How long do people suspect they will be needed / kept mandatory?

sorry to hear that. @HeIenaDove

Don't wear a mask.

HeIenaDove · 12/07/2020 00:39

Happy to wear a mask in to a medical setting I would expect to But am not prepared to risk complications for the high street which is what people want me to do.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 00:41

@YgritteSnow

yep it's like teenagers. All the huffing and puffing and me me me-ing.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 00:42

TBh @HeIenaDove no one wants medically exempt people to wear masks.

HeIenaDove · 12/07/2020 00:46

I do have a pre op scrub which i was told about by an RGN on here which i will use before putting a mask on. For going to medical settings and Tesco for essentials The scrub should help with this but just to go buy a top on the high street. No.

Im a bit surprised im getting such a hard time tbh I thought we were all about protecting the NHS. Me being this careful also puts less pressure on the NHS if they dont have to treat me for this surely.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 00:49

Just do it, and you can take it odd to smile at your baby outside or at home.
,
we hear about all these countries where people have just been getting on with it. Seems like it's just too hard here.

I think you're arguing with yourself now. As no one is arguing with you.

good night

HeIenaDove · 12/07/2020 01:33

Got no problem with a shield though.

SengaStrawberry · 12/07/2020 02:08

I’ll wear it now and while Covid was a threat

It becoming part of our culture and us all wearing them forever - nope.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/07/2020 02:13

I'll go out plenty, and I'll wear the mask. I won't linger in shops just to browse though, or pop in somewhere on the off chance there is something I like. I will want to get out and get it off

Doesn't mean that compulsory mask wearing shouldn't be introduced but I think it's disingenuous to suggest that it won't impact some people's shopping habits. It almost certainly will.

genteelwoman · 12/07/2020 03:29

I honestly thought we would get on with the masks like the rest of the world and happily wear them. However, reading this thread has made me realise we will likely have the same tantrums thrown in America by people refusing to wear masks to enter the shops and going on about their rights.

sigh we are in for it

I despair

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 12/07/2020 03:42

I'm in an American state where masks have been mandatory for weeks. It's irritating, but it's certainly not stopping me from shopping, and generally going out.

Some people wear them just walking down the street - I do in more crowded areas, but not when I'm walking my dog in quiet areas in the evening, for example. Pedestrians just give each other a wide berth!

I don't think it's worth getting upset about, it's better to be cautious than have people coughing on each other. It's also a visual reminder to continue being careful - and as infection rates continue to drop in this area , I can't really complain. Better cautious than otherwise.

Chessie678 · 12/07/2020 05:53

I don’t think many on this thread have said they will protest or refuse to wear a mask in places where they are mandatory. Most including me have just said that it will impact where they go. I was going to start going to the cinema and non essential shopping for example but don’t see the point if you have to wear a mask. That’s not having a strop - it’s just exercising a choice in the same way that I wouldn’t choose to go on a beach holiday in a country which requires women to wear a veil - it just wouldn’t be enjoyable for me. It isn’t that I expect anyone to be bothered by me making that choice. Clearly some people don’t mind wearing a mask and will go out for a day wearing one but even people who are pro mandatory masks have said that they are uncomfortable but manageable for 20 minutes while you dash in and out of the supermarket.

I said that I wanted my baby to be able to see me which was probably me being over sensitive but he was having his vaccinations at the time and very upset. This was just a small example of the negatives of wearing a mask for me.

I think it’s reasonable to ask that if the requirement is brought in it is done so together with a test for when it can be relaxed e.g when fewer than 1 in 10,000 people are infected but I don’t think we’ll get that. There are already people on this thread arguing that masks should become a permanent feature which is exactly what I’m concerned about.

I am tired of being told that every measure brought in to combat the virus is trivial. I have seen this applied to children losing education, not having proper postnatal support, not being able to see family etc. I don’t personally find a requirement to cover your face in public that trivial and certainly not when added to the many other restrictions in our lives at the moment. I don’t think it’s really for others to decide that it’s trivial because it’s a matter of personal perception.

PinPon · 12/07/2020 05:57

I’ve started doing much of my shopping online. However when I go into a real shop or a crowded area, I do wear a mask.

Mascotte · 12/07/2020 06:58

@Chessie678 good post.

Thirdchild88 · 12/07/2020 07:17

@Chessie678 I agree with everything you've said, very well put.

HairyToity · 12/07/2020 07:19

Till next Spring. I would feel much more comfortable getting out and about if everyone wore masks indoors.

ginsparkles · 12/07/2020 07:44

I work in retail. Yesterday there was a distinct increase in the number of masks being worn in our local town. I agree with pp that actually maybe the more people wear them the safer people may feel.
I started with a reusable fabric one and felt really uncomfortable, so have switched to the disposable ones which feel better, I can breathe more easily in it, fits better and my glasses steam up less. At work we have screens so I don't need to wear a mask, and have visors for when we can't stay behind the screen.
I do think if those that can wear them, do and come out to shop, those that can't will be better protected and retail can survive.

Miserablemoan · 12/07/2020 08:06

Agree completely with Chessie.
It’s not having a tantrum to say you’d rather not do the things that necessitate mask wearing.

Costacoffeeplease · 12/07/2020 08:26

As I’ve said, masks are mandatory here, I haven’t said they’re uncomfortable or only wearable for 20 minutes. I wore one for approx 3 hours on Friday, and have had an eye test, ecg, heart ultrasound and several meetings with officialdom (we love a bit of bureaucracy here, even in a pandemic) all whilst wearing a mask. Zero problems

Our local council issued free masks to all households when they became mandatory, and hardly anyone uses the disposable ones

PrincessButtockUp · 12/07/2020 08:35

For anyone saying there isn't going to be a second wave, there is a hospital relatively near to us which had to close A&E recently because so many of its staff are off sick with COVID-19. In July. What's it going to be like in the winter? And this isn't hearsay, this was an official communication from someone in authority.

And that means there's definitely going to be a second wave because?
Sunshinegirl82 · 12/07/2020 08:43

@chessie678

I completely agree.

I would 100% struggle to wear a mask for 3 hours and would only do so for something that was a total necessity. No way I would do it for any kind of optional or leisure activity. I wore one for 20 minutes yesterday whilst getting DS2 some shoes (he is 14 months). He screamed every time he looked at me and I was literally ripping the thing off my face as we got out of the shop. It was not a fun experience.

I accept that others will feel perfectly happy to wander around in a mask for hours on end. As this thread shows not everyone feels the same, the people that feel like me will I expect choose to do similar to me. Comply but limit activities to those that are completely essential.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 08:52

Mask wearing is not really very nice. Life is much better without. 100% agree.

But there is a point to it.
