Anyone else feeling a bit deflated that there is no news on when gyms are going to reopen.

Before anyone says exercise outside like walking and cycling, I already do those but I still miss th weight machines and swimming.

I know alot can be done at home but since spend quite alot of time in the house from working I just want my gym to go exercise in, a different building and environment.

To be fair with swimming it’s not the swimming itself but the changing facilities
Changing rooms at my gym are FAR nicer than any pub toilets or train station toilets or airport toilets I've ever been in

Hmm

I’m also very over online classes and running, it’s just not the same. In Scotland so who knows when things will open. I don’t go to a gym but I do go to reformer Pilates and yoga classes and both have put so much effort into how they’ll make their studios safe. Fewer people in each class, longer between classes, no changing or showering facilities, you’re basically in and out. The pilates place has even put massive Perspex screens between each machine and will get you to come in one by one and stay in your ‘zone’ so you won’t pass by anyone.

I really feel for the owners of these places, they’re investing loads of money into getting ready, won’t be getting as much income when they reopen and now just have to wait while everyone heads back to the shops

You don't have to go in pub toilets though and people don't shower in them.

Having caught norovirus from my gym one autumn, twice in 6 weeks, I don’t rate their ability to keep it clean and santised. It’s a fairly cheap gym (I pay £250 a year) so I wouldn’t think it has the cash to put in extra measures. I’ve signed up to an online membership of classes - cardio combat, legs bums and tums, body conditioning etc - I feel like I am working much harder now than I do at the gym - probably due to the fact that I enjoy it more than sitting on a bike/treadmill and can be more flexible with the time I do it. I’d be happy for my gym to remain closed for a few more months tbh.

I’d like my kids to get back to swimming lessons, but not sure how that will happen, there’s usually 8 in each group and they are all tightly packed in at the end of the pool listening to instructions, about 2” apart.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/06/2020 07:32

Does anyone think they would track and trace people at gyms / swimming as that would out me off. I have a membership so it would be easy to see who was in the building at any time. I am maybe considering joining an exercise class in the park instead but would miss the pool.

So the fact that they would be able to tell if you had been exposed and would be able to ask you to isolate and not infect other people would put you off?!

Orangeblossom78 · 25/06/2020 07:43

Yes it would - would that not be reasonable? Many of us can't just stay home for weeks at a time.

mrpumblechook · 25/06/2020 07:55

Yes it would - would that not be reasonable? Many of us can't just stay home for weeks at a time.

If you can't afford to self isolate you should be doing what you can to avoid coming into contact with infected people but avoiding detection so that you don't have to self isolate is very selfish. What about all the people you might infect as a result of not self isolating? They probably can't afford to stay at home either.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/06/2020 07:58

Oh for goodness sake

I am talking about reconsidering join gin the gym to prevent having to keep isolating

Not non compliance with isolating Hmm

I was asking of others knew about the details on this- for example would it be people in the building, in the same class for example

because with hundreds going to a city sports centre it could be a high chance

mrpumblechook · 25/06/2020 08:08

Not non compliance with isolating

You may not be talking about non compliance if you have been asked to isolate but avoiding detection so that you aren't asked even if you have been exposed is effectively the same thing.

because with hundreds going to a city sports centre it could be a high chance

If there is a high chance of being in contact with someone who is infected then there is a high chance of being infected. This should be the consideration not whether they will be able to tell whether you have been exposed.

Mascotte · 25/06/2020 08:10

I can't wait for the gym to reopen and will be there as soon as it does so!

Paranoidmarvin · 25/06/2020 08:15

I imagine that David Lloyd will still take my July payment even if we can use it. They have been awful to contact during lockdown with everyone being ignored. And I’m not paying for half a service

bigbluebus · 25/06/2020 08:22

Most people at the gym I go to don't use the changing rooms - they arrive in kit and shower when they get home. In the weeks before lockdown, everyone at my spin class cleaned their bikes before and after use. Class numbers were reduced to allow for spacing out. Disinfectant wipes and hand sanitiser were all over the gym. The air con isn't great so in hot weather it's usually turned off and the big roller shutters are opened allowing free flow of air from outside. I would definitely be happier to go to the gym than indoors in a local pub.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/06/2020 08:25

Mrpumble well you could say that for shops too, where do you draw the line? Hundreds of people pass through them too

There is a difference between people passing though the main door then heading to a different class / floor than sharing a class with them.

