What would you actually like the government to do on schools.

The demands on this site with regards to schooling are simply incompatible. Schools physically do not have the room or staff to reopen to their normal numbers of pupils with any form of social distancing in place, so it clearly isn't possible to get all kids back to school full time with social distancing in place.
What exactly would you like the government to be doing on schools that is actually feasible?

Come now, all you need is a can do attitude, not 1 million pounds, surely. MN has said so.

Barbie222 · 10/06/2020 20:43

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras there's always the Ministry of Magic. I've put in for a clone of myself and a new classroom too.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/06/2020 20:45

@Barbie222

See, that's more like the attitude that we need.

Do you have a Defence of the Dark Arts teacher yet?

I really feel for teachers right now. None of this is your fault.

Schools and nurseries to re-open normally with no futile attempts of social distancing kids. PPE for adults if they want it.

pooiepooie25 · 10/06/2020 21:04

Why is it ok to bin off social distancing in schools but continue with social distancing everywhere else? Why do you think that teaching staff are less important than everyone?

I don't think teachers are any less important.

It's near on impossible to social distance in schools. What choice do we have?

It's either don't social distance or keep schools shut or on some shitty part time rota. And for how long?

We should do it wherever possible to try and control the spread but there any many scenarios where it's not possible.

BertNErnie · 10/06/2020 21:08

If it's safe enough for schools to reopen fully with no PPE then it's safe enough to reopen parks, playgrounds, zoos and also for children to meet up and play with their peers outside of school - in the outdoors OR inside houses.

Barbie222 · 10/06/2020 21:12

We can't really social distance from the youngest children but we can do from the older ones and other adults to a certain extent.

The lowering of risk comes from the lowering of numbers - presumably from an overall point of view you are less likely to have an outbreak with fewer children and the situation can be managed by closing a smaller part of the school.

But within the bubbles we don't know the risk of transmission yet really - we will see when the bubbles burst, all are tested and the infection rates per bubble come back. We are in the dark.

MoreW1ne · 10/06/2020 21:26

Stick the kids with the grandparents for the next 5 weeks. Then we can all get back to work in the meantime.

That will prove kids are no risk and then schools can all open up like normal in September and we can just put this mess behind us and move on.

User8008135 · 10/06/2020 21:36

Part time everyone back, classes outside forest school style where possible. Temperature checking coming in and not attending if ill.

Titsywoo · 10/06/2020 21:40

Lots of grandparents still work themselves or are unable to look after kids 5 days a week due to health issues etc so not sure that will work
MoreW1ne · 10/06/2020 21:43

Lets have some more positive can do attitude Titsy.

OneJump · 10/06/2020 21:57

How do you do Forest School in weather like we've had today? (torrential rain).

MoreW1ne · 10/06/2020 22:00

I've got several spare coats, I'll lend you one.

I've been down the beach almost every day for the last couple of weeks (teacher obviously)....we could have done plenty of outside teaching then.

Missed opportunity....now were gonna have to wait until January to kids back.

User8008135 · 10/06/2020 22:11

Hence the where possible OneJump. Since forest schools do still operate come rain or shine, it's worth looking to them for ideas.

lljkk · 10/06/2020 22:12

I've mentioned this before... Forest School at DC primary involved kids wearing PPE. overalls, raincoats, wellies, hand washing, etc. Staff are afraid of Lyme disease. It's very unconducive to learning imho, but hey ho...

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/06/2020 22:26

Hearhoovesthinkzebras

I never said teachers or unions were to blame

I know from seeing ds at school the social distancing doesn’t work

WHO recommend one meter

What are we going to do keep children who are not vulnerable away from school until we have a vaccine

ChaoticCatling · 10/06/2020 22:31

So finding a way to reduce class sizes, reduce child stress and distress has go to be a useful by product of this chaos
I agree. I'd prefer reception classes of 15 and year 1 and 2 classes of 20. Obviously the number of classrooms is currently a barrier. I think 4 to 7 year old children should be spending substantial time active and outdoors though, so outside space could maybe be used in rotation.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/06/2020 23:40

WHO recommend one meter

And SAGE said two metres.

They must have their reasons because it would make the government's life much easier if they could just re open schools.

Do you know how many kids turn up with out the correct equipment or clothing?

No spare shoes or clean clothes? No waterproofs or wellies?

They won’t be able to lend them out anymore.

Most don’t have the right uniform let alone extras.

Do people really think working with kids runs this smoothly?

twinnywinny14 · 11/06/2020 05:52

I think people are missing he point when they say ‘if this is open then that can be too’ or ‘if I can do this then I can do that’. This is about reducing contacts and risks of transmission, so we can’t do a certain amount of things, even if they have the same risk level but because we are limited as to how much we can do them

Attictroll · 11/06/2020 06:01

All classes back part time. Government to treat it like an emergency and Use many of the current in opened council spaces - leisure centres, libraries and Any offers.
To ask “checked” parents to help with lunchtime supervision.

Think of the situation for all children.

A little for all rather than all for some.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 11/06/2020 06:04

Twiny, you're right, but people also miss the point when they say give teachers PPE as if that will make the teachers feel safer.

Unless it's surgical grade then it protects other people mostly.

Teacher wears PPE = kids protected (I think this is important due to preventing community spread but as people keep saying they are at lower risk of being seriously ill with this)

For teachers to be protected, all kids need to wear PPE. Properly. Remember what happened when your science teacher asked you to wear safety goggles?

Anyway, schools weren't shut to protect teachers, it was to prevent community spread.

Attictroll · 11/06/2020 06:04

And I would like govt, unions and teachers to start with the attitude of what can we do not what we can’t. And use some of the fresh thinking other sectors have employed.
