If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

Yes i wouldn't go unless necessary.

openplankitchen · 13/07/2020 22:37

@Grandmi such a massive shame for shops and their employees.

Sadly many including us will no longer be shopping until this is reversed :(

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 13/07/2020 22:37

Yes because I am disabled and can't wear them. As they will be compulsory from 24th July then I will be sending DP to the shops from now on.

dementedpixie · 13/07/2020 22:37

Mandatory in England from 24th

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2020 22:37

BakedBlossoms well I’m pregnant and hate wearing one, v difficult to catch my breath sometimes. Sorry that’s hard for you to comprehend

mum2jakie · 13/07/2020 22:38

Yes for a number of reasons and now it's going to be mandatory from 24th July!! I'll save a bit of money I suppose...Confused

Sorry, did you miss the bit where I said "unless they have a medical condition"?

marypoppinsreturns · 13/07/2020 22:40

Just read not compulsory for kids under 11 in England, up here in Scotland it's under 5. I think 5 is too young, I've tried to explain to my 5 year old but he's just going to get distressed as doesn't fully understand. So no shopping with him for a while, until we visit England next month and he won't have to wear one! I think not compulsory under 11 is a more sensible approach for kids.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2020 22:41

Yes I read “medical condition” but not everyone considers pregnancy a condition, look how many people don’t give up seats for pregnant women etc.

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/07/2020 22:43

@BakedBlossoms

I don't have a medical condition, I just don't like wearing a mask. I'm not going to spend hours wandering round shops having a browse whilst uncomfortable realistically.

I accept others won't be bothered by it and would be happy to do so.

I will limit visits only to those that absolutely cannot be avoided. I don't really understand why that's problematic for people.

m00rfarm · 13/07/2020 22:44

We have been wearing masks in shops since April (Portugal) and it is quite normal now. I did an eyebrow wiggle today at a lady who had dropped it below her nose, and she knew immediately and yanked it back up. We are currently at 30 degrees during the day, so it can be a bit hot in a mask, but we manage, and I am sure England is going to be able to do the same.

If you were told that some people were NOT allowed to wear masks, then there would be uproar about that as well.

Uhoh2020 · 13/07/2020 22:45

Sadly I think it will have a detrimental effect on the high street retail shops which are already vulnerable.........not saying the use of masks are wrong btw just pointing out it's another reason people will choose not to shop in person

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2020 22:45

I also enjoy a browse with my LO round the shops, I’m not doing that going forward. I personally don’t like the idea of my 3yr old daughter being around a sea of masked, expressionless faces.

Derbygerbil · 13/07/2020 22:46

I'd say roughly 50:50. So what will BJ do!! He cannot risk putting people off shopping...

Understandably many people feel uncomfortable with the thought of wearing masks, so feel less inclined to go shopping.... Once people get used to it - and they have pretty much everywhere else- they’ll be more comfortable with shopping again...

Besides, I don’t think this is principally about shopping as the risk is pretty small.., It’s more about making masks usage the norm so people are less likely to engage in higher risk activity (eg hairdressers with no masks etc.) and to remind people we’re still in a pandemic.... it’s interesting that some comments I’ve read say they don’t want to shop with face coverings because it reminds them of Covid.... Although the Government would wish it would go away, as it won’t, they can’t let people to forget about it.... unless we want to turn into the next Florida.

TiredMummyXYZ · 13/07/2020 22:47

No I’d feel safer going if people were social distancing and wearing masks.

LovingLen · 13/07/2020 22:47

There will be tons of litter from the disposable ones as they are more comfortable than cloth ones if it’s hot so more people will wear them than the hot cloth ones

AlecTrevelyan006 · 13/07/2020 22:48

looks like i'm going have open an Ocado account for food and then spend all my with Jeff Bezos in America rather than the local high street shop. Ah well...

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/07/2020 22:48

I'm not sure I'm going to stop hating wearing a mask realistically. I've got no problem with the idea of them, I just hate wearing one! I just won't shop in shops, it's not that hard to avoid it.

ChessIsASport · 13/07/2020 22:48

No. I’m more likely to go now.

Fiddlersgreen · 13/07/2020 22:49

I wish I could get any with just “not going to the shops” to avoid wearing a mask however I work in a shop and I assume these new rules will mean I have to wear a mask all day every day from the 24th.

I use public transport for work so I’ve had to wear a mask for the journeys. I haven’t found one yet that I can wear without my glasses steaming up when I breathe, and yes I have bent the top of the mask over my nose and tried wearing my glasses lower on my nose (then I can’t actually see through them!) but nothing works. Not sure how I’m going to do my job with steamed up glasses!

I’ve also found them very hot and sweaty and my acne is awful around my mouth at the moment which I’m sure has been caused by the mask. I know people will think that’s superficial but mine get huge and quite painful.

I feel exactly the same! I wont be entering a shop unless I absolutely have too.

I will not be browsing or window shopping for the foreseeable. It makes me feel uncomfortable, I'll be online browsing instead.

londonscalling · 13/07/2020 22:50

It would encourage me to go

LovingLen · 13/07/2020 22:51

Bezos will be rubbing his hands together with all those Prime subscriptions, we have deliveries from Amazon at least 3 times a week

Shakirasma · 13/07/2020 22:52

I will be much more likely to go into shops now, I've been wearing a mask in the supermarket all along and I will feel much safer if everyone else has to as well.

Chloemol · 13/07/2020 22:52

No, and they are mandatory now from 24th July in shops as well as public transport transport in England
