Who else is convinced we may have a second wave over Autumn/Winter?

Hi everyone. Is anyone else like me convinced we will have a second wave over Autumn/Winter? Both myself and my husband are in the at risk categories. He because he has Asthma and myself because I have a fairly low immunity because of various health conditions and because I'm obese and also Vitamin D deficient which have both been extra factors according the news. Well I've already started buying a few extra bits anticipating that all this will happen again. Not stockpiling but buying toilet paper, paracetamol, gluten free pasta, flour, things that were hard to get at the beginning. Although flour and baking items still always seem to be unavailable even now every time I try and order them. I get my shopping delivered. All of our household can only take paracetamol as a painkiller so when my husband is having a migraine and takes the maximum dose a day and I often suffer from headaches and pain that can mean 1 box used in just one day. Don't get me wrong I'm not stockpiling and have a bunker full of stuff but just want to be a bit prepared as sadly I think Coronavirus is going to be around for a long time. Anyone else feeling the same ? ☺️

I'm not convinced.

But I certainly think it is possible, and quite a number of organisations are contingency planning.

Sorting out your household priorities, a bit at a time, over 2+ months is probably more sensible, and less of a burden on supply chains, than trying to do a big shop when your local numbers took adverse

BumbleWumble · 02/07/2020 19:15

I think numbers will increase but they'll try to keep it more under control as we can't afford another lockdown. I hope I am wrong, although I can't see the opening of the pubs is going to help keep numbers down.

Realitea · 02/07/2020 19:29

Please don’t stock up on stuff. You don’t need to. It doesn’t effect the supply chain. The more people hear that others are doing it, the more they’ll be inclined to do it and that’s how the problem starts.
Vulnerable people went without and it’s not fair.

MrsMeg1 · 02/07/2020 19:36

I think it’s reasonable & sensible to be prepared, I think we’ll have a rise in cases in Autumn coinciding not long after the full return of schools.
If people start panic buying again you won’t have to join them!

Keepdistance · 02/07/2020 19:36

Seeing the school guidance then yes 100% maybe 4-5w after schools go back.
It may go slower than last time due to 6% immunity. And especially in london.
I would start buying now. As i agree there is stuff you still cant get. The suppy chain adjusts to what you are buying.
Also some idiots will be on holiday abroad so we can buy what they are not.

lughnasadh · 02/07/2020 19:36

I'm more worried about a no deal Brexit at the end of the year.

There won't be a supply chain.

It will make Covid look like the halcyon days.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/07/2020 19:42

@Realitea honestly, buying a couple of extra bits here and there well in advance is fine. What caused the problem last time was everyone suddenly buying several week's worth in one go. It's only because of the peppers that it wasn't worse.

LucyLocketsPocket · 02/07/2020 19:43

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jenny Harries certainly thinks so!

Who else is convinced we may have a second wave over Autumn/Winter?
Juststopswimming · 02/07/2020 19:44

Seriously someone is calling people going abroad idiots in the same sentence as recommending stockpiling?! I despairConfused

Tinamou · 02/07/2020 19:46

It's certainly a possibility. The problem is that no one knows if or when there will be a second wave, making it very difficult to plan for.

Deblou43 · 02/07/2020 19:47

Personally I think it has been here since December so we shall see

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/07/2020 19:48

Juststopswimming what's wrong with stockpiling? Are you confusing it with panic buying? Two very different things.

ShellsAndSunrises · 02/07/2020 19:48

I don’t think so. I did, but logically if there was going to be one, VE Day and the like should have caused one, I think...

But I’ll be half-ready in my head anyway, just incase.

Bluemoooon · 02/07/2020 19:49

if they get the testing and contacting sorted then by winter any outbreaks should be able to be confined to small groups or areas.

NeverTwerkNaked · 02/07/2020 19:49

Yes I think a second wave is the most likely scenario

SunbathingDragon · 02/07/2020 19:49

Yes, I think we will. What we need to hope is that the wave is not bigger than we’ve already had and that we are able to think/plan well to stay ahead of it.

Llamazoom · 02/07/2020 19:50

I am going to slowly stock up for winter, a couple of extras each week and buy another freezer next month. Also going to buy Christmas presents early.

The infection rate will go up in the winter months, I don’t think anybody can deny that.

It would be prudent to have supplies in case of having to isolate or illness. Stocking up on long life stuff now cuts your time in supermarkets in the winter months, I can imagine we will be queueing in the cold and rain. Delivery slots will be hard to come by again, more people will want delivery rather than risk infection or queue in the cold.

I have a gut feeling that education will be hit and miss by October half term and at best close early for the Christmas break.

@Realitea It sounds like op is vulnerable, an extra £15 spent a week on supplies to slowly stock up during the summer isn’t panic buying. Panic buying is filling 2 trolleys and spending ££££ on one huge shop.

I want to hibernate and wake up in spring 2021.

Op, stock up on the bits you need, I wouldn’t judge anybody who did.

Orangesox · 02/07/2020 19:53

I wouldn't count on there not being a second wave, put it that way! There isn't enough evidence either way, and it'll all be very much guess work. I'm preparing my organisation for a winter battle plan though - Flu Season will see employee numbers self- isolating soar even if it's just for a few days until they get a test to rule out SARS-CoV2, we can't afford to be in the lurch without a plan.

I'm an every day prep-er though; we always have enough food in to last a few weeks if something goes Pete Tong, we bulk buy a lot of our staples from Costco / wholesalers so nothings changed there other than I won't let stocks dwindle quite as much as usual.

Todaythiscouldbe · 02/07/2020 19:53

I agree with this. I actually think we have had the second wave and now it will be isolated outbreaks.
Llamazoom · 02/07/2020 19:58

@ShellsAndSunrises VE Day was mostly celebrated outside, it was warm and sunny, most people socialised and socially distanced outdoors where the virus doesn’t transmit easily.

Pubs, restaurants, cinemas and other businesses opening to the public will get the infection rates slowly rising again, schools opening with full capacity, flights jam packed with holidaymakers won’t help either. We all want our normal back and I don’t blame anybody for wanting to do any of the above but indoor activities means a rise in infections.

Mangofandangoo · 02/07/2020 19:59

How long did the BLM movement start.. over 14 days ago. HUGE gatherings of people with very little social distancing - so we have a second wave now? There's your answer.

The problem in autumn will be everyone will get sick because that's what happens when kids go back to school, colds linger, sickness bugs, snotty noses but everyone will panic

Llamazoom · 02/07/2020 19:59

@Todaythiscouldbe if it was here in December why were there no extra deaths?

Mrsfussypants1 · 02/07/2020 20:13

I have to admit I've started to buy extra non perishables (toilet roll, shampoo, food stuff) with my regular shopping specially if they've been on offer. Not for fear of second wave, though it's possible but because I see tough times ahead financially. Both daughter and son in law have been made redundant today (retail and manufacturing) and DHs company about to fold so it looks like I'll be the only one working in the autumn. The first wave has didn't hit us health wise but massively financially, I want to be prepared for a second just in case.

Jenasaurus · 02/07/2020 20:17

I suspect by the end of October we may well have a second wave, I think once the airports open and the schools go back, pubs open, if we haven't stamped out the majority of cases and don't have test and trace in place properly, then sadly I do think a second wave is on the cards, just before Christmas, perhaps.

Mrsfussypants1 · 02/07/2020 20:18

I've also got a bit for Christmas and winter clothes for grandaughter from the winter sales already as I'm a keen bargain hunter and just in case of Brexit/covid/unemployment.
