So it's a start. So that means it's an improvement. So if you want to wear them then wear them.
I don't get it

user1471530109 · 02/07/2020 17:39

Hashtag! We have to have permission to wear them! Some Heads, will take the guidance as gospel and won't allow staff to wear them. I'm not sure why you keep asking the same question?

hashtagbollocks · 02/07/2020 17:42

I'm not sure why you keep asking the same question
because i refuse to believe a HT would take the risk of NOT allowing a member of staff to wear PPE if they were insisting on it.

You can refuse to believe it if that makes you feel better.

It doesn’t make it true.

ListeningQuietly · 02/07/2020 17:48

Well as it is 2 months away I would suggest we wait to see where we are closer to the time ?
Sod that
they closed the schools in March
the time to start planning how to bring them back was April
not July

What is currently proposed is not physically possible
and there is the education of seven million children at stake

Refuse to believe if you want, but don't spread rubbish saying that we can wear it when we can't.

The government doesn't care, they are just trying to appease the loudest voice.

mrpumblechook · 02/07/2020 17:57

I'm relieved that they are going back. I think that they should wear PPE at secondary schools, at least to begin with though.

EveleftEden · 02/07/2020 18:05

My two are really excited to be going back. They’ve really started to struggle the last three weeks. I’m relieved they are opening up.

However I think the government should allow parents to choose if they want to send their kids in. They and the media put the fear of god in to everyone so it’s not surprising some people are still terrified. You can’t more or less say ‘we’re all going to die!’ Then say ‘actually we’re not!- every one back to school and work!’

ListeningQuietly · 02/07/2020 18:09

Absolutely not
Some of the most vulnerable children are being kept off school by dysfunctional families.
A teacher friend has been doing home visits right through lockdown and requesting to see each child with their sleeves pulled up - to check for bruises.
The children who most need the support of school
have been been getting no home education at all
for months

palacegirl77 · 02/07/2020 18:11

@user1471530109 I own a dental laboratory. My profession hasnt done anything specific to minimise my risk. We've taking a massive loan to find our own solutions and to top up our staff wages to full pay whilst theyre sadly furloughed and we have no income coming in. Weve also donated numerous items of PPE to our daughters school, along with 30 massive bottles of hand sanitiser. But thanks for being judgy. Im only pointing out that sometimes a bit of creativity and positive thinking can come up with workable solutions like they have in Wales. Youre right, im not a teacher so I wont comment anymore if you dont think I should.

palacegirl77 · 02/07/2020 18:12

@Messageinateacup

Palace girl where did you get the idea that teachers worked one week out of three in lockdown? I have worked every day I'm paid to and many others unpaid. I'm not worried about public support. Don't think we've had that for a long time.
Thats the rota that was set up in my daughters primary school prior to bubbles. My Y6 daughter has gone back for 2 days a week. She has 2 teachers in her bubble, the other 3 days a week they are not in school.

Why haven't dental surgeries been running then? Surely all it needs is a can do attitude and some blue sky thinking to problem solve?

Yes funny enough the private ones are open and running. The work we are doing for them now wont be paid until August. The NHS ones are barely open though...but then again theyre still being paid in full so have no incentive to. Funny how the ones that need the income have come up with ways of working safely but the ones that get paid anyway havent?
suchclearwater · 02/07/2020 18:19

allFrippEnos

Are you serious/ You are not allowed to wear PPE? That's disgraceful!

donquixotedelamancha · 02/07/2020 18:21

Why haven't dental surgeries been running then?

Because labs are incredibly easy places to socially distance, keep clean and work in small groups.

Practices are temperature testing at the door, staff are behind screens, patients wearing masks and staff have to change in a designated area when they arrive and still they are not allowed to drill or asperate with these precautions.

This is required by law because of the high number of patients (16 per day at mine) in close proximity to staff cause a high risk of spreading.

What have schools got: bubbles of up to 200 kids in a year group.

AldiAisleofCrap · 02/07/2020 18:22

I really hope that’s not true, it’s an abuse of power and absolutely not what teachers should be doing either in school or lockdown.

user1471530109 · 02/07/2020 18:23

palace my local NHS dental practice is open and has PPE and expects all patients to be wearing PPE. My own routine appt was cancelled and only emergency appt are being booked.

So. Clear and expected response with PPE for all involved. Minimise the risk for all involved.

I'm really not sure why you are arguing that teaching staff and kids don't deserve that?

And so we are clear. My dd is back in school from next week. I am not keeping her off as I agree her mental health and wellbeing is incredibly important. However, her class bubble is 9 kids (v small school) and her teacher will remain with her bubble the whole time.

I just feel all the way through this thread you have tried to make out we are shirking our responsibilities and we don't give a shit about the kids (you have implied this not said it). That other keyworkers have had to get on with it etc. But all we want is some protection and not to be put unnecessarily at risk. I'm really happy to be in the classroom- I just want to not be collateral damage which could so easily be avoided.

It's all down to cost. They know that if they make it mandatory for kids/staff to wear PPE, there will be some people that expect the government to pay for it. And they have obviously decided that's not worth it.

Do you think those same guidelines are in place for hairdressers? Precisely the same in terms of numbers and proximity (but actually for longer than being near a dentist) but the difference? The hairdresser isnt up in your face looking in your mouth. Thats why they need the PPE. Im pretty sure teachers dont get that close to the students for 15 mins plus?? Id hope not anyway!

So teachers are not responsible for checking for signs of abuse in children known to social services

TuckMyWin · 02/07/2020 18:26

So, let me get this straight, you're upset that teachers aren't being allowed the same level of PPE as dentists?

Be dead interested to see how your dental surgery is treating patients that are wearing PPE - how do they see their teeth through the masks?

Im not saying youre shirking anything, Im saying a bit of perspective of risk compared to other areas in needed, Plus lets see what the situation is come September. And lets see some "superheads" coming up wit some "super ideas!"

AldiAisleofCrap · 02/07/2020 18:29

So teachers are not responsible for checking for signs of abuse in children known to social services
If a child is in school and they have reason to believe that child has been hurt then yes it’s appropriate to check. It’s not appropriate to regularly check the arms of vulnerable children on the off chance especially in their homes. If that’s necessary they will be on a child protection plan and child services will be checking on the children.

Bewareoftheblob · 02/07/2020 18:30

How about...

We go back to school as normal in September.

We make sure students can wash/sanitize their hands as they enter/exit a room.

We make students wear face coverings.

We make them face the front of the room. We stay at the front of the room.

We try to avoid passing loads of stuff around and sharing equipment.

We accept that social distancing is impossible in school or on school buses, and we thank god that young people are unlikely to get ill.

Teachers who are truly scared that they will get Covid and die will have to get a sick note for their health anxiety or resign.

We crack on with the business at hand.

netflixismysidehustle · 02/07/2020 18:30

I'm sure that the teachers looking for bruises have more subtlety than to ask directly. Something like they roll up sleeves and say "look at my tan " hoping that child will copy and do the same.
