Who else is convinced we may have a second wave over Autumn/Winter?

Hi everyone. Is anyone else like me convinced we will have a second wave over Autumn/Winter? Both myself and my husband are in the at risk categories. He because he has Asthma and myself because I have a fairly low immunity because of various health conditions and because I'm obese and also Vitamin D deficient which have both been extra factors according the news. Well I've already started buying a few extra bits anticipating that all this will happen again. Not stockpiling but buying toilet paper,paracetamol,gluten free pasta,flour,things that were hard to get at the beginning. Although flour and baking items still always seem to be unavailable even now every time I try and order them. I get my shopping delivered. All of our household can only take paracetamol as a painkiller so when my husband is having a migraine and takes the maximum dose a day and I often suffer from headaches and pain that can mean 1 box used in just one day. Don't get me wrong I'm not stockpiling and have a bunker full of stuff but just want to be a bit prepared as sadly I think Coronavirus is going to be around for a long time. Anyone else feeling the same ? ☺️

@BackInTime

Apparently people are buying loo roll again 🙄
Well they've almost used up the 6 month stash 😂
Howaboutanewname · 03/07/2020 21:52

My cupboards are stocked up and I have extra loo roll sitting in an en-suite for emergencies! I have extras of cleaning materials and the freezer is full. We have used local suppliers for fruit and veg and will continue to do so, the milkman brings milk, bread and eggs which we will continue with until we are free of a second wave. We could go a good 4 weeks without a delivery, I am now basically rotating food in my cupboards so they remain full and we don’t waste anything.

Is anyone still struggling to get pasta? I cannot get a big bag (the 3kg ones) from Asda in my delivery for love nor money!

mummymayhem18 · 03/07/2020 22:45

@Howaboutanewname yes pasta is still a bit tricky to get. I didn't even realise they did big bags that size. I normally buy gluten free pasta which is only in 500g bags so doesn't last long between 3 of us. But it's really only me that needs to have the gluten free so I could buy the normal pasta for them. I don't know about some of you living in different areas of the country but whenever I book my online order now flour,bread mix ,baking powder and other baking ingredients etc is still often unavailable as are things like dettol wipes,pasta and rice can also be a bit hit and miss.

I think the question is wrong.

It will be local lockdowns like Leicester, in order to avert a bigger peak/ wave.

Jan feb are going to be the worst imo if a vaccine isn't ready. Post Xmas.

So it's more about being aware of your own area.

Unfortunately I think schools may impact this within the autumn term, almost certainly after Xmas and they may find they just naturally close due to the rules.
@Todaythiscouldbe if it was here in December why were there no extra deaths?
I don’t know the answer to your question but it’s been proved it was in Italy and France in December. With no noticeable increase in deaths.

Italy they went back and looked at lab samples from a deceased patient who died of coronavirus symptoms and at the time they didnt know why he was so ill. The same,es were posted. In France they’ve detected the virus in frozen sewage samples from December.

So it’s very likely it was also in the U.K.

I think we will definately get a second wave. schools will be more shut than open and lots of local lockdown.

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/07/2020 08:58

@lughnasadh

I'm more worried about a no deal Brexit at the end of the year.

There won't be a supply chain.

It will make Covid look like the halcyon days.

Good God, yes. @mummymayhem18 Have you read the prepping threads? They have great advice.

"schools will be more shut than open and lots of local lockdown"

I think this is quite possible. I also think that after a late summer pause, the shielded may well be spending the 'virus season' indoors, because if that 2million got it, it would halt the NHS for everyone else. That includes 90,000 children

So schools which can deliver online learning (instead of, for lockdowns; parallel to, for these in isolation for 14 days or indefinitely) are likely to have much better outcomes

Yes, more work for schools. But a more realistic scenarios than full on site attendance at schools this autumn?

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/07/2020 09:08

The point though of schools shutting after 2 cases in 14 days would be to try to remotely control the virus before it starts to spread.

I do think we will have local area lock downs and lots of disruption but those things are hopefully in order to avert a full second wave which means a national Lockdown.

To answer the op, I'd consider putting to one side some extra bits and bobs but the infrastructure will hopefully survive. As a pp said, brexit may have more of an impact tbh.

I'm going to be organising some things things now from the POV of a difficult and unpredictable winter eg children's birthday presents etc.

MRex · 04/07/2020 10:01

Hope for the best, plan for the worst. I'm expecting at a minimum that we will have to isolate a few times due to DS winter colds, but I'm hopeful that kids being sent home ill might reduce those bugs to a more manageable level. I'm also hopeful that one of the vaccines will work with our parents near the front of the queue, so that they get their lives back.

I believe it's inevitable as this virus rotates around the world with some countries in lockdown / factories with workers isolating that some supply chains will get disrupted further over winter. The supply chains rely on early preppers in times of increased demand, increasing the JIT required stocks weeks before others catch up to buy those stocks. It shouldn't be as bad for last minute shoppers this time because everyone's already buying home lunches now, because there are new local supply chains, because the supermarkets are preparing better, and because supermarkets know how to ration now. Our usual stocks in the house and deliveries held up well even with all the extra bits needed for family and neighbours (the great yeast hunt ended with a haul being divided up between about 15 houses in the end when one neighbour got several 5kg packets). I haven't built back up stocks of some items yet but starting to get extras now as the offers start up againbecause of increased supplies. PP needn't worry about people being plunged into starvation because we store some extra hellman's olive oil mayo to see us through winter, we'll just be one less trolley in the supermarket again.
