Anyone else feeling a bit deflated that there is no news on when gyms are going to reopen.

Before anyone says exercise outside like walking and cycling, I already do those but I still miss th weight machines and swimming.

I know alot can be done at home but since spend quite alot of time in the house from working I just want my gym to go exercise in, a different building and environment.

Kazzyhoward
So why are open air swimming pools still ordered to be closed ?

And actually i do not sweat and drip over any equipment at all
as I have manners and a reasonable level of fitness

people DO sweat and drip all over the toilets in a pub
but that is fine Hmm

going to places like gyms which are high risk.
No they are not.

B1rdbra1n · 24/06/2020 11:06

The purpose of going to the pub is to loosen up lose your inhibitions a bit and socialise
The purpose of going to the gym (in my case) is to perform strength training exercises.

Making the pub covid secure would defeat the object of going to the pub and make it impossible for the owners to have enough customers in in order that they can make a profit.
The gym could be made covid secure without defeating the purpose of going to the gym although the reduced numbers would make it difficult for the owners to still make profit.

Many business models depend on functioning in a way which cannot be covid secure

The gyms have been working really hard to put measures in place to make sure gyms are clean. My gym have put screens up between all equipment, cleaning multiple times a day, wipes and spray to clean equipment yourself before and after use, limited numbers, temperature check in admission.

I'd feel far safer there than in a pub.

B1rdbra1n · 24/06/2020 11:38

The whole point of the pub is to mingle and chat, to be quite loud, to be close together and social and to amplify that by using alcohol to loosen your inhibitions

The gym is about being strict and disciplined, not being able to chat and mingle in the gym means you get a better more focused workout

I am
Loving not going to the gym and just running etc . Miss is socially though

Feellikedancingyeah · 24/06/2020 14:53

Better get the climbing walls open soon !

mrpumblechook · 24/06/2020 15:41

I like swimming but I don't think it would be safe unless the pool can be accessed without going through changing rooms. I also don't want to pay the usual monthly fee if (as has been suggested) fewer people can swim at any one time as it will be a lot of money for not many swims.

Changing rooms are no more dangerous than pub toilets ......

Define safe
As from the number of cases and hospitalisations in my area
every member of my gym would have to be there at once to present a real risk

crossing the road outside the place is more hazardous

WaffleCash · 24/06/2020 16:56

I'd hazard a guess that they are less risky, our changing room has approx 60 cubicles, the pub only has 2 ladies toilets. Coupled with everyone having had a generous dosing of chlorine there appears to be no scientific basis behind opening one and not the other.

Figures suggest that 1 in 1700 propel currently have COVID. The chances are, a large number of these will be feeling unwell so will be at home, not at the gym. The risk of one of them happening to be in the changing room at the same time as you, in close enough proximity to pass on the infection is highly unlikely.

And in the unlikely event this did happen, for most people it's not a serious illness. I'd take my chances! The benefits to my health and well-being far outweigh the risks.

I am feeling deflated Sad

I really miss the gym. I bought my own exercise bike and have been walking a lot but for me the gym is a bit of a ritual and I really miss it. I can imagine the clamber for gym time will rival hairdressing appointments.

It's one in 1700 at the moment that it will quite likely increase now that things are open again so not necessarily highly unlikely to be in close proximity to an infected person within a month or so.

That's up to you. I'm over 50 like many others who use my local gym/swimming pool so I wouldn't say the risk of serious illness is particularly low and I wouldn't want to walk through changing rooms. If the gym opened I would probably be forced to pay so I'm happy it isn't at the moment

ListeningQuietly · 24/06/2020 19:08

It can only increase if people are contagious ....

I am well over 50
and I've done the test thingy and my risk of being really ill is under 1/1000
so crossing the road is a similar risk

I'm not quite sure where you get from. If you crossed the road tomorrow your risk of being run over wouldn't be 1/1000.

Well next week we should see any impact of protesting on the numbers so let's see what happens and if there is no rise then open the gyms because that was thousands of people not social distancing enough

They were outside and a large proportion wearing masks.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/06/2020 20:27

I've been working out at home and doing some outdoor classes. Now I'm seriously sunburnt as managed to sweat off the suncream.

I don't get it. It seems very arbitrary at the moment. Before the gyms closed, we were all being super careful about cleaning the equipment. Makes much more sense to open than bloody pubs. I'm also worried that my gym won't survive.

VE Day?
May bank holiday with Durdle door?
still waiting for those infection surges nope, not happened

And TBH a BLM protest in London should have no impact on opening a gym in Spalding

EpilepsyMum4 · 24/06/2020 21:15

As someone who works in the fitness industry, as much as zoom is a nightmare and my room is a pain to teach in, I really don’t want to see any clients anytime soon. I just don’t think it’s time.

EpilepsyMum4 · 24/06/2020 21:17

But the free online classes can piss off Grin So many instructors trying to make a living, on reduced rates, who may not have met the criteria for any grants.

cyclingmad · 24/06/2020 21:24

It's more the weights room, swimming pool, treadmill for me.
Not really into classes

Well roll on mid july let's hope they open up

EpilepsyMum4 · 24/06/2020 21:26

To be fair with swimming it’s not the swimming itself but the changing facilities. Even Nuffield Health we’re keen to shout about pre-lockdown that it was fine to swim because of the chlorine 😑 Swim England seem to be trying to wade through though.

cologne4711 · 24/06/2020 21:31

I think there is an issue with indoor pools but not outdoor ones. FGS get them open while the weather is nice.