MissEliza · 25/06/2020 08:46

@Paranoidmarvin that doesn't surprise me at all. Their customer service was non-existent at the best of times. I was just saying to my dh last night that they never properly cleaned them either. It's amazing given the prices we were paying for membership. I moved to an independent, privately owned gym for half the monthly fee and it's immaculate.

Paranoidmarvin · 25/06/2020 09:07

@MissEliza. Ours is wonderful immaculate and the staff are always wonderful. We love going. Just not happy with how the powers that be have done this. And then taking money. They also have not refunded the money from when they closed. We could choose something else or donate

Stellakent · 25/06/2020 09:12

Paranoidmarvin are your gym still taking payments? Mine, another large chain, suspended payments when they closed.

Faithtrusts · 25/06/2020 09:27

I've found it frustrating things like pubs have opened ahead of gyms. I love my gym and used it a lot... I've really missed it.

I'm torn on the opening though, at th eminent I am paying nothing and getting nothing which is fine. My concern is having to start paying full price for my gym (which is a fair bit of money a month) but then fighting to book a tome slot to go and not getting to use it as much as I did. I sometimes go twice a day, do maybe two classes etc. If I can't use it that much then it's not value for money in my eyes...

I do wish they would just open as pre covid (just before lockdown) with the owness on cleaning that it had. I think to just treat those of us who are aware of the risk but want to still go the best way rather than restrict it so it's impractical...

I've already decided I won't be paying to have to fight for class space which was already crap at 35 per class, be dictated to the Time I can go because I work full time, and not be allowed it use it the way I did before. It's a lot of money to me for not being able to use it.

Which makes me worry as if we all think like me (I know my husband is going to do the same and cancel if it's too restrictive) the gyms will collapse.... it's a tough one.

ListeningQuietly · 25/06/2020 10:02

If your gym is grubby move to another.

The insanity is that outdoor lidos are not allowed to open

and yet Bournemouth beach is allowed to be HEAVING

SpokeTooSoon · 25/06/2020 10:10

I haven’t done any research so this is just a gut reaction but surely it’s because people are sweating and heavy breathing, wiping their brows and putting their sweaty hands on everything. Gyms must be crawling with bacteria and viruses at the best of times. You see people literally wiping their sweat off the machines after they’ve used them - doesn’t that tell you something?

It is very easy to replicate at home most of what you do there. I used to waste so much time “going to the gym”, I get a more effective workout at home now in half the time. Invest in a mat and some dumbbells and do hiit workouts from the comfort of your home/garden. Popsugar have loads. Running is free (although I hate it), brisk walking, cycling far nicer outdoors.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/06/2020 10:33

I'm surprised about the delay in gyms

Here in Germany, gyms opened on 16 May, before pubs and restaurants could even open outdoors
I'm an (almost 64-yr-old) gym rat so I'm in 5-6 days per week

So far no outbreaks in gyms here - but several in slaughterhouses and churches

To enable SD (was always 1.5m here):

There are strict limits on class numbers,
some weight benches have been taped off
machines moved around
initially no showers or sauna, but they reopened too

The staff at check-in wear masks
However, no perspex screens / dividers anywhere !

There is deep cleaning every night.
Sanitiser everywhere

ohthegoats · 25/06/2020 10:42

Gyms and swimming pools were part of this phase of reopening planning - I've just listened to the woman from Swim England or whatever it's called, getting cross about it. They did loads of work for a June 12th deadline that then has been ignored. They were in consultation with PHE before the deadline, and had made changes to lane swimming, considered numbers of people inside etc. But still ignored.

I hope the open quickly. We know this virus is killed my chlorine. I miss swimming SO much.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/06/2020 10:44

I've some kit at home too, but there's a massive difference being in a group and having the trainer plan the class program, motivate us

Also, I can't possibly duplicate all the weights and machines they have

I certainly noticed the difference in how hard I worked when I returned to the gym
and it took me a couple of weeks to return to previous fitness levels,
despite training at home and indoors during lockdown

ListeningQuietly · 25/06/2020 10:56

BigChoc
Before Lockdown I swam 4 to 5 miles a week in an outdoor pool
NOTHING can replace that level of cardio and vitamin D

and YYY
I know you were worried about transmission before your gym re opened
and how impressed you have been by how its been done

the boss of Pure Gym was seething as he has re opened 130 gyms on the continent safely
but is not trusted to open his UK ones

mrpumblechook · 25/06/2020 11:19

Yes, but wouldn't your gym know what class you went to and what time? Mine certainly would and I would expect that information to be used for contact tracing.
