World beating Track and Trace

126 replies

longwayoff · 16/06/2020 08:50

What's happened to this? I've lost track of days, weeks, months and now this. Boris was proclaiming it's worth last time I saw him on TV. Is it working? Has it gone countrywide? What's going on?

@KingJarvisofPulp

Everyone in the surgery would be contacted regardless
Really? Would they all have to isolate for seven days then, even if they hadn't been anywhere near the infected patient?
Baaaahhhhh · 16/06/2020 12:30

Just as an interesting aside, only 25% of the population of Singapore have apparently downloaded their app, and that in a very conformist and authority trusting country.

Fairineouf · 16/06/2020 13:34

@longwayoff

King Jarvis it's very kind of you to attempt to defend this but you evidently have no relevant information to impart. Its not football, shouting from the sidelines is unhelpful.
Are other people not allowed to have a different opinion to yours without resorting to a childish putdown Longwayoff?

Since you accuse others of "evidently having no relevant information" where is yours? Oh, sorry, looking back you have nothing to add other than to canvas opinion about something you could have easily looked up on the internet but chose not to. So basically a segway into another Boris bashing thread. Yawn.

As far as apps go, the Zoe tracking app has been downloaded by fewer than 4 million so approximately 7% of the adult population. If people aren't willing to download Zoe then in your opinion how many do you think will download a Government official track and trace app?

Singapore has approximately 30% uptake of the adult population. That's in a very law abiding country.

Norway has closed down its app because of privacy issues.

Australia uptake is running at less than 30%.

The effectiveness of any track and trace is only as good as the people who choose to comply and that goes for manual track and trace as well as a phone app track and trace.

If people choose to ignore track and trace, whose fault would it be? Boris's for bigging it up or those who decide to ignore it?

Topseyt · 16/06/2020 13:41

I don't know anyone who trusts the government enough with their data to even download the app. I don't want the app and won't be getting it.

It isn't world beating. It is shit.

If it's a doctors surgery, the surgery would be contacted and names would be given. You can't on a train obviously but that's where the app will come in although going by Mumsnet, no one will be downloading it so the virus is here to stay...

That's probably why social distancing and face coverings are mandatory on public transport.
Gfplux · 16/06/2020 13:56

Has the Government delivered anything correctly.
If you do think so then don’t sign this

Well considering a countrywide app isn't yet up and running and you have no idea what data the government will actually hold, I don't really understand how you can claim it's shit.

But you have a point about data and trust so a bit more information about how the government could abuse the data it collects would be really useful as you obviously know more than I have managed to find out online.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 14:16

That's probably why social distancing and face coverings are mandatory on public transport.

Face coverings from Monday just gone (if people abide by it I suppose) but social distancing? How? Are they controlling how many people can get on a train?

Baaaahhhhh · 16/06/2020 14:22

Bear in mind it is an NHS app, and the NHS already have all your data.

Justjoinedforthis · 16/06/2020 14:23

Someone I know in the CS works on this ... it's not working well at all!

Apparently so. There are limits on buses.
longwayoff · 16/06/2020 14:58

Oh farinenoeuf, you are correct, I don't have relevant information that's why I posed the question. I want to know how well the world beating system is working. MN seemed a reasonable place to ask for a range of views to be offered as to how it's working out. Thank you for your contribution.

feelingverylazytoday · 16/06/2020 15:05

No offence , OP, but did you bother googling it? There's plenty of information there.

sashagabadon · 16/06/2020 15:25

@blackpeonies

Indeed *@long* I using think the expression 'world-beating' shows an English leadership stuck in 1940s and genuinely believing themselves. Actually this is 2020 and England looks weak and sick and isolated; what an embarrassment. I think it's is a weird mix with the same powers obsessing and sweating out bots and fake-newsing and influencing on social media. It should be looking to Switzerland or Finland or Singapore but instead it just seems to listen out for Aus and NZ and Canada (fair enough) and the US - meanwhile they are on a totally different track. Those who are leading us out of Europe triumphantly seem to have no idea.
Honestly the uk bashing is ridiculous. We are world leading on vaccines, treatments and track and trace will get there. Why would you want to put everything down. Go and have a nice walk in the fresh air. Life is really not that bad
Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 15:26

I could see it on buses - one way on, one way off, driver knows how many people are on the bus, but on a tube train stopping every two or three minutes, multiple entrances/exits - who is keeping track of how many people are on board at any time?

longwayoff · 16/06/2020 15:31

No, feeling very lazy today, I didn't, I wanted to know what MN users thought. Now I know. Thanks everyone.

However, just mentioned in passing in parliamentary reply that government 'is seeking to have it, the app, up and running this winter'.

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/06/2020 19:08

government 'is seeking to have it, the app, up and running this winter'

So it was originally supposed to be summer ... then September/October ... and now it's winter, which almost certainly means next summer if we're lucky, and like most government I.T. initiatives it'll probably be a mess even then

In the meantime, does anyone know why thousands have been employed to tell "known contacts" to get a test, when presumably the infected are quite capable of doing that for themselves?

Gfplux · 17/06/2020 19:43

@sashagabadon

World beating at Vaccines.

I am not convinced, prove it please.

It isn't world beating. It is shit.

And yet the same people will use Facebook and Instagram. They’ll also happily transmit constant location information with apps like Pokemon Go.

Companies having our data to sell = OK. Governments having our data to protect us = violation of privacy.

Not that I trust the UK government’s intentions, but the double standards make no sense.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 20:23

Surprised you have not hear more OP, it has been on the news quite a bit?

Seems to be working well, from what I have heard e.g. people I know have had a test booked same day and results the following morning.

longwayoff · 17/06/2020 20:47

That's not the same thing thanks, Orange blossom. I'm glad testing is working reasonable well although I understand that there are still key workers who can't gain access. I was asking about the contact and trace app.

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 21:04

There was a problem with that app in trials on the Isle of Wight. Can't remember what it was though.

megletthesecond · 17/06/2020 21:09

The virus will probably be burnt out by the time the system is up and running.

Oxford vaccine well in progress and imperial about to start human trials in june.
There are not many countries in the world with our capabilities in this field. China, us, germany but not many others. Thats world leading in my view.
Why not be proud of your country when it does somethings well? I really don't get the debbie downer attitude at all.
