If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

Yes, can't bear them - can't communicate through them.

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/07/2020 19:32

I will go to the shops once, in order to have my DC’s feet measured for new school shoes. Other than that, I will stay out of shops until they are no longer mandatory.
And will probably enjoy having the money in my pocket rather than someone else’s Smile

UmbrellaHat · 13/07/2020 19:33

Yes. Amazon profits will skyrocket. Never realised till now that you can buy anything online and it arrives the next day. Still currently do food shopping in store but won't if we are forced to wear masks because of ridiculous superstitious people who think it is a sacred talisman to save the human race from extinction manage to force the Gvt to mandate it.

Watsername · 13/07/2020 19:34

No. I can't understand why they're not mandatory already! I will be far more likely to go into a shop if everyone is wearing a mask.

UmbrellaHat · 13/07/2020 19:35

No - it's the way I'm shopping already! The kids have their own masks as well and have loudly passed comment on how the infection risk goes down if you wear them, while staring fixedly at people who aren't
What deeply unpleasant children.

pigoons · 13/07/2020 19:35

@banananman yes I agree and none of the so-called tricks to stop glasses steaming up actually work. it is a bloody shame for my DS who is 6 and wears glasses - he can't sodding see and it makes him cross. It makes me so angry that my son can go to school with hundreds of other kids (no mask required), play with other children (no mask required) but cannot set foot inside a shop without one.

I would like to know all if everyone advocating masks wears glasses themselves all the time to be able to see (opposed to just needing reading glasses) and if so, if they have tried masks with glasses wearing children

pigoons · 13/07/2020 19:38

@Drivingdownthe101
You don't even need to go to the shops to buy school shoes anymore. You can buy a measure from Startrite or use a print off paper measure. It worked perfectly for us.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try! Even better Grin

mosscarpet · 13/07/2020 19:42

pigoons I'm not advocating mask wearing, but I wear one at work (NHS) and wear glasses all the time. The best way is to pull the top of the mask high over his nose so it sits just below his eyes (will feel a bit odd at first) and then pinch the nose wire tight and then place the glasses OVER the top of the mask. Agree it is rubbish being a galsses wearer in a mask though.

Worldgonecrazy · 13/07/2020 19:46

Yes.

I’ve been doing my best to support the economy locally, and encouraging others, but if masks become mandatory at a time when 99.9% of the population don’t have Covid, I will definitely stop going out do much.

Bellesavage · 13/07/2020 19:47

I have been going to the shops regularly but I won't now. I'll go back to online. This also means I won't go to restaurants because we used to go shopping and out for a meal as a family but I wont subject my DC to witnessing scenes reminiscent of a crap doctor who episode.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/07/2020 19:49

It would make me feel more confident Tbh

TempsPerdu · 13/07/2020 19:56

In all honesty, yes it would. Certainly for shopping as any kind of leisure activity. I’d still wear one to dash into food shops and pick up essential items but wouldn’t be making any kind of extended shopping trip for clothes or non-essential items. They’re hot and uncomfortable and make even basic shopping an unpleasant, claustrophobic experience; I can’t imagine wanting to browse or linger in a shop while wearing one (and that’s kind of the point - a constant reminder to be on your guard, not to relax, not to engage in unnecessary social activity).

I haven’t been on a proper ‘shopping trip’ in about six months but plan to this week, before the inevitable mandatory mask announcement is made. After that I can’t see myself going again for the foreseeable future.

WicketWoo · 13/07/2020 19:58

Yes. Definitely.

WicketWoo · 13/07/2020 19:59

Yes. Definitely.

esveee · 13/07/2020 20:01

I'll still shop for groceries and any desperately needed essentials, but no I won't be wandering around browsing in a mask.

MaudesMum · 13/07/2020 20:02

The sort of shopping I like to do is to walk into town (about 10 minutes each way) mooch down my local high street, going into the veg shop, the butcher, the whole food shop, and then maybe the hardware store and the bookshop. All of those shops are currently allowing a very few people in at a time, because they're small shops, and all usually have staff behind perspex shields at the till, so seem safe for all concerned. If face coverings are compulsory, then I'll either have to walk into town and around all those shops with my face covering on, which will be a bit of a pain, or pull it up and down 5 or 6 times during my morning, which will also be a pain (and not very hygienic). So, I'll feel much more inclined to give up on the high street, and get the whole thing over in one supermarket trip instead. So, put me down as a Yes.

HeIenaDove · 13/07/2020 20:08

Wow @MaudesMum That actually sounds like a proper High Street...................................for now.

byvirtue · 13/07/2020 20:12

Yes I’m trying to do my bit to support the economy going to shops, restaurants and pubs with a toddler in tow, it’s already a faff and a bit of a mixed bag experience wise. Wearing a mask is the final nail in the coffin I just couldn’t be bothered to go to the high street anymore.

Tried to go into jojo maman Bebe at the weekend and they had a sign on the door asking you not to touch anything. I didn’t bother going in, I can not touch things from the comfort of my own home!

StopGo · 13/07/2020 20:36

No, a significant percentage of people are wearing masks incorrectly so actually making things worse. The chin sling, uncovered nose, constant mask fiddling, reusing the same mask for days make it all pointless.

Greyhair59 · 13/07/2020 20:50

Yes, would only shop for food or essentials, bad enough now.

Dancingalong · 13/07/2020 20:53

Yes

Notfeelinggreattoday · 13/07/2020 20:54

Yes

Derbygerbil · 13/07/2020 21:00

No, but I don’t shop for pleasure anyway. I think a lot it is that masks are out of people’s comfort zone. That will change as it has in other countries.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 13/07/2020 21:01

@pamdora nothing like the comparison to seatbelts at all
And if we dont like wearing a mask so choose to not go into shops thats out choice
I can get most of what i need online and if masks become compulsory on shops , i will shop online for the foreseeable future . Personally i preferred the 2 m rule in shops as i domt want people that close to me even with a mask on seeing as so many wear them incorrectly etc
