Going abroad this Summer?

Is anyone thinking of going abroad this Summer for holidays or are you staying home? My DH is from abroad (East Europe) and we were thinking of going to see his family mid July for a week. Its us two plus one DS. I'm in two minds about it.

I know some people would say yes but personally I think it would be a really poor choice this year and would honestly rather just write off any international travel this year.

Things have changed so fast this year it’s not certain that the situation here or your destination would be remain the same for the duration of your trip. Added to that I’ve seen people talking about how insurance is an issue and not covering covid related eventualities.

I think in another six months we’ll know so much more and be able to make a much more informed choice rather than relying on guesswork and luck.

No. I usually go to Brazil then pick another South or Central American country from there so definitely not a good (or even possible, I shouldn't think!) idea.

I will be if there’s a plane going. I’ve already had 3.5 months apart from my fiancé and I’m NOT willing to go until next year without seeing him

Yes I'm getting married abroad in September. We've already postponed from June. I haven't seen DP since January so I'll be first on that plane!

We have booked a fully refundable trip to visit family in France in August, we know it might not happen but thought we had nothing to lose by booking.

Yes I hope so but I will book something last minute depending on how everywhere does with the virus. But it will be somewhere in Europe and I think it will feel safe.

I live in Spain and I'm really hoping my mum can come and visit in July. It's been a really tough time and Spain has made a huge effort getting their CV19 figures under control. The only thing that will prevent her coming is if there is a huge spike in figures from the UK and Spain prevent UK citizens entering.

I will go anywhere that’s accepts us when the travel ban is lifted and it is deemed safe to fly. My flights to the USA have been cancelled for August so that is out of the question. But I would love to see family that live in Cyprus and Bulgaria.

We're going to southern Europe to see my MIL in July. I think that's completely different to going on a package holiday. My MIL has been alone in a small apartment and it's important we go and see her for her mental health. This country has a very low rate of infections so we're not likely to bring the virus back with us. If we didn't have family abroad I'd holiday in the UK this year but I don't see this so much as a holiday - but as family duty. People are allowed to visit family in this country.

No, I have written off this year for holidays abroad. May grab a week in this country if things get back to “normal”.

If you'd asked me last week I would have said yes. But we've now just cancelled ours. We were due to go at the beginning of July, and too many variables are still unknown. It was too expensive (for us) a holiday for it to be spoiled so will rebook for next year.

I'd absolutely consider a bargain short hop though if it was going to be possible.

We are planning to go to France in August. We go every year to the same place and have done since I was a toddler, and we will be happy just to sit in our caravan and walk along the beach with our home cooked food for a fortnight.

I think everyone feels differently about holidays - i can see how this probably isn't the year for travel if you want to be out in restaurants and enjoying the nightlife, but I honestly can't see how the UK could accommodate us all holidaying at home without huge overcrowding and I just can't see why we would be any less 'safe' driving to France than driving to anywhere within the UK.

I think the travel rules will change shortly too, and that the direction of travel is positive (if people are prepared to maintain sensible behaviours) x

People are responding about normal holidays but visiting family is completely different in my opinion. I wouldn't not go for a holiday abroad this year. I AM going to visit an elderly relative who lives alone.

We might book closer to the time. DH wants to see his cousins also so we will potentially be in four or five different houses. He wants to go to waterparks also as they are opening next week. Its difficult to know what to do. Virus is everywhere now, albeit somewhat controlled, so is their a difference holidaying here or abroad. I'm not sure.

We were due to visit in laws in Spain in July and would have gone ahead with it if our flights hadn’t been cancelled (me, DH and 3 young DC). We haven’t seen them for a long time.
We have rebooked for October half term. If it ends up not going ahead then so be it, but might as well have it booked!

We had a trip to Portugal booked for July, booked before all this. We're still very much hoping to go. We are self catering in a private villa, I might think differently if it was a hotel/all inclusive type holiday. Now we just have to wait and see if we can go.

Not going abroad this summer but I'd like to visit my family in the UK in September or October.

I am hoping to go on a weekend city break at the end of August.

we moved our holiday to kefalonia from june to end of August so we will be going as long as travel restrictions allow it

No. I was planning on Spain in September..but my DP doesn't want to take risk of a second lockdown..l would chance it. I'm presuming 2 weeks self isolating will stop before then as l don't have enough holiday for that. I'm still working on DP.

We've moved our 20 July holiday to next year I'm so relieved although as tui have moved flights back to 10 July I think it would have been cancelled anyway. I was worried we would end up tied into a holiday that would be unenjoyable- quarantine both ends, limited use of facilities, locals not wanting us , half the result closed

No. I suspect no travel insurance policy will cover Coronavirus and, having worked in the industry and dealt with all sorts of insurance issues, I would never travel without it now, and definitely not with children.

We are moving our August holiday in France to next year. I think the risk is fairly low but I would feel irresponsible in the extreme if we travelled and numbers picked up again. Very conscious that that's how it spread in the first place and that was under 6 months ago.

I want to go to Ireland or DP to come here from Ireland as soon as possible; we haven't seen each other since February.

To us its not a holiday though and we are desperate to understand what 'essential travel' is as at the moment we are advised not to make non essential travel. To me it's obviously not a holiday to a hotel/villa where you have no family.

yes, visiting parents whom I could not see because of Covid. If a planes flies, I will be on it with the DC.
