) masks.

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 23:08

I made a decision while i was in the bath. DH and i rent from a housing association and should anyone from said HA want to enter our flat and that includes the HO........they will have to wear a mask.
Mentioned it to DH He is in complete agreement.

Tanfastic · 13/07/2020 23:11

Yes, I'll continue to shop online, only going to shops if I really have no choice.

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 23:12

@purpleme12 People wanting to get pissed put first shocker. Guess the blokes who were scrapping outside our local Wetherspoons on Friday will have another reason to drink.

Oh and if police start policing this mask thing while doing nothing about what ive mentioned here they will lose support.

Wolfsony · 13/07/2020 23:12

In Massachusetts all the kids on the playpark equipment over the age of 2 must wear them if other kids are present. They seem to be coping just fine so I imagine we can manage to pop one on while we go in for some milk. Honestly, the hysteria over something simple and effective is astounding.

tinylittlepiggy · 13/07/2020 23:13

More likely to shop and spend.

AlexaShutUp · 13/07/2020 23:13

No, I'd be more inclined to go into a shop if I felt confident that everyone would be wearing a mask. I am avoiding them at present as there are too many people failing to take proper precautions.
