How long do people suspect they will be needed / kept mandatory?

Judt because I won't go out to shop because I don't want to wear a mask doesn't mean I won't spend money. I'll just spend it online and have it delivered.

My0My · 11/07/2020 17:09

I know what lots of scientists say but there are also many who say other measure must be maintained and that there are issues around wearing masks. Not least the massive procurement needed to get effective ones to everyone. Every day and several a day. And safe disposal. Keeping a scarf around your mouth and nose for weeks on end is hardly great or hygienic. The science of everything else is perfect in lab conditions might say yes. The useless Brits who swarm to beaches and queue for Primark? I just Ds not see this working here.

*I would presume they had a medical condition that would mean they couldn’t wear one.

But at the moment, with lots of people just choosing not to wear one, I think that most people not wearing one are stupid/selfish because those people who can’t wear one are being given a bad name by those who think it impinges on their “freedoms”*

How will you know which ones have a medical condition and which ones are stupid/selfish?? Why do you feel the need to look at anyone and make a judgement on them anyway?
This has bought out all the judgemental twats who really should keep their noses out of everyone else's business.

But the science demonstrates that you wearing a mask would protect me, and me wearing a mask would protect you. So if the people around somebody don’t wear a mask, it is their business.

Masks aren’t ideal, but they are better than spreading something that can be deadly or have long term health implications. There are always exceptions to every rule, and therefore there will be people who genuinely can’t wear them. But otherwise, why wouldn’t everyone who can want to do their bit to help keep everyone safe. I don’t actually waste much headspace worrying about what everyone else is doing, but I’d rather briefly be a judgemental tw*t than someone who doesn’t care about anyone other than themselves.

That poster was answering someone else's question about "what do you think when you see someone without a mask?" Bit unfair to then jump on her for answering the question.

I wouldn't get myself worked up over seeing someone without a mask, the same as I didn't get myself worked up over seeing someone 'flouting' lockdown rules. Either way, either they've got a reasonable justification for it, or they haven't but there's not much I can do so may as well err on the side of assuming the best of total strangers.

It's not like one person not wearing a mask is going to make much of a difference anyway. Like with lockdown, it probably needs a certain percentage of the population to do it to make much difference. But like with lockdown I would think it best if people did stick with it where they could, so that collectively we have the highest chance of keeping virus transmission low.

It's a faff and I'd rather not wear one, but if it's a choice between "no shops" and "shops, but with masks" I am preferring the second option.

No, my elderly father had an Angina attack today because the store was too hot and he couldn't breathe through his mask. It should never be compulsory to wear one

I have actually come to the conclusion I don’t need to shop. I can think of little I need that I cannot get online.

I prefer to shop for a bit of fun and when thinking about buying something expensive but I bought a new Oven during lockdown as the door on mine shattered into 1000 pieces. I did the research and it arrived 2 days later with an installer.

I truly don’t need much either. I like to see what fresh food I’m buying but I’m not really bothered about much else. My houses are nicely furnished. My wardrobes are full. Overflowing even. I have the expensive perfumes I like and plenty of make up and I shopped at an online “sale” to keep me in Molton Brown bathing luxuries for a year. I’m struggling to think what I now need from a shop. All my books are purchased in line and magazines j subscribe to arrive on time.

I love antique jewellery and I will miss browsing for that. But I don’t need any more. I like finding that special piece though. So, I guess I’m useless for the retailers with shops. The unused retail space can now be converted to much needed housing. So shopping may well drop off from my list of activities.

Certainly until the end of winter and the regular flu/virus season is over.

I don’t understand why some people have such an issue with this? Obviously, if you have a respiratory condition, you will be exempted. Would be very easy to do efficiently. Your GP certifies that you have a medical condition and you’re given some sort of card to show in shops/public transport etc., like the blue badge which people don’t seem to be offended by. No need to state what the issue is.
It would be nice to think, as does the PM, that the Great British public can be relied upon to use common sense and honesty. Sadly, I think we know where that will get us.

@Itsarattrap Being excempted doesst stop this kind of shit but you and others just wont be told.

