Was furloughing worth the National debt

Government funding of furloughed employees has resulted in huge national debt. But massive redundancies are pending. Was it worth it? We seem to have arrived at the worst of all worlds: national debt plus massive unemployment.

I know three or four months of additional income will on an individual level would be very meaningful (my DD is furloughed) but job losses are coming none the less (my DD for one, again). Was it the right thing to do or has the Government made a balls up?

OfUselessBooks : If we both get made redundant we will be in a similar situation - not entitled to any benefits due to dh's inheritance which he hoped would be for his pension years. We have 2 dependent children and another at University whose accommodation we currently are paying £350 a month for ( whilst he lives at home as no Uni ). My contract has been extended for a year but the charity that funds us is losing huge amounts of money so the future is uncertain.

the tide against offshore tax is turning v v v fast
I think so too, Jeff will be having pitchfork themed dreams:)

based on whistleblowing and simple inspections
In hindsight it seems obvious that people would try to take the piss but equally obvious that a whistle blower network would spontaneously arise to police the non compliant!

Oh bless @NoHardSell but guess what you can still have picnic with the kids if your not furloughed and sit on your arse .
To answer your question of course I've not emailed my mp I'm having a lovely time sitting on my arse .
I'm having a meeting this week to find out if I'm to be made redundant so hopefully that will cheer you up because obviously us furloughed people it's our own fault isn't it that you hate you job and hate your life and we are living the dream and you are jealous.
I'm happy to swap if you want because of course we are not enjoying furloughed but it's a global pandemic and my industry is not fully open yet .
I'm not understanding how you can possibly be jealous of anyone that job is under threat but we will see how things pan out be careful what you wish for .

My 3 months furlough will hopefully be the only "benefits" I get in my life.

I hope so too and also that your savings get you through a brief rainy day.

I'm so glad you had those 3 months to cushion you. Apply for JSA (both of you) and get a benefits check before you ever get to applying for Universal Credit.

Have you been claiming tax credits? How old are your children? What are your caring responsibilities? (Questions for you, not for the thread.)

Wishing you all the best and us all a V-shaped recovery.

Hats off to Ikea who are paying all governments who subsided their staff furlough payments their money back. In the UK they didn’t claim the money. The Furloughed staff were paid by Ikea.

Games Workshop are paying their back too as sales have been higher than expected.

YounghillKang · 15/06/2020 17:35

Yes I think it was the right thing to do, and reading about other countries in Europe, our government has been far less supportive financially than others.

YounghillKang · 15/06/2020 17:38

And no I'm not someone on furlough, so have no vested interests.

NoHardSell · 15/06/2020 18:23
@NoHardSell why don't you go out and enjoy the sunshine? Sit on your arse and have a picnic with the kids, or have a walk in the park? These things are not exclusively available for the furloughed.

I for one have enjoyed a lovely BBQ lunch with some social distancing friends. We will take the DC for a bike ride when it's a bit cooler... and yes, tomorrow I will be back at work. Very, very happy after 8 weeks on furlough
Erm ... work .....

To be fair, this week I am still working 7 days but it's way more chill and I got an hour off for lunch which was good.

Furlough and Sunak's other schemes will be less costly to the UK economy than Brexit.

We still have a chance to save ourselves from the latter.

No

Ikea did not claim any UK Furlough money and plans to repay other European Governments.

Maybe a list of all companies that claimed over £1m
would allow company accounts readers to see who needed the money and who should repay it ....

A third of companies took the money and made staff work anyway
