Aibu to think this is VERY unfair the household incomes of £100k plus should be tax EVEN further?!

@Waxonwaxoff0 because your income ISNT £100k after earning that. It's more like £58,000. Which after bills, childcare, mortgage etc. There's not much left over!!!

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2020 21:06

Yeah let's reduce NMW then those bastards who live a life of luxury can pay it, right op?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/07/2020 21:06

@WellDoneBridge so? People manage on much less than that.

HatRack · 05/07/2020 21:06

Op can you explain why you are "strapped"?

Or are you purposely dodging the Q

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 05/07/2020 21:08

As soon as we started doing things like allowing all businesses to furlough staff (and I know some companies took advantage of the scheme because of the way it was structured - believe me, relief didn't just go to those who needed it), I knew I'd be paying back the coronavirus bill for the rest of my lifetime.

Is it going to be fair? Probably not, but considering how many frontline NHS workers went into work during this period and died, I can't get upset in the way perhaps I would have done previously. There's also the issue of the people who have directly supported me - the bin collectors, the delivery drivers - I'm pretty sure they're earning a lot less than me - if one of us has to take the hit, it makes more sense it's me. They've contributed more to society in ways that count more.

Nothing is particularly fair at the moment, but if I had to pick one type of unfairness, I'd take my tax bill over risking my life as a key worker.

WellDoneBridge · 05/07/2020 21:08

@hadenoughbleach

Thank you! Honestly, why should I work twice as hard to be taxed twice as much.

Might as well stay in my role. If I go up a pay level it's triple the work for not much more!!

And how much do you think lower earners have left after bills, childcare and mortgage? Alot less than you! Honestly, there is hundreds of thousands of people who would gladly swap with you right now. People lost their jobs through covid and wondering how they will pay bills at all and buy food, and you think your money problems are bad?

WellDoneBridge · 05/07/2020 21:11

@hatrack I'm not purposely avoiding the question of being strapped.

I have about £500 left over which isn't much - after all bills

OP posts:
WellDoneBridge · 05/07/2020 21:12

Agreed @resume - definitely increase but not make the wealthiest foot the bill. A few pennies aren't going to affect many!

OP posts:
meow1989 · 05/07/2020 21:13

@welldonebridge actually that's more like £75000 (pre pension costs).

If the average (mindful that average means as many people earning less than more) salary as a pp quoted is £35000, just say you have two people on that so £70000 pre tax, that's £54882 pre pension.

That's a fair wack difference and even less after mortgage, child care, car costs etc.

Ragwort · 05/07/2020 21:15

Stay in your role then .

People always ignore the fact that they have made choices - to have children, to use childcare, to not work evenings/weekends, to live in expensive parts of the country etc etc etc.

Ragwort · 05/07/2020 21:16

£500 left after bills !!!!! Try joining the real world & volunteer at your local Food Bank?

cologne4711 · 05/07/2020 21:17

I am happy to pay more income tax.

I'd be annoyed if they came after me with a wealth tax because I don't have a mortgage though. I deliberately bought a smaller house than I could have perhaps afforded precisely so I could pay the mortgage off early.

WellDoneBridge · 05/07/2020 21:19

@Ragwort aim high Ragwort, aim high.

100k or 58k... strapped?! You're having a bloody laugh! Grin

Lucindainthesky · 05/07/2020 21:23

Strapped for cash on 100K?

Jesus

WellDoneBridge · 05/07/2020 21:23

@newphoneswhodis

Oh didums. Must be so hard. Poor you.
And you too when hospital consultants have to cut their hours because of the impact of tax meaning you have to wait longer for an operation.
Cherryghost · 05/07/2020 21:25

*Why should I work twice as hard to be taxed twice as much?
*
A high salary doesn't mean you necessarily work harder than someone on national minimum wage.
There are plenty of hard workers on low wages

Hermano · 05/07/2020 21:26

Only £500 excess per month? Diddums.

Do you have any idea how many people work incredibly hard in poor paying jobs and have barely £50 per month excess? Lots. And lots and lots.

Of course higher earners should shoulder more of the costs. They are able to. Low earners aren't. It really is that simple.

Two higher rate tax payers in this house, combined income of approx £130K, happy to pay more tax. I will vote for the political party which wants to tax me most, because I recognise my privilege and want to live in a country where things are a bit more equal.
My life is easier and happier if everyone has enough. If there are people all over my city desperate enough for money that they might rob me at any given moment then I don't feel safe and secure.

I grew up on benefits, I know how crap it is. And it's got a lot worse since then.
The lowest income households have no more to give, us higher earners do. Simple

Totally agree that tax dodging corporations need to pay their share too. Why oh why do people get so worked up over the tiny cost of benefit scroungers but shrug their shoulders and accept Amazon etc dodging amounts of tax which make benefit fraud pale into insignificance?

People are weird

TheLegendOfZelda · 05/07/2020 21:29

How about it comes from inherited wealth instead?

Sparklfairy · 05/07/2020 21:29

OP what's getting people's backs up is that people can't afford to have the bills/lifestyle you have. You spend (almost) up to your income by choice, by living in London, and whatever nice things you have.

It's possible to be on a million a year and be "strapped" by your definition. But when economies change the first thing you do is adjust your outgoings. You are in the very lucky position to be able to do that, as I very much doubt you are a frugal penny pincher with those bills. People already on the breadline don't have that wiggle room. This affects everyone, you'll just have to get used to it.

Seriouslyconfused3 · 05/07/2020 21:31

My heart is bleeding for the high earners here. This has got to be a wind up Hmm High earners working twice has hard as the lowly minimum wage earners? I’ll believe it when I see it
