Who else is convinced we may have a second wave over Autumn/Winter?

Hi everyone. Is anyone else like me convinced we will have a second wave over Autumn/Winter? Both myself and my husband are in the at risk categories. He because he has Asthma and myself because I have a fairly low immunity because of various health conditions and because I'm obese and also Vitamin D deficient which have both been extra factors according the news. Well I've already started buying a few extra bits anticipating that all this will happen again. Not stockpiling but buying toilet paper, paracetamol, gluten free pasta, flour, things that were hard to get at the beginning. Although flour and baking items still always seem to be unavailable even now every time I try and order them. I get my shopping delivered. All of our household can only take paracetamol as a painkiller so when my husband is having a migraine and takes the maximum dose a day and I often suffer from headaches and pain that can mean 1 box used in just one day. Don't get me wrong I'm not stockpiling and have a bunker full of stuff but just want to be a bit prepared as sadly I think Coronavirus is going to be around for a long time. Anyone else feeling the same ? ☺️

@Mrsfussypants1 💐 keep your chin up.

megletthesecond · 02/07/2020 20:26

I can't see how we won't have one.
I'm buying extra bits and even bought some shelves to stash it on.

Who knows what's a cold and what's CV this winter Confused?

Todaythiscouldbe · 02/07/2020 20:30
@Todaythiscouldbe if it was here in December why were there no extra deaths?
Possibly the second wave was stronger, the virus had mutated. Much like the flu pandemic in 1918/19

StrangeAddiction · 02/07/2020 20:32

We're starting to plan for winter and I suppose in a way, Brexit.

We've just done a subscribe and save on Amazon for bulky essentials such as cat food, toilet roll, soap powder and softener etc.

We've been getting shopping delivered so plan to carry on anyway but let's face it, who wants to queue in the cold/rain/snow for shopping so I'll be adding on extras in my weekly shopping to stock up so then if we have a bad winter like we did in 2010 where the whole country came to a practical stand still I won't have to worry and if needed to share anything with family or neighbours who might need something quickly.

BackInTime · 02/07/2020 20:32

Apparently people are buying loo roll again 🙄

winterisstillcoming · 02/07/2020 20:33

I think the second wave will come in the form of further localised lockdowns. Hopefully better tracing and isolating will avoid blanket measures but who knows.

Mrsfussypants1 · 02/07/2020 20:35

llama thank you, It's been a teary day today before I even heard this news. It could be worse, we have each other and we are healthy. I've had heard some heart breaking stories at work from clients that it puts it into perspective a bit.

Jenasaurus · 02/07/2020 20:36

Its a bit of a concern that todays figures are so late.

LynetteScavo · 02/07/2020 20:40

I stocked up for Brexit then was prepared with 2 weeks of food etc just incase. I'm going to keep stocked up now: who know what might happen? W swarms of locusts? Flooding? The sky falling in? What ever it is I'm gong to have supplies just in case. There is still the risk my family my have to self isolate, so it makes sense to be prepared.

If there is a second wave I'll be more bothered about my DC missing education than anything else. I think a second wave in winter is a distinct possibility.

Keepdistance · 02/07/2020 21:07

Just- it's all very well saying that but maybe you didnt read the thread where a mum had a child with a fever should have been SI the fanily but had run out of food so was sending teen dc next day....
Wouldnt listen to reason. Wouldnt even try to order online (though to be fair that would likely have been different). The reality is people need 2w worth of food and essentials in the house.
And yes people are idiots for flying, just as those were who flew just before lockdown and got stuck as were the ones going on cruises who got stuck

tobee · 02/07/2020 21:34

@lughnasadh

I'm more worried about a no deal Brexit at the end of the year.

There won't be a supply chain.

It will make Covid look like the halcyon days.

