No news on gyms opening

Anyone else feeling a bit deflated that there is no news on when gyms are going to reopen.

Before anyone says exercise outside like walking and cycling, I already do those but I still miss th weight machines and swimming.

I know alot can be done at home but since spend quite alot of time in the house from working I just want my gym to go exercise in, a different building and environment.

Ours is wonderful immaculate and the staff are always wonderful. We love going. Just not happy with how the powers that be have done this. And then taking money. They also have not refunded the money from when they closed. We could choose something else or donate

I feel the same about David Lloyd. I also wasn't happy about their email stating what they would do to make the gym or classes safe but nothing about the swimming pool e.g. if they would reduce numbers and allow entry without going through changing rooms etc. I can't cancel my membership for a few months if they open and they will probably charge the usual high membership fee if open despite reduced facilities so I am happy that they can't open yet.

There is no reason for outdoor pools to be missing the best part of their season.

Swimming is often the best disability friendly exercise. So many people can only exercise effectively in the water.

Chlorine kills the virus, that was known early on and Swim England seems to have decent guidelines to minimise contact in changing areas.
My DCs have awkwardly timed lessons. While its summer, we can manage the timing gap outside the building... not so doable on a drizzly 5oC night in November.

Surface cleaning in gyms is relatively easy to manage, the greater problem is potential for viral speead in the air and there will be a huge variation in the ventilation of different venues.

The health benefits of opening exercise venues will outweigh the potential for viral spread at this point.

For bored walkers/ runners, I'm pausing regularly on my runs and doing an exercise, taking a resitance band with me and using things like fences. It gets some variation in without feeling bored and sweaty in my lounge.

mrpumblechook · 25/06/2020 11:29

Before Lockdown I swam 4 to 5 miles a week in an outdoor pool
NOTHING can replace that level of cardio and vitamin D

Really? I do that and I didn't think I was particularly fit. DH runs and is a lot fitter.

There is a reason if they have to be accessed via changing rooms.

ListeningQuietly · 25/06/2020 11:39

pumble
For those like me who cannot run, yes swimming is irreplaceable

and I have ZERO worries about the changing rooms.

I do not intend to gob on people
I do not intend to let people gob on me

transmission via surfaces is utterly minimal so long as you keep your hands out of your face

ListeningQuietly · 25/06/2020 11:40

And the ones that do not - like Charlton Lido or Petersfield pool or the many, many other Lidos
what is stopping them opening ?

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 25/06/2020 11:54

I used to swim 2-3 k everyday. I now have swimming dreams where I've forgotten how to swim.
There's no way swimming pools and their changing rooms are more dangerous than pubs or being on a train or bus. Everything's usually drenched in chlorine anyway and involves a lot of washing before and after. My swimming pool is in my gym and there's no way they'd open just the pool. But I'm in Scotland and I'm really on board with the whole cautious approach so we only have to do this once if we can, so I suppose I can wait another month or 2. Makes no difference I doubt if I could swim the length of myself now.

mrpumblechook · 25/06/2020 11:58

I can't run either so swimming is irreplaceable for me. I thought you were saying that in general nothing can replace swimming 4 or 5 miles a week for cardio when I think for most people it can. At the moment I'm using a cross trainer for cardio for example.

I do not intend to gob on people
I do not intend to let people gob on me

Unfortunately it's a bit more infectious than that and avoiding gob is not all that is required. There certainly wouldn't be millions of people infected already if it was only transmitted via gobbling.

Yes, they should open although they may have to limit the number of people going in. They originally said people could swim outside though it's a bit odd that they have changed this .The pool I go to can only be accessed via changing rooms and showers so I would want to avoid.

Piffle.
It is transmitted by droplets of spit and sneeze and cough
the exact definition of gobbing on people

It's not the exact definition of gobbing at all. Coronavirus can be transmitted by tiny particles far less than involved with "gobbing" i.e spitting at people. People don't even need to have symptoms to transmit it if infected.

@BigChocFrenzy

I'm surprised about the delay in gyms

Here in Germany, gyms opened on 16 May, before pubs and restaurants could even open outdoors
I'm an (almost 64-yr-old) gym rat so I'm in 5-6 days per week

So far no outbreaks in gyms here - but several in slaughterhouses and churches

To enable SD (was always 1.5m here):

There are strict limits on class numbers,
some weight benches have been taped off
machines moved around
initially no showers or sauna, but they reopened too

The staff at check-in wear masks
However, no perspex screens / dividers anywhere !

There is deep cleaning every night.
Sanitiser everywhere

Totally agree.

But the UK government believes pubs and restaurants are more important than health and fitness ☹️

wowfudge · 25/06/2020 12:47

You can't go to the pub online though can you? I think it's barking and you won't see me in a pub or bar anytime soon. The use of perspex screens in gyms is by no means seen as a good idea. They would quickly get filthy and be something else that needed cleaning regularly - this was mentioned in a report on the 10 o'clock news last night.

My gym - small classes you have to book for - has provided an app and online classes within a week of closing. Workouts for those with some kit and those with none. It's worked well for me and I'm happy to carry on with that.

To be fair, you can't swim online either. The difference for me between pubs and gyms/swimming pools is that I don't have to pay for the pub if I choose not to go there. The gym will usually charge anyway and whilst I'm sure that isn't a factor in the decision to keep gyms closed I'm glad they are.

wowfudge · 25/06/2020 13:01

I think a huge part of opening pubs etc is not only for economic reasons, but to counteract boredom and lockdown fatigue.

B1rdbra1n · 25/06/2020 13:02

Believes pubs and restaurants are more important
I think it's more that pubs and restaurants are a better way to placate the public.... bread and circuses/populism etc🙄

Midrangecolours · 25/06/2020 13:38

Give me a swimming pool any day over a pub, insane

Mascotte · 25/06/2020 15:29

I'm excited to go to the pub for a nice drink with actual people! And a meal out.. will be so nice.

Deelish75 · 25/06/2020 16:28

Yes!!
minipie · 25/06/2020 16:52

It seems I need to be shouted at by an instructor in the same room to actually do any exercise.

Yes same here. I’d just started going to the gym regularly and getting vaguely fit, after years of no exercise, when this happened. I did try some online classes but I’m also homeschooling two young children and exercise just kept getting pushed off the end of the to do list.

SpokeTooSoon · 25/06/2020 18:54

Well, I heard on radio 4 of someone doing zoom driving lessons so you can bet someone out there is offering online swimming! Depends on the size of your paddling pool I guess. Grin

cyclingmad · 25/06/2020 19:16

uff with the scenes at the beaches today - open the gyms up!

As would opening swimming pools and leisure centres. There's only so many fitness videos I can motivate myself for.
Whereas Zoom and a bottle of wine has been a great replacement for the pub.

TeamRick · 25/06/2020 21:20

I'm loving Zoom glasses run by my pilates instructor. Done kettlebell glasses Pilates & functional core throughout lockdown!

I don't want the hassle of going back to the studio, driving in the traffic, finding a parking space, I just wander off to the utility room through my mat on the floor and stagger back out 45 mins later!

cyclingmad · 25/06/2020 21:52

They spray those antiviral sprays on buses and tubes right, supposed to last 30 days, why cant they spray the gym....
