How long do people suspect they will be needed / kept mandatory?

OP posts:
sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 11:10

i'm off to the shops now wearing a mask. it's really not a big deal for me. just a bit of glasses fogging.

i'll be social distancing but also and spending money.

If I'm around any of you I can rest easy that I'm spraying less particles on you than if I wasn't wearing a mask.

If any of you who 'hate' wearing a mask are out there or are offended by wearing masks and not wearing one Please take extra care of others and me.

I wouldn't dream of telling any of you to wear one.

But can NOT understand why you wouldn't ( health issues permitting)

I haven’t seen any posters gleefully rubbing their hands together at the thought of a second wave Confused

People saying “please wear a mask, a second wave would be bad,” don’t actually mean “don’t wear a mask so I can laugh when people start dying!” It’s literally the opposite.

Possibly try looking at what people are actually saying rather than extrapolating nonsense that isn’t there.

And I think the fact you haven’t been able to show me any examples of anyone excited about a second wave is quite telling.

Fieldofgreycorn · 11/07/2020 11:11

How the hell do you manage a mask if you're snotty?

I don’t know but how often do you se a snotty Chinese or Japanese person?

Huh?

I'm not going to trawl through threads and point them out. But there are many people almost excited about a second wave. There was a thread basically saying I told ya so!! Really happy that they'd predicted how bad things would be and that we should check in with them in September because they'd predicted xy and z for then.

There are people enjoying this. You can deny it all you want but it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

really? or just disagree with you?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 11/07/2020 11:13

Those people advocating the wearing of masks I have a question. If mask wearing becomes/ is mandatory what is the first thing that goes through your mind if you see someone not wearing one? If the answer is "selfish idiot/snowflake/whatever", then you need to take a long hard look at yourself and what you've become.

Is hayfever not a thing in Japan because that's my biggest issue, not colds and such like.

You can respectfully disagree with me and that's fine, but yes some of your posts are nasty.

I think you spend tooo much time on SM.

FizzFan · 11/07/2020 11:13

As someone else made the point (haven’t scrolled back so don’t know if on this thread or another) mask wearing is like vaccination. If enough people do it it might help. You don’t need 100% compliance all the time, just for people who aren’t exempt to wear them. The aim is to reduce transmission, not necessarily to stop every single case. There’s no need to be cuntish to people not wearing one. Just assume they must be exempt and move on. Why always think the worst of people?

Because?
MinnieMousse · 11/07/2020 11:18

Almost all other developed countries have already instituted this, with good compliance and limited whinging. The science is increasingly clear.

This. The English exceptionalism on this subject is baffling. Why are we so special? Genuine exemptions, fine, but the rest of us can surely put up with a very minor amount of discomfort in order to provide a wider benefit to all.

MinnieMousse · 11/07/2020 11:21

They're even mandatory in parts of the US, which is notorious about "infringements of liberty".

KaronAVyrus · 11/07/2020 11:21

It really depends how long we are supposed to do it for. Couple of weeks - fine. Several decades - sod off.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 11:22

@TrustTheGeneGenie

because you talk in generalisations. Quoting other threads. As if that. is RL.

No idea if "there are many people " excited about a 2nd wave. And I don't care.

But you've obviously read it somewhere so
"i can't deny it"

YOU are the one that said about pensioners dying. But I'm nasty.

🙄

It is very much a thing and masks really help stop the pollen particles going up your nose and in your throat, so there’s much less sneezing overall.

Dh still wears masks over here when the pollen index is high and it makes a massive difference for him. Thankfully, otherwise the sneezing and groaning are off the chart Grin

Miljea · 11/07/2020 11:23

I wear a FFP2 masks when I'm in the shops. I started with a FFP3 but it was quite hard to breathe comfortably, and move quickly around the shop pushing a heavy trolley! You have to pace yourself a bit! The FFP2 mask is way easier to wear.

Both have the advantage of protecting you from me and me from you.

As for fogging up your glasses, it doesn't mean the FFP mask doesn't fit properly- the heat from your filtered breath does that.

But personally, I am surprised at how few people wear masks in supermarkets here in Hampshire. I suspect that it isn't because everyone has made a careful, balanced risk assessment, rather that they 'feel silly' wearing one....

It's not my RL, thankfully I don't really know anyone quite as awful in RL.

Yeah, but it's not me that's relishing every death, is it?

I would presume they had a medical condition that would mean they couldn’t wear one.

But at the moment, with lots of people just choosing not to wear one, I think that most people not wearing one are stupid/selfish because those people who can’t wear one are being given a bad name by those who think it impinges on their “freedoms”

HandsOffMyRights · 11/07/2020 11:24

I had to wear a face mask last week for two hours in the salon. It forced me to remove my varifocal glasses and I cannot see well without them.
Had I been walking without glasses this would have been very dangerous. It was a very depressing 2 hours, reminding me that I'm wholly dependent on glasses. I won't be returning and if it's mandatory in shops then I guess I'll be forced to stay home. God knows what I'll do at work.

I don't think people who haven't got poor eyesight for both long and near sighted understand how masks impact glasses.
I'd either have to remove them (and can't see well at all without them) put them on my nose (still steaming and impacting field of vision) and fiddle with mask frequently. Tissues in the mask don't work, nor do the quick fixes like washing glasses in soapy water. None of this prevents hot air steaming glasses.

Why is this not being talked about? Sight loss is a very real and common condition. I'm not just talking about not being able to read a label, I'm talking about manouvering, seeing faces, looking out for obstacles. I am lost without my visual aids. Why are opticians not offering advice other than trying to persuade us to wear contacts as they could make more £$£. I'm not a suitable candidate for contacts as I have extremely dry eyes.

Oh interesting! That's good. I imagined they'd exacerbate the issue actually!

sorry who is?

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Sparticuscaticus · 11/07/2020 11:26

I have breathing problems, masks affect that, I'm partially deaf so struggle to hear people as it muffles speech and removes lip reading cues. It's exhausting to try to breathe through a mask with respiratory problems already, to talk or try to hear others through a mask. HOWEVER I STILL WEAR A MASK WHEN I AM OUT (Mostly hospital trips for me but if I went into a shop I would too) or when someone comes round to social distance talk to me, even though outside in the air. All my friends and carers have been wonderfully thoughtful putting a damn mask on so they don't breathe on what they bring round

I will be wearing a mask once us shielding lot are allowed out into other buildings or shops. I would be exempt from wearing a mask due to breathing problems, but still will do so. You can get easier breathe ones from amazon- it's really easy to find more suitable ones depending on your needs

Lots of people complaining on here. To someone like me it comes across as hollow and entitled

Those with Genuine medical reasons they can't then fair enough, I support you (including those with ptsd or autism etc )

If not, then just wear the damn mask (or scarf or whatever) to reduce transmission, so we can get back to normal, .. hell wear disposable gloves in shops, wash your hands lots, take whatever precautions you can, because you literally have many peoples lives in your hands. Not just yours.

TaxTheRatFarms · 11/07/2020 11:27

Genie, come on. You directed the comment a out her wishing more pensioners were dying at Sleepingpup, now you’re saying it’s people on other threads? Nothing to do with Sleepingpup then.

Yeah, but it's not me that's relishing every death, is it

Nor is Sleepingpup, or anyone on this thread Confused