Today's figures are in and they're not bad thankfully! Smile

Thanks everyone who replied. In fairness to the poster who commented saying "apparently people are buying toilet roll again " that has been one of the extras I buy and always has been as I have bowel and bladder conditions so it has always been something I don't let get low anyway. And why shouldn't we be prepared for ourselves and families. I have always been someone who doesn't let things get low. Once I open for instance the last ketchup bottle then I will order another one in or have a replacement already. This is how I've always been. There is a difference between panic buying and stocking up on extras every week you do your shopping in preparation for what may come. Like another person said it's the long life products and essentials.
I also like @Llamazoom have bought some Christmas presents already for my teenage daughter like jewellery, make up she likes, trainers and stocking bits for my mum and husband. Things that I know they will like. Anyway I absolutely love Christmas and always start from the summer holidays onwards or when I see bargains anyway.
@Mrsfussypants1 I'm really sorry that your family is struggling at the moment and its hitting you hard. I hope you get some good news soon and a lucky break so all the financial pressure doesn't fall on your shoulders.

mummymayhem18 thank you x

BananaPop2020 · 02/07/2020 22:00

Please don’t worry unduly about this, there is as much speculation there WON’T be a second wave as there will. Panic is way more contagious.

larrygrylls · 02/07/2020 22:04

Hoping and moderately optimistic we will have a vaccine by late this year. We have the Oxford candidate making progress and Pfizer stock up over the last two days on a successful trial of one of their candidate vaccines.

It is not all bad news.

lljkk · 02/07/2020 22:08

I don't know what a "second wave" is. Seriously. I started a thread to ask "How would you know if we had a 2nd wave" and the most specific answer was "more cases and deaths than I feel comfortable with but after the first wave".

So can't answer your question as phrased, OP. I don't have a clue what you're asking about.

AdoptedBumpkin · 02/07/2020 22:10

It wouldn't surprise me, especially as a lot of people will be going away in August and so on.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/07/2020 22:14

I am more concerned about having to isolate and not being able to get out. I’m a lecturer and the summer to Christmas stint is bug-central with coughs and colds, even without Covid.

We are not preppers by any means, but I tend to buy yellow stickered things as I see them and pop them in the freezer, always have plenty tins, and buy things like toothpaste and shower gel on offer as standard. Our cat only uses the litter tray in dire straits, so we are good for that, but we keep decent stocks of her food because she’s a fussy monkey.

Dadnotamum72 · 02/07/2020 22:14

I think you've got 3 scenarios.

1.Carry on as we are, keep things relatively under control and nearly get back to normal and a few minor issues.
2.life slowly gets back to normal but still mostly distancing etc, cases rise a fair bit and a difficult winter with losts of localised lockdowns etc.

 1. All out dissaster along the lines of spanish flu and a full on outbreak with god knows what resriction/ outcomes.

And anyones guess which way it will go.

FrugiFan · 02/07/2020 22:19

@LucyLocketsPocket

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jenny Harries certainly thinks so!
Did you actually read the quote you posted?

Jenny Harries says it is a "possibility" and "not ruled out". Hardly sounds like she is "certainly convinced" there will be a second wave.

Everyone is aware it is a possibility and I think it is sensible to be prepared for thsy eventuality. I think a second lockdown is very unlikely and, while there may be a second wave it will probably be a lower wave but perhaps for longer. We have more awareness of the virus, far more testing and treatment so the NHS is less likely to be overwhelmed. If we continue with social distancing, test and trace and local lockdowns the second wave need not be as devastating as the first (assuming it even happens).

FrugiFan · 02/07/2020 22:22

@megletthesecond

That's what the tests are for
FrugiFan · 02/07/2020 22:27

I personally like to have at least 2 of everything in the cupboard. For example 2 jars of peanut butter - one open and being used and one sealed. When the open one runs out, I open the sealed one and buy a new one for the cupboard. To me that is just good sense and we are able to afford to do it and have the space. Over lockdown we never went without but did start to open the "backup" products without being able to replace them. Now that supply chains are better I'm restocking. That is not panic buying.

mummymayhem18 · 02/07/2020 22:31

I know it's not obviously going to disappear and like others have said the winter and schools, etc bring lots of the usual coughs, colds, flu, norovirus etc out and about. Let's just hope that it doesn't go back to a full lockdown if the numbers do start to creep up again. It would be horrible to go back to square one as it were. Although having to stay at home is a small price to pay for all the people losing loved ones and friends to the horrible pandemic and the wonderful frontline workers that keep us all going whether it be in the hospitals or the shops etc. I for one can't wait for my daughter to get back to school and try and get back into a normal routine again. It's a bit easier now as at least she can meet her friends in the park etc but I won't miss the permanent moodiness 🤣.

@FrugiFan exactly like me. You've also just reminded me that I could do with some more peanut butter 🤣. My daughter and I love smooth peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches 😋. Thought it would be weird but the Americans have it right.
