It seems to be middle aged overweight men that have the most problem, or the rudeness to say something /point and laugh. Is that because they know they are more at risk so seeing me masked up makes them uncomfortable?
I wear it in any enclosed space including cars as I have to drive other peoples cars for work. I know the studies are limited but there does seem consensus that it will at least stop me spreading it if I'm asymptomatic.
Just going to a car and a man said 'why a you fucking wearing that' and laughed at me. Why?

MrsGrindah so you're quite happy if someone comments negatively on something you're wearing?

Snagscardies · 05/06/2020 14:07

I mentioned the weight and age as statically they are more likely to have complications and yet they are the ones that have made the comment, especially the one today. And for those that don't believe what I'm writing I can assure you it's true although believe what you wish. I've also had a man comment I'm going to have an intereting tan. We are rural and I don't know anyone that's had it and it's the minority that are wearing masks.

Regards wearing it in a car I don't wear it in mine but I do in other people's as I could contaminate their car if I'm asymptomatic.

Love some of the replies I will remember them in future.

I would be sooooo tempted to say I thought I was infected and start coughing loudly.

TheLashKingOfScotland · 05/06/2020 14:08

No-one here comments.

MrsGrindah · 05/06/2020 14:09

@TimelyManor Yes I am. But we are not talking about just something the OP is wearing ..people are criticising the mask wearing. And I’m saying I think it’s being over sensitive to be annoyed about that.

BlancheDuBlah · 05/06/2020 14:11

Agree with TheFliss overweight men really shouldn't be throwing stones in this situation.

Maybe it comes from fear.

Halestorm · 05/06/2020 14:12

I don't get that mentality at all.

Here in Ireland, the first Tuesday after lockdown I saw several masks being worn in my local town. I thought it was admirable tbh. I've worn one since mid-March when in shops and not a thing was ever said. I got a few side-eyes but people kept their distance from me because of the visual reminder of the mask - and that suited me just fine. When I do my weekly shop I see plenty of people now wearing them. We will see plenty more as the government recommend wearing them indoors and on public transport. I would say that when lockdown gets eased in the UK they will become strongly recommended too and you'll see many more people joining you in wearing one.

OchonAgusOchonO · 05/06/2020 14:13

@NailsNeedDoing - Honestly, I think people look like twats when they are alone in a car and wearing a mask, it makes no sense. Out and about in public, fair enough.

I assume the reason people are wearing them in cars is as the advice is to wash hands before removing them. If you don't have access to hand washing facilities or proper hand sanitiser, then it makes sense to leave it on until you get home. Equally, if you are travelling between locations where you will need a mask, it makes sense to leave it on for the journey.

A lot of men of a certain age (50 plus?) will take any opportunity to laugh at a female. It’s usually the unsuccessful ones who don’t look after themselves. I’ve had a couple of issues with men like this while driving.

I console myself by thinking that they are probably divorced and living in an HMO, so are bitter.

Wecandothis99 · 05/06/2020 14:17

People are dicks, that's why

DippyAvocado · 05/06/2020 14:17

I've seen a number of interesting studies recently about why men in particular are resistant to wearing masks, finding them 'emasculating'.

Locally, I was surprised to see that one of the groups of people I see wearing masks more often are young men in their 20s! I would have thought they would be more resistant. They are usually wearing some kind of DIY mask though, so perhaps that is "manly" enough for them.

*AAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHH!!! Until we educate this out of everyone we are going to lag behind everywhere else in getting rid of Covid 19. When the OP wears a mask, she protects the people around her. In order for her to be protected, others around her need to wear masks. Wearing a mask is an altruistic measure - in order for them to work to protect anyone at all, the majority of people must wear them in order to prevent inadvertent transmission of Covid when they do not know they have it before they show symptoms.

The ignorant repetition “I’m not wearing a mask because it won’t protect me” is holding back a faster recovery for the country. The government foolishly allowed the perception that there is little point in wearing a mask because it does not protect the wearer to seep through our entire society purely because they had foolishly not kept in enough stocks for health workers in the event of a pandemic, and did not want the public taking stocks that medics would need. Countries where mask-wearing was enforced or adopted early on have avoided the explosion in the number of Covid cases the UK has struggled under. The British Medical Association is at a loss as to why we did not adopt it as a strategy sooner, and why, if we are to adopt in now, we are not making it happen until the 15th June.*

backinthebox that is the most sensible thing I've read on the subject.

WhiteChocTwix · 05/06/2020 14:19

I've been using the ones that you have to tie behind your head and neck (all I could get hold of at the time). They are a pain in the arse to keep taking off so I put it on with clean hands before I leave home and take it off with clean hands when I get home. Believe this is also good infection control practice. Couldn't give a stuff how I look while driving 😂

pinktaxi · 05/06/2020 14:19

Tell them you have Covid and are trying to protect them.

Bluesheep8 · 05/06/2020 14:19

What a strange way to think...

"why are you wearing that"

"Because the joke shop had run out of the Halloween masks modelled on your mother "

Or

" I was going to ask you the same thing - then I realised it was your real face"

BruceAndNosh · 05/06/2020 14:22

@FortunesFave

Draw some big sharp teeth on it.
Love this! I hvaen't had any adverse comments , I wear mine where requested ie in shops, not elsewhere. I don't wear it in the car but I only drove my own car alone.

If it really is middleaged overweight men making comments, point out that they are high risk for Covid and you are actually doing THEM a favour

SarahWinston · 05/06/2020 14:23

Guy is just an arsehole trying to make you feel bad! Try not to react to this, or if you do, smile under that mask and say "so I don't have to catch your germs!"

Kittenlicker · 05/06/2020 14:23

I thought it was now compulsory on public transport?

vanillandhoney · 05/06/2020 14:25

Not until the 15th.

Why would you use a put down that insults his mother? He is the wanker.
Kittenlicker · 05/06/2020 14:29

That's not very far off though, is i?t... and then I think less people will be arseholes about it. My guess is that it'll be extended to other places too.
