Today I broke the rules

First time since 21st March. Shielding mum who is very poorly. I didn’t realise how bad it had got due to shielding.
Long story short she has been in hospital on and off last few weeks due to and pain in leg. She is alone and is an end stage renal patient, had stroke and heart attack in past 2 years. Tomorrow the are amputating her leg. She is devastated and so confused. Her chances of surviving are not great.
I was allowed finally to see her for a short time in a private room. I cuddled her several times as she cried. I looked at her black foot knowing what she is about to go through alone and cuddled the hell out of her. She has had Covid tests and is clear and I have been following all guidance. Even the nurse said to me on the quiet when you go in the room let her see you, cuddle her she needs it. I’m so scared and can’t rest now thinking what is going to happen to her in the morning and also worrying I done the wrong thing but I know for her she needed that hug. I bloody hate this virus.

I don’t think you did break the rules, you were providing care to a vulnerable person.

Hope all goes well with the operation and sorry you and your mum are going through this.

you did the right thing op.

SookieStackhouseSucks · 15/06/2020 22:18

I've been where you are, in a very similar situation, but it was my dad and before the added complication of covid, but I know that she needed that hug. No doubt about it. Hope all goes as best it can for her.

RiftGibbon · 15/06/2020 22:19

No flaming from me. You did the right thing for both of you in the circumstances. I hope all goes well. x

lunar1 · 15/06/2020 22:19

You did the right thing. I hope the surgery went as planned. Thanks

Polkadotdelight · 15/06/2020 22:20

You did what we all would have done. You would have been heartless not to and I wish you both all the very best. Hoping you will be able to come back with a positive update.

Whoopsmahoot · 15/06/2020 22:29

No question you did the right thing for you both. ❤️

Jellybeansincognito · 15/06/2020 22:40

This is the only acceptable reason to break the rules at the moment. I hope she’s ok after her op x

Passthebubbly · 15/06/2020 23:00

Thanks everyone. The op went ahead today and at the moment she is stable. It will be the days ahead to see if the wound will heal as she is so tiny and her skin is paper thin. She has come through so much especially in the last 2 years so if anyone can get through then it’s her. However I am realistic and will take it one day at a time. I was broken last night and felt helpless so thanks to you all for boosting me up.

Glad to hear that the op went ok, passthebubbly. Hope you can catch up on some sleep. Then, as you say, you can only take things one day at a time for the moment. I suspect that if they did not think your mum had a chance to pull through, they would not have operated.
