My hairdresser will be wearing a mask for my appointment. She will insist that I wear a mask and apply hand sanitiser when I arrive.

She will see maybe 6 clients per day, all of whom are sensible adults. If she has any reservations whatsoever, she will turn a client away.

I, on the other hand, will be in contact with up to 150 teenagers per day in my classroom, many more in the corridors, not all of whom are sensible.

@Bewareoftheblob

How about...

We go back to school as normal in September.

We make sure students can wash/sanitize their hands as they enter/exit a room.

We make students wear face coverings.

We make them face the front of the room. We stay at the front of the room.

We try to avoid passing loads of stuff around and sharing equipment.

We accept that social distancing is impossible in school or on school buses, and we thank god that young people are unlikely to get ill.

Teachers who are truly scared that they will get Covid and die will have to get a sick note for their health anxiety or resign.

We crack on with the business at hand.

Boom. Absolutely spot on!
Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 02/07/2020 18:32

Do you think those same guidelines are in place for hairdressers?

Loads of regulations in place for hairdressers - stylist and customer to wear masks, one customer in the salon at a time, everything disinfected between clients, gown, towels etc all washed between each customer.

My physio is insisting on pre visit questionnaire, temperature check, patient in mask and physio in PPE, all surfaces disinfected between patients, no toilet, cash not accepted, only one patient in surgery at a time.

Why are schools such outliers?

donquixotedelamancha · 02/07/2020 18:32

Do you think those same guidelines are in place for hairdressers?

Yes. All businesses have quite strict guidelines. Hairdressers are generally using screens and PPE for staff to get around the proximity issue.

The hairdresser isnt up in your face looking in your mouth. Thats why they need the PPE.

If it were just about that then only surgical staff would be required to follow those rules. Most dental treatment will require ICU level PPE for the reasons you say but those are the practice requirements.

Dental surgeries are know places where flus are spread. You know where is worse? Schools.

Schools have less protection in place than pubs and shops FFS.

Why would anyone argue against masks and temperature checks for schools?

Are you serious/ You are not allowed to wear PPE? That's disgraceful!

Yup, the government and some parents on here think that it will scare the children.

I can only think that the other children from around the world are much more resilient.

In close contact? That close for more than 15 mins max (genuine question)

i like it

pooiepooie25 · 02/07/2020 18:34

@TrustTheGeneGenie

I have zero respect for those who think that teachers should go back to schools without the protections in place afforded to everyone else

What protections are afforded to everyone else?

Are you actually serious or just stupid? How about social distancing, masks and screens?
MarshaBradyo · 02/07/2020 18:35

I agree it’s crazy to deny the option of PPE, children would be fine. They are fine elsewhere with it.

maudesid · 02/07/2020 18:37

@C33PO not sure if anyone has already replied but I work in a nursery and we have been told today to scrap bubbles entirely from the 20th July

suchclearwater · 02/07/2020 18:37

FrippEnos

It's totally shit. Why on earth would they not give you PPE? It is utterly ridiculous and undermining. to say the least. Bloody hell.

veryvery · 02/07/2020 18:37

What I don't get is how absences and fines will work with plenty of pupils having to take time off because of test and trace.

And also how a school will be able to run with so many potential absences.

Has anyone argued against that? I havent. I think its a good idea (a little solution maybe). Maybe people are less concerned because they know kids less likely to spread it? Back in the 80s dentists didnt even wear gloves or masks (and there was HIV to worry about too!) - surely if schools have been open the whole time (and most teachers on here say theyve worked full time the whole time) during the peak it will be less of a risk come September?
netflixismysidehustle · 02/07/2020 18:38

School classrooms and corridors are more crowded than soft play and leisure centres ime and they aren't open yet.

user1471530109 · 02/07/2020 18:38

tuck I'd you've read the thread you would see I was responding to palace. Hence her name being at the start of my post. I haven't once implied teachers and kids should have n95 masks or whatever. But the same face coverings that are mandatory on public transport maybe?

What other group of people will be expected to mix with 200-300 people a day and not take SD or PPE measures?

Palace patients are expected to wear face coverings in waiting room etc. I thought that part was obvious, sorry.

You still haven't answered why you think teaching staff and kids don't deserve to be given PPE? I'm part talking about secondary age students here. The kids most at risk of being ill and the ones who will be exposed to much higher numbers of potential cases.

HipTightOnions · 02/07/2020 18:39

close contact? That close

I’m not touching their hair, obviously.

But often sitting next to them. That is obviously expected to stop, and we’ll be trying to teach solely from the front of the class. Where I’ll be within 1m of 1 or 2 of the 8 students at the front of the class at all times.

When did I say they "didnt deserve to be given PPE??" if its scientifically proven they need it, they should have it.
netflixismysidehustle · 02/07/2020 18:40

I guess they could have more double lessons in secondary? Probably not for the y7s but changing classroom 3 rather than 6 times will help

Again though there could be things in place for that? side by side is safer than head on - perspex screens to the side of desks maybe so you could walk round? A perspex screen at the front? Solutions?
suchclearwater · 02/07/2020 18:42

I am still at a loss as to why teachers are not given PPE?! WTF?

user1471530109 · 02/07/2020 18:43

The government guidance states that if SD can't be maintained in an enclosed area, PPE should be worn.

I'm assuming that was based on scientific data? So why is that not being followed here?

GhostTypeEevee · 02/07/2020 18:43

I just asked ds what changing classrooms is like after lessons and he said he's like the ball in a pinball machine bouncing off people

there are several classrooms in my schools that just fits 20 pupils, shoulder to shoulder, with little room to move around the classroom.

I would be within 2m of 75% of the class at all times.

In another room I would be within 1m of 5 pupils at all times.

user1471530109 · 02/07/2020 18:44

There are no perspex screens or PPE mentioned in the guidance except to say it is not necessary.

Can you not see why we are a little bit pissed off?!
