Why don't we make masks compulsory for shops too?

It'd be a minor inconvenience...

And we could have the same exemptions as for public transport...

But surely it would be preferable to a 2nd lockdown...

They have done this in Germany...

Johnson spotted wearing one for the first time.

Stricter rules may be coming.

Why don't we make masks compulsory for shops too?
wanderings · 10/07/2020 19:16

If it's made compulsory, I will be voting with my wallet; take note, Rishi, if you want us in the shops.

Llamazoom · 10/07/2020 20:17

They did mention stricter rules regarding masks in shops, I will be wearing one and it doesn’t bother me at all. If it puts people off going to the shops then that means shorter queues.

rosie39forever · 10/07/2020 20:40

If someone working in an ICU can manage to wear one for an 8hr shift, I think it's a bit pathetic that people are moaning about wearing one for a short time in a shop, if it means it's going to help us get back to normal quicker then why the hell wouldn't you.

HeIenaDove · 10/07/2020 20:46

As there are many women who cant wear them due to being suffocated as part of domestic abuse , sexual attacks, rape it might be an idea for Womens Aid and other related agencies to put out a statement of some kind.

Especially as so many members of the public are completely incapable of critical thinking.

Llamazoom · 10/07/2020 23:03

@rosie39forever agree, my mother has COPD and has emerged from hibernation, she has no problems wearing a mask to nip round the supermarket. It’s like the lockdown threads all over again, I can’t do this because........

PickAChew · 10/07/2020 23:13

The stakes are somewhat higher for a surgeon carrying out an operation compared with someone filling their freezer in Sainsburys.

Smileyoriley · 11/07/2020 07:54

I will be more inclined to shop rather than less if masks become compulsory.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/07/2020 07:59

No way will I shop with a mask on

Online it is for me

rosie39forever · 11/07/2020 08:53

I’m fed up of hearing people moaning about how terrible and unessessary the lockdown is and how they just want to get back to normal but many of these same people won’t make a simple adjustment like wearing a face covering in an enclosed space. It isn’t complicated, the more we take responsibility for ourselves and others, the quicker the virus is suppressed and we return to normal.

No, my elderly father had an Angina attack today because the store was too hot and he couldn't breathe through his mask. It should never be compulsory to wear one

I agree. I already wear a mask in shops. Can't believe other people don't! I want to get a mask with 'this is for your benefit!' printed on it.

I want one with 'THIS MASK IS USELESS'

@Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree Tue 30-Jun-20 17:27:52
I agree. It’s a small price to pay for getting back some sense of normality.

What is ‘normal’ about wearing a mask?

@Jayfee Tue 30-Jun-20 17:37:54
I am protecting you by wearing a mask, please do the same for me!

FFS Someone please protect me from the terminally patronising.

@flowerycurtain Tue 30-Jun-20 17:38:25

Even if it has no medical benefit it has a tangible impact on people's awareness.

No it doesn’t – it makes people feel invincible, then they fiddle with and adjust their mask, followed by touching other things and spreading any germs they have – which are unlikely to be CV

@cologne4711 Tue 30-Jun-20 18:08:59
but given the stats say that if everyone wears one the chances of transmission drop by 70%, that seems like a good reason to wear one.

70% chance of nothing (pretty much) is still NOTHING

@SockYarn Tue 30-Jun-20 19:22:32
No thanks.
The virus spreads in confined spaces when you are face to face with a person at distances of less than a metre (or two, depending on who you believe).
Me walking past you in a supermarket, bookstore or clothes shop isn't going to be sufficient contact to give you Covid19, even if I have it and am unaware I have it. I'd have to pin you up against the baked beans and cough all over your face.

YYY

@thesedaysarescary Tue 30-Jun-20 19:29:31
I work in retail the majority of people who come in wearing mask and gloves constantly adjust their masks and touch their faces, half of them don't even have them over their noses 😂 while I understand people's desire to feel safer I don't see that they make much difference if people won't use them correctly.

YYY – except for many it is just about demonstrating their believed ‘superiority’ over people who actually think for themselves. Or even worse, believe the virus decides who to infect depending on how virtuous they are

@heyheyho Tue 30-Jun-20 19:31:25
They don’t work because people don’t use them properly. Also, you won’t catch it walking past someone

Very True - And you definitely can’t catch it from the 3999 people out of 4000 that don’t have it.

@LilBlackLab Tue 30-Jun-20 22:42:40
how long is a mask effective for?

Mostly it isn’t – but if you have a clean mask, correctly put on then it is effective until you touch it. Then it’s not

@rosie39forever Sat 11-Jul-20 08:53:42
It isn’t complicated, the more we take responsibility for ourselves and others, the quicker the virus is suppressed and we return to normal.

Patronising twaddle – nothing normal about wearing a facemask – not complicated to find evidence that they are useless unless worn correctly, not touched and changed frequently. And the virus is here to stay, no more dangerous to most in the future than any other virus or bacteria

IAintentDead · 11/07/2020 22:35

Boris loves a climate of fear and ...

LilBlackLab · 11/07/2020 22:38

the store i work in is like a greenhouse most of the time. its going to be horrific with a mask

shoplifters are having fun tho!

rosie39forever · 11/07/2020 23:29

@IAintentDead I didn’t say there was anything normal about wearing a mask, far from it, I said if wearing a face covering helps us to get back to normality than that’s what we should do. Obviously some people will be exempt for medical reasons.

Itsarattrap · 11/07/2020 23:32

We will. We’re usually a few weeks behind the rest of the world.

So apparently masks weren't effective a few months ago but are now, when the virus is going down,it doesn't make sense.

And people listening to the who the advice has changed so many times.

You could argue it's a new illness but it's a old type so they know how it spreads so why now.

Daisychains20 · 13/07/2020 10:30

Shops are struggling no one is shopping, by bringing in compulsory masks it will make more people keep away which the economy can not afford to do.

rosie39forever · 13/07/2020 11:25

@Daisychains20 it'll have the opposite effect for me, if masks are mandatory then I'll feel safer and have the confidence to shop more.

Alsohuman · 13/07/2020 11:37

Even if it has no medical benefit it has a tangible impact on people's awareness

I think it’s quite the reverse. Mask wearers here seem to think they’re invincible and don’t need to social distance. The majority of people don’t wear them and take great care to keep away from other people.

GoldenOmber · 13/07/2020 12:04

@Daisychains20

We have to wear masks in shops where I live and people aren’t keeping away.
Alsohuman · 13/07/2020 12:29

I bet they are. If they’re at home you can’t see them, can you?

GoldenOmber · 13/07/2020 13:33

Well yes, obviously not every single person in the country is in a shop right now, but shops looked pretty busy filled with the people who were there.
