Why don't we make masks compulsory for shops too?

It'd be a minor inconvenience...

And we could have the same exemptions as for public transport...

But surely it would be preferable to a 2nd lockdown...

They have done this in Germany...

Many years ago before kids I worked in retail - area manager etc so still talk too many in the job and they have said sales are scarily low and hardly anyone is visiting stores.

Well yes, obviously not every single person in the country is in a shop right now, but shops looked pretty busy filled with the people who were there.
Odd that all the retailers’ takings are down and online business is booming then.

I haven't been wearing a mask yet to do my weekly shop as supermarkets are big but I have to say I'd feel more comfortable going in to non essential smaller shops if everyone was wearing a mask (unless they have valid reasons not to of course) so I'm another where it would have the opposite effect with. Shops would get more money from me.

When I've been in shops, people seem to feel that wearing a mask means they can do what they want. I had one woman in a mask push past me to get a loaf of bread, I could feel her breath through the mask on my cheek. Those not wearing them seemed to take much more care to keep their distance

making masks compulsory in shops will mean fewer shoppers - of that I am 100% certain

That’s happening in places that don’t have mandatory masks too. It’s not something that started happening as soon as masks came in.

You’ve got to be kidding!! Our takings are almost DOUBLE this time last year ( large diy/garden retailer)

Shelves empty but stock starting to come in quickly now. We can’t keep up!

Our online proposition is ok but we find people come in store to makes purchases for garden decor and larger projects

That’s one retailer. Others have seen massive drops in bricks and mortar and rises in online.

I’ll be going back to food shops for the first time since March because masks are being made compulsory. Can’t wait to choose my own food.
Certain stubborn people may start out with the intention of not going if it means they’ll have to wear a face covering but they’ll soon realise it really is no fun having to rely on deliveries.
