Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

So the Government are acknowledging that children carry the virus and can infect people. Yet they want schools back to normal in September.
Dream on.
So school bus drivers, dinner ladies, TA’s , cleaners, admin staff and Teachers are supposed to do their job and take one for the team ...without social distancing or PPE.
We are all being lied to .

Saladmakesmesad · 29/06/2020 21:48

Wonder why schools are closing? They are safe places are they not?

Completely safe. Adults working in them don't even need PPE and children who crowd together and pick their noses and cough on people for fun don't ever spread disease.

pandafunfactory · 29/06/2020 21:49

Poor business people of Leicester. This will break some of them. It would be nice if the government and public health could just be honest about the outbreak. It's all about ethnicity, faith and overseas travel. Failure to be explicit about those factors is dishonest.

GoingBackTo505 · 29/06/2020 21:49

I'm in Leicestershire and really need more info than what we were just given. Will it be schools AND nurseries closing? Is it Leicester city and just the three surrounding areas he mentioned going back into the tighter lockdown? Where can we get more info?! I'm not sure I can take this much longer.

CallmeAngelina · 29/06/2020 21:50

@whacks493

This is a joke, I presume?
Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 21:50

I'd quite like some reassurance on how they're going to police this. We live in a neighbouring county. How are they going to stop people traveling out of the locked down areas ...

I'm also in a neighbouring county, and short of creating roadblocks the simple answer is that they can't

What do you want them to be honest about? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
TheFairyCaravan · 29/06/2020 21:54

Exactly so there's absolutely no point in doing this.

People are on Fb already saying they're not going to comply with it.

BlueBrian · 29/06/2020 21:56

Waste of time, all that will happen is the people in Leicester will just spread it to a wider area, won't be long before the whole country is locked down again.

Keepdistance · 29/06/2020 21:58

They are shutting shops but it's probably not them that have spread it and why wait till Thursday for the schools?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/06/2020 22:00

@GoingBackTo505 I'd assume a 5 mile perimeter around the city boundary if they're including birstall and Oadby but waiting for the map to say for sure.

I think they'll need to put spot checks in on the entries to M1/M69 as well as intermittently on A6 and A46 to make sure travel is 'essential' otherwise everyone will be popping out to county pubs and restaurants come Saturday.

danni0509 · 29/06/2020 22:00

@BlueBrian my thoughts exactly.

They can travel and get a pint and a hair cut!

whacks493 · 29/06/2020 22:01

@CallmeAngelina more sarcastic rather then a joke.

I can’t understand People believing that kids can not transmit corona virus or believe the government when they say it.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/06/2020 22:01

@Keepdistance loads of people have been unfurloughed with non essential shops opening and pubs etc. They need a couple of days to try to find childcare, they did the same at start of lockdown, gave a couple of days notice.

Redolent · 29/06/2020 22:03

But this really illustrates why we can’t just ‘live with the virus’ by continuing to let it circulate. Lockdowns, even at a local level, are incredibly damaging. Closing and reopening businesses is not sustainable. Stock will have been ordered, plans made. Pubs, had they reopened, would have built up their inventories, all for nothing.

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 22:03

My life and that of so many people I care about has been turned upside down.

It's frustrating that we have been told this at 9pm. My husband's job store OSM to in serious jeopardy and his team have all left work equipment in store which they now need to collect so they can wfh. If the announcement had been 3 hours earlier this would not have been necessary, they could have collected kit, reset safes, alarm systems etc etc..

Something must have gone awry to make such an announcement at 9pm, it's too late for businesses, schools, dentists etc etc to make contingency plans.

I live 10 miles outside Leicester. I'm not worried about people travelling here. Why would they? Maybe for some fresh air or to visit a shop but if we all keep our distance and wash hands etc it will minimise any issues.

pandafunfactory · 29/06/2020 22:03

I would like the government to be honest about how the virus is spreading. Do we seriously think it's Primark and a few more kids at school that's the issue?
The one size fits all approach is a disaster. What's needed is a specific approach geared towards the communities with highest spread. All that a blanket lockdown is going to do is cause further alienation in the community. North Evington is a majority Asian area. Do you think Matt Hancock in Parliament is an effective voice to address concerns in that community?

woodhill · 29/06/2020 22:06

"Poor business people of Leicester. This will break some of them. It would be nice if the government and public health could just be honest about the outbreak. It's all about ethnicity, faith and overseas travel. Failure to be explicit about those factors is dishonest".

Yes it is awful but a shame some residents did keep their businesses open when they weren't meant to so unfortunately you reap what you sow but it has spilled out to spoil it for the law abiding residents

Alex50 · 29/06/2020 22:09

I wonder what happened for the government not to announce this until 9pm? I wonder if they know the exact cause of the spike but are not saying yet?

Redolent · 29/06/2020 22:12

Cases normally continue to rise and take 2-3 weeks to plateau after restrictions are imposed...will be interesting to see if they timed this right.

SistemaAddict · 29/06/2020 22:12

How long is the extension for?

I feel like we will never be out of on and off lockdowns or some limits on things. I think things have reopened too soon and too many at once. I'm shielded and haven't been anywhere for 15 weeks now except for a walk on Saturday with ds. One walk in 15 weeks. It worries me that l be shielded for the foreseeable at this rate.

What has happened to cause the cases to rise so much in Leicester? What makes Leicester different? I don't know the city so don't know anything about it compared to any other so I'm interested to know why Leicester.

Unescorted · 29/06/2020 22:13

The Telegraph is saying High Peak & Staff Moorlands are also going to have an extended lockdown.

Whoknowswhocares · 29/06/2020 22:13

So anyone who wants to shop from Leicester or go to the pub will simply travel out of that area to a neighbouring one.Or arrange their ‘street party’ elsewhere. Or visit the beach miles away etc with no one to stop them?
Yeah right, that’s going to help then!

Autumnwalksx · 29/06/2020 22:14

I swear I read earlier Boris will fine parents who don't send their kids back in September. But clearly it's spreading in schools. I don't see how this winter is going to be even possible. Coughs, colds, flu, coronavirus. Kids under 7 will never be there.

Schools should shut for summer now based on this. We've not come this far to let our kids catch it at school

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 22:15

@Bercows if you have a look through the thread you may get some ideas as to the possible causes.....
