It seems to be middle aged overweight men that have the most problem, or the rudeness to say something /point and laugh. Is that because they know they are more at risk so seeing me masked up makes them uncomfortable?
I wear it in any enclosed space including cars as I have to drive other peoples cars for work. I know the studies are limited but there does seem consensus that it will at least stop me spreading it if I'm asymptomatic.
Just going to a car and a man said 'why a you fucking wearing that' and laughed at me. Why?

I overheard an older woman in the supermarket say “what does she think she looks like” to her husband. I replied “ooh the phones ringing, think 2019 wants you back”. Then walked off leaving her all Shock

puffinandkoala · 05/06/2020 18:31

Oh is that why people wear them in cars? I saw someone yesterday driving a car wearing what looked like a full-blown medical one and thought "really"? And it wasn't a taxi!

I have been wearing one for weeks when I got into a supermarket, and also used one the last time I used a train before lockdown (though not for the whole journey as the train was very empty).

I had a comment from an older man, why he felt the need to say something I don't know

because they do. They need to keep their mouths zipped.

I don't think there's anything funny about wearing one unless you have a funny design on them Smile.

My mother has made cotton masks. She lives on an island where there haven't been any cases for a couple of months, no-one is allowed on the island except residents, her nearest neighbours are a field away and she never travels by public transport (there isn't any). I have yet to work out why she thinks she needs a mask but critical thinking is not a strong point.

@Lemons1571 now that! Is going to be my comeback Grin

Mask question here. I have just got a cloth one. When I wear it my breath goes up my glasses and I can’t see ?Blush

tootyfruitypickle · 05/06/2020 20:45

So I do probably look like amusing

bengalcat · 05/06/2020 20:47

Just ignore and bear in mind if the middle aged overweight man gets it he’s far more likely to cop off then you are .

oralengineer · 05/06/2020 20:58

tootyfruity use some tape across your nose to seal the top and it will stop your glasses steaming up.
Any mask is only as good as the seal and only FFP2/3 masks will protect the weary and ONLY if they have been fit tested by a qualified fit tester. I’ve seen a lot of people who’ve managed to get hold of FFP2/3 masks but wearing them incorrectly and obviously not fit tested.
Healthcare workers are protected because of fit testing. It checks the mask is airtight. We are going to be using reusable FFP3 and I’m not looking forward to it. I am considering buying a full respirator hood which will be scary for patients.

UndertheCedartree · 05/06/2020 21:02

Most people wearing them round here in the South East.

OneNewName · 06/06/2020 07:04

Tell them you're allergic to arseholes...then cough and say, "Oh, there it goes again."

Love this.

amillionnamechangeslater000 · 06/06/2020 07:43

What sort of mask. I wear a cotton type one at the supermarket but most admit I’ve giggled when I’ve seen (mainly boys) wearing those ww2 looking things - not to their face obviously!

Lilithpaws · 06/06/2020 08:24

I have worn masks in the car and at home because my seasonal allergies were so bad this year, it was the only relief I could get.
I have been smirked at and photographed by women in their early twenties for wearing a mask in shops. My partner is under investigation for COPD.

Dorual · 06/06/2020 08:39

It annoys me when people say "they look stupid wearing a mask in the car". Who are you to judge?! You don't know the circumstances! Maybe it's a short drive to the shops and fitting it properly at home is quicker and easier than in the car. Maybe they have symotoms and are on the way to a test centre with a child in the back seat, whom they're trying to protect. Maybe they share their car with their vulnerable husband, who they try to distance from at home because the still work, so are protecting shared 'surfaces'. Maybe they just like the mask.

For the people keep quoting WHO, you might need to change your tune
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52945768
The ignorance of some people are just beyond repair. Every other country does it, some British people: “mask does nothing and counter-productive”. No shit. Say that to the family of the extra 60000 deaths.

FizzAfterSix · 06/06/2020 19:00

I see people out jogging in empty parks wearing masks and think they are brainwashed and completely nuts.

Aridane · 06/06/2020 22:40

Well, I’m glad for their consideration and that their panting doesn’t spray me!!

Wingedharpy · 06/06/2020 22:54

Seems sensible to me, to put your mask on at home after washing your hands rather than leaving it until you are about to get out of the car - after, you've fiddled with your house keys, door handles, car keys, car door handle, steering wheel etc etc.
Yes, you can antibac gel first (though, it's not good to keep this in the car in warm weather as the alcohol evaporates) but, soap and water handwash first is best.
Hopefully, your p**s taker will be laughing no more OP in the not too distant future, as, I'm sure mandatory mask wearing, for most, will be expanded to include shops etc.

goose1964 · 06/06/2020 22:56

It's dangerous to drive whilst wearing a maxi as the carbon dioxide builds up.

goose1964 · 06/06/2020 22:57

Mask, God I hate the kindle autocorrect

Wingedharpy · 07/06/2020 00:21

I wondered why there was a trail of comatosed health workers in the corridors of my local hospital goose.

strugglingwithdeciding · 07/06/2020 01:31

Haven't seen anyone laughing at anyone in a mask here and would say half and half in shops but no one is taking that much notice of anyone

strugglingwithdeciding · 07/06/2020 01:34

Will add some here that wear masks think there invincible and social distancing doesn't apply
And as for gloves they have no idea how to wear them so pointless and the amount thrown in the floor is ridiculous
Personally I don't do gloves as I think washing my hands and using anti bac when out is better
I have mask but don't wear it either as I don't really go in enclosed spaces where I will be next to anyone , although I have them in case it becomes compulsory or if I have to go on transport etc

strugglingwithdeciding · 07/06/2020 01:37

@snag but you shouldn't be travelling in other peoples car ? Unless it's a taxi

Snagscardies · 07/06/2020 06:34

@strugglingwithdeciding I'm in their car without them, however all through the pandemic workers shared cars, bin men for instance still shared a cab

I’ve been verbally abused by people on three occasions while wearing a mask, two of those whilst with a vulnerable, elderly family member who I’m a carer for. One woman was goading her child, around the age of 4, to shout abuse at us and telling the child “well done” for joining in Angry.

We live in an area where the R rate is particularly high and is likely to be one of the first places in the country that would be subject to a local lockdown.

Re “wearing a mask in a car”, I don’t take my mask off when driving because I want to minimise how often I touch my face whilst I’m out and about and unable to wash my hands. The other day a young man and his father started laughing at me for wearing a mask in the car park of our doctor’s surgery and didn’t realise one of my car windows was fully open so I could hear what they were saying about me.

The son said, “idiot, look at her sat in her car wearing a mask. Duhhhhh why you wearing a mask when you are sat in a car idiot???”

So I replied that I was waiting for emergency medication being dropped off to my car from a staff member at the surgery for a vulnerable family member and I was wearing a mask because I had no idea how long I was going to have to wait for the staff member to come out and I didn’t want to waste their time scrambling to put it on while they waited. He apologised and looked extremely embarrassed.