The video i saw was put up by a healthcare professional and member of BLM It was of a disabled man sitting on a bus with his crutches beside him not wearing a mask. She was shaming him for not wearing one. Her reaction to a disability blogger pointing out the equality issues was to block.

Itsarattrap · 11/07/2020 20:03

HelenaDove

I’m sorry, I don’t quite understand your anger.

Did the disabled man with crutches have respiratory problems?

There is no way of knowing, the health care 'professional' was wrong to post such a video - they, more than anybody, should know that there are many hidden disabilities and reasons for not wearing a mask that you cannot see.
HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:07

I dont know but the point is neither did she and she didnt have the right to Perhaps this will explain it better.........

i didnt see reams and reams of threads like this when the weakest in our society were losing their DLA. There were threads but nowhere near this amount!!

I suspect there is a direct correlation between those shaming people for not wearing masks and demanding to know the ins and outs of their medical conditions and those who thought/think most of those on DLA/PIP are scroungers.

So lets not pretend its about protecting the vulnerable shall we. Lets stop being disingenuous.

Its about getting out there and spending. Its about being able to go to the pub. Its about being able to go on holiday and EVERYONE wearing masks speeds that up.

The economy has taken a huge it

But dont pretend its about the vulnerable when they have already been bullied, harassed and filmed on public transport for not being able to wear masks.

And some companies are acting in a similar way One bus company deleted a social media post saying that from Monday 29th June passengers would have to PROVE their disability/medical condition if not wearing a mask. After they were told they were in breach of the Equality Act.

Prove you are disabled so you can get PIP
Prove you are disabled so you can get food delivered.
Prove you are disabled so you wont have your condition exacerbated by wearing a mask.

A sickening hat trick!

All about the vulnerable? Yeah Course it is!!

Itsarattrap · 11/07/2020 20:09

bettsbattenburg

Indeed, which is why I think a certified exemption card would stop any such nonsense. If you are on public transport without a mask, other passengers will know without a shadow of doubt that you are exempted.

Relying on people to be honest clouds the issue and makes it much harder for genuine exemptions. Too many people just lie.

My husband walks with a stick but there’s nothing wrong with his lungs.

Nothing to do with “people like me who won’t be told”! Parity, I’d have thought 🤷‍♀️

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:11

Having to whip your exemption card out to constantly prove your disability flies in the face of the Equality Act.

Itsarattrap · 11/07/2020 20:16

So we should just let people on the bus free because they claim to be a pensioner, let anyone who says they’re disabled park in a disabled bay because they claim to have a disability, let someone who looks young buy alcohol because they claim to be over 18? Etc.

Sorry, don’t see any difference?

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:16

My husband walks with a stick but there’s nothing wrong with his lungs

YOU know that what with being married to him and all That health "professional" didnt.

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:17

My husband has COPD and ischemic heart disease. He uses it because he cannot walk due to getting very out of breath.

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:18

"uses it" being his mobility scooter.

Itsarattrap · 11/07/2020 20:18

But he would wear a mask, Helena, because he doesn’t have a lung problem.

If he did, he would carry an exemption card if there were such a scheme.

I’m sorry, really don’t see why it’s any different to a blue badge. Don’t want to argue, wish you well, have a good evening,

HeIenaDove · 11/07/2020 20:20

Isnt it ironic that there was a green card years ago which people were all for abolishing....................now they want to bring back an equivalent.

RustyCohle · 11/07/2020 20:27

I’m amazed by how many people object. For the vast majority of people it’s a very minor inconvenience and it keeps us all safer.

It reminds me off people who used to object to seatbelts being compulsory.

PurpleDaisies · 11/07/2020 20:37

For the vast majority of people it’s a very minor inconvenience

Everyone wearing masks is a massive problem for people who rely on lip reading for communication because they have lower levels of hearing. That’s 12 million or 1 in 6 people in the U.K. who are very rarely mentioned as suffering when these discussions come up.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/07/2020 20:38

But if you want to claim an exemption why would it be wrong to have to prove it?

Most disabled parking require a blue badge. If you can claim free bus journeys you need to have a bus pass, be it an OAP one or student.

If wearing a mask is mandatory then you would be claiming an exemption not to wear it.
