Hairdresser didn’t have a mask/visor

Hi,

I took my 4 year old to have his hair cut tonight. We went after I’d finished work/he’d finished nursery and there was no queue so straight in, 2 people already in the chairs. I had a mask for my son to wear but he was only holding it over his mouth and it only lasted about 5 minutes as it got hair in it and was uncomfortable for him. My husband asked if all the hairdressers had masks/visors on... but they didn’t. I’m now so worried and feel so guilty. I should have known, I did know, they were meant to have PPE but it just didn’t register at the time. I’m scared I’ve put us at risk and we’ve been so carful - not even seen my parents as I know my son won’t be able to keep away from them.

In my opinion you need to report this business to your local council! I'm a hairdresser and am wearing all necessary ppe and extras! We've had spot checks from our local council to make sure we are complying with guidelines too!
Did they take contact details from you for track and trace purposes?

Summerdays2014 · 09/07/2020 20:10

Yes they took details and had sanitiser at the door Which we used upon entering and exiting.

Lazy as fuck. What’s the point of hand sanitizer while breathing all over you for an extended period of time.

They’re also have to close and isolate for two weeks if a customer tests positive. So shortsighted too.

BowiesJumper · 09/07/2020 20:19

Wow that seems crazy. I’d report them.

daisymay133 · 09/07/2020 20:24

Mine had visits today but they took them off when not directly working with client

They said they struggle to see through them properly

I would be worried

Clients are not asked to wear masks

DryHeave · 09/07/2020 20:27

Measures individuals are taking are all a performance right now. We need effective test, track & trace. The government are trying to make the rest of us think that a spray of this here or a plastic visor there will make the difference. It won’t.

BryanFerrysmum · 09/07/2020 20:30

A barber local to me has had people sitting inside waiting, maximum chairs being used and the barber's wearing neither masks nor visors. Idiots! I'm actually referring to the people who actually went to get their hair cut there. You could clearly see the situation from outside so why go in? Oh and no cleaning of workstations between customers

Summerdays2014 · 09/07/2020 20:33

Yes @BryanFerrysmum I’m in idiot. Hence why I feel so guilty and worried now.

I wouldn’t worry too much - just because someone isn’t wearing a mask it doesn’t mean they have Covid and will infect you. The chance of this is extremely low

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/07/2020 20:41

Wouldn't bother me.

TheChineseChicken · 09/07/2020 20:43

Reading that back it sounds like I’m saying they don’t need to worry about wearing one. Of course they absolutely should! What I mean is don’t waste too much time panicking about a one off. Probably a good idea to call the salon to complain though

sauvignonblancplz · 09/07/2020 20:44

Really wouldn’t bother me , your child has been in nursery all day and you at work. You’re travelling about people .
The risk isn’t high.
Like someone said upthread this is all performance .

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2020 20:46

Buy some clippers. A 4 yo hair cut isn't worth the stress.

Mustbetimeforachange · 09/07/2020 20:49

There are currently between about 3 & 8 cases per 100,000 people, depending on where you live. I think the chances of your hairdresser being one of those, or even coming in to contact with one of those is remote. I agree they should follow the rules, but I don't think you should worry unduly.

LilBlackLab · 09/07/2020 20:51

Have the government stated it’s mandatory to wear face masks for hairdressers?

Mnhealth202020 · 09/07/2020 20:55

Am I missing something here? What if the staff member is exempt from wearing masks/visors?

SpillTheTeaa · 09/07/2020 20:55

My BIL is a barber and no one is allowed to wait in the shop. Takes details and numbers and lets them know when it's their time to come in. Wears mask and visor too. I'd report them they have to wear them.

BananaPop2020 · 09/07/2020 20:55

Wouldn’t concern me at all. The risk is vanishingly small.

SpillTheTeaa · 09/07/2020 20:56

I would suspect if they had health issues making them exempt from wearing a mask they should be shielding, no?

waitingforthestan · 09/07/2020 20:56

If you had seen this and decided not to get your sons hair cut I would agree with reporting them.

But you used the service, and you say it didn't register with you but how could it not, it's been months of hand washing and masks.

Your worried about your ds catching Covid but a quick google will show you the risk for dc age 4 is extremely extremely low. He would have more of a risk catching it a Tesco's or his nursery.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2020 20:57

DH had his hair cut this morning and the hairdresser was wearing a mask but no visor. They didn't take his contact details but I'm presuming that's because I booked his appointment though FB messenger.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/07/2020 20:58

I wouldn’t worry, it’s done now, but agree you should report the business as they are supposed to be wearing masks at least!

A child at your kids nursery could be a hairdresser!

Mnhealth202020 · 09/07/2020 21:05

@SpillTheTeaa

I would suspect if they had health issues making them exempt from wearing a mask they should be shielding, no?
Not necessarily. Eg people with mild athsma don’t need to shield yet can be exempt from wearing masks. There’s a wide range of conditions that are valid mask exemptions, including mental health issues.

This forum is strange. On other threads regarding masks on public transportation/public places, it seems like lots of posters have a hidden exemption eg panic attacks due to past abuse. Whereas on this thread, where another member of the public didn’t wear a mask, they aren’t given the same consideration?

wanderings · 09/07/2020 21:10
