How long do people suspect they will be needed / kept mandatory?

@Thirdchild88

Sorry for my tone - I don’t seem to have communicated my point very well... My point wasn’t that it was stupid not to wear masks in shops... If 2m socially distancing is practiced there probably isn’t the need.

My point was that those who are acting like “it’s all over“ AND therefore being resistant to face coverings even in prolonged close contact situations such as hairdressers, that will be the reason more blanket measures will be brought in, even though the risk of transmission in a shop, especially if socially distanced, is likely to be tiny. By forcing the cultural change in this way, it is likely to reduce close, prolonged contact between strangers without a face covering. For instance, those hairdressers eschewing visors/masks will be less likely to do so of mask wearing becomes the norm.

But I've never been one to follow the herd so I can't really comment on the thought processes of the masses

😂😂🤣🤣

No Governor of Texas didn't follow the herd either.

And pity we didn't follow the herd in locking down earlier. We have world wide stand out death rates.

Derbygerbil · 12/07/2020 11:19

More evidence has come up to show that mask wearing can indeed help, and that surface transmission is less important than initially thought.

So in hindsight they should have focussed on face coverings rather than washing your hands for 20 seconds... But then hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I’m not criticising the Government for not having it!

I followed the science since the first news of the virus and don't criticise it too much either.

But it's not to say that hand hygiene isn't important. It still is.

But there's no real need to wash our shopping or such things. Grin

That was following the herd

In feb and march most of the uk didn't think it was a big deal. The uk government has always followed the herd not the science. We didn't lock down as public opinion wasn't in favour of lockdown.

TheLegendOfZelda · 12/07/2020 11:33

Apparently most people were then worried about how they were going to wipe their arses and there was a panic buying of toilet paper.

Whatevz

I really am not a go-to person if you want to understand the psychology of the masses, but I have noticed it rarely follows the science, or logic.

countrygirl99 · 12/07/2020 11:41

derbygerbil in my experience it's the mask wearers who are more likely to ignore social distancing. Admittedly I have only taken my non-masked face been to the supermarket and garden centre but the people getting close are far more like to be masked than unmasked even though they are a very small minority. That is the main reason compulsory mask wearing makes me feel uneasy.

Dorual · 12/07/2020 11:51

@countrygirl99 maybe you're just noticing the people near you more precisely because you're noticing their masks. I highly doubt that mask wearers are more likely to disregard social distancing, since they, on my opinion, are more likely to be the worried / cautious. I've never noticed mask wearers getting close. Just sounds like an excuse not to wear one.

Derbygerbil · 12/07/2020 12:04

@countrygirl99

Interesting study indicating the opposite

Well we can tiddle around arguing who the 'herd' actually was, but the UK locked down later in the day than many others. And is not wearing masks like many other countries..

And our death rates are stand out.

God alone knows what 'science' they follow.

countrygirl99 · 12/07/2020 12:30

doursl definitely not. I go to the supermarket first thing and there are usually only 3 or 4 people wearing masks out of around 30 customers. There will be 2 or 3 people ignoring distancing to a point of making me feel uncomfortable and the chances are none of them are not wearing masks. It's like they think they act as a protective cloak. I just think the idiote don't realise they are putting themselves at risk from me. My DIL who always wears a mask to shop has noticed the same.
derbygerbil I bet if I bothered to look I could find a study indicating the opposite to that one. It might even have been conducted in the UK. You wear a mask if you want to. I'll carry on keeping at a distance.

gotothecooler · 12/07/2020 12:50

Well there is a huge problem with social distancing being almost dropped due to mask wearing in Scotland and we are only on day 3.

What’s better I wonder in terms of transmission.... 2m and no mask, or 1m and mask?

Dorual · 12/07/2020 13:21

I'd think it's safer with both parties wearing a mask at 1m distance to be honest.

I agree.
LastTrainEast · 12/07/2020 14:21

Seat belts! ha! they are for bad drivers who might crash. and .. and people with seat belts and airbags are more likely to drive recklessly and and...It's not like you can die from a crash.

Anyway they can't tell me what to do so there!!!

Those planning on being stubborn for the sake of it will find that a shop can refuse to let you in without a mask and a bus refuse to let you on.

HeIenaDove · 12/07/2020 16:32

@Chessie678 Fab post Completely agree.
