Anyone else feeling a bit deflated that there is no news on when gyms are going to reopen.

Before anyone says exercise outside like walking and cycling, I already do those but I still miss th weight machines and swimming.

I know alot can be done at home but since spend quite alot of time in the house from working I just want my gym to go exercise in, a different building and environment.

Yes I'm a bit gutted too. More for the swimming than the gym.

I'm happy that pubs and restaurants can reopen if it bring people enjoyment.

But honestly, from a health point of view I'd would really like to see gyms and swimming open up.

Lyricallie · 23/06/2020 15:42

I'm in Scotland so unfortunately doesn't affect me anyway but I've been following with interest as we are a couple of weeks behind you. I miss the gym so much. It was wear I socialised and I live in the Highlands the wind and rain are so often here can't really exercise outside. Have been doing online zoom classes but I really want the weights machines. I was doing weights PT just before this all kicked off so I'm gutted I've lost all that hard work!

Joy GrinGrin

Also missing weights as I've lost so much strength and muscles meaning I've had a few minor niggles with my back/hams/hips whilst continuing running (same frequency and distance as pre lockdown). At home training just doesn't cut it.

cyclingmad · 23/06/2020 16:06

My gym is in walking distance I always wore my gym clothes to the gym and back and showered at home rather than lug everything with me. Same with swimming, put joggers and hoodie over swimwear then stripped off in changing room, after I quickly dried off stuck on hoodie and joggers and went home to shower.

@Rainbow12e that sounds more promising at least a date is now mentioned rather than nothing

I'd be quite happy to change in the car park if it meant I got to go swimming!

ListeningQuietly · 23/06/2020 16:36

So its OK for people to get pissed and over eat in large groups
but not exercise
Hmm

Isitreally77 · 23/06/2020 16:51

I also miss the gym and my instructor, I don't have the space at home to do home workouts and doing them in the communal garden isn't suitable. I'm not built for running (my boobs are too big for that), I know some personal trainers are doing sessions outside but I can't afford personal training. It's a shame but I'm still holding hope for the end of July.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/06/2020 16:56

It's the Council pools I worry about, since many of them will delay and have meetings about meetings until hell freezes over

Ditto libraries; I believe Boris included these on the list of things which could open, but good luck expecting LAs to get their arses into gear to actually do it

CaptainBrickbeard · 23/06/2020 17:02

I’d drive home in a wet swimsuit; I don’t care about the showers or changing rooms, I just want to swim. All the announcements today are meaningless to me; my children still can’t go back to school and I can’t go swimming and those are the only things I care about now. Pubs must be a million times more dangerous than pools.

profpoopsnagle · 23/06/2020 17:05

Yep, another one who wants a swim. We can't swim in a vat of chlorine but can sit at a table in a pub....

VioletCharlotte · 23/06/2020 17:27

@Rainbow12e
Mid July sounds promising. Can I ask where you saw that? Really hoping it's true!

Vinorosso74 · 23/06/2020 17:35

I don't get how they can't reopen gyms while pubs and restaurants can open. I wonder which sector pays more to the government.....

Thanks - at last a potential date! I really hope they do

Thanks. Really hope it's 18 July!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/06/2020 20:48

Absolutely delighted as it means I don't have to come up with more excuses not to use the membership I wasted money on! Unfortunately it's being extended to take into account the time it's been closed so I'll have to think of something else!

In all seriousness, as much as I hate the gym it is one of the last places I'd want to go because of all the sweaty, heavy breathing people touching equipment. It's bad enough without a pandemic but at the moment I definitely wouldn't risk it.

Stellakent · 23/06/2020 20:54

I'd love to go swimming and would happily go and come back with my costume under my clothes.

I don't think gyms can be compared to pubs. If I go to the pub it'll be with my DH and maybe a couple of friends and we can sit at a table on our own. In the gym people are moving between equipment, breathing heavily and sometimes dripping sweat. My gym is very busy and most of the machines and weights are always in use and classes are packed.

I think they'll open soon but it requires some more planning. If they have to operate at reduced capacity I'll probably cancel my membership as it's difficult enough as it is to book in to classes.

ListeningQuietly · 23/06/2020 21:03

German gyms have been open for a month just fine

the UK is going Zig when all sane countries are going Zag

TabbyStar · 23/06/2020 21:13

I'm really missing swimming in the outdoor pool, but as I've lost 75% of my income I probably can't afford membership anymore, so I feel mixed about it! Hoping to get in the sea this week though.

MrsWhites · 24/06/2020 08:08

Much easier to social distance at a fitness class or in a swimming pool than in a bloody pub! But of course fitness doesn’t bring as much money into the economy than pubs and bars!

Blobby10 · 24/06/2020 09:23

@ListeningQuietly that's exactly what I said when I heard that gyms weren't going to be open!

My gym is a 24 hour one and I go at 5am - there are usually a dozen of us there between 5 and 6am and its a big place. We could all easily social distance (whatever the current 'safe' measurement is!) and all wiped down equipment anyway although I'm not so sure about the dumbbells and barbells!!. Not all gyms are overcrowded sweaty cesspits of infection! Wish they could open - I need some weight bearing exercises to complement my cycling!

Kazzyhoward · 24/06/2020 09:58

So its OK for people to get pissed and over eat in large groups
but not exercise

There's no comparison. You aren't sweating/dripping over your pint in the same way that you are over your gym equipment. Not to mention all the airborne particles from your breath expelled during vigourous exercise that will be all over the gym.

IF people bothered to properly clean the equipment after they've used it and IF the gyms had plenty of fresh air, then maybe they'd be able to open. But despite providing cloths/bottles of spray in every area, few of the people in gyms I used to go to made any effort at all to wipe them down after use.

People need to start behaving responsibly and following rules if they want to get back to going to places like gyms which are high risk.
