It seems to be middle aged overweight men that have the most problem, or the rudeness to say something /point and laugh. Is that because they know they are more at risk so seeing me masked up makes them uncomfortable?
I wear it in any enclosed space including cars as I have to drive other peoples cars for work. I know the studies are limited but there does seem consensus that it will at least stop me spreading it if I'm asymptomatic.
Just going to a car and a man said 'why a you fucking wearing that' and laughed at me. Why?

@bigchris

No one wants a second wave ffs. We won’t have a second wave if people aren’t idiots, but it’s people like you who dismiss the possibility as ludicrous that make it more likely to happen! I expect people said the same in Iran (currently experiencing a second wave!)

icansmellburningleaves · 05/06/2020 14:30

Could be worse, you could have been wearing gloves too!

YouokHun · 05/06/2020 14:30

She called me "fucking ridiculous and that I was creating hysteria and scaring her fucking children

@DewDropsonKittens I imagine your masks were the least of her children’s problems.

Bloops · 05/06/2020 14:31

Don't let it get to you. I've been wearing a mask in supermarkets since March, before it all really kicked off here... yes I got weird looks and sniggers but who looks stupid now?!

Derbygerbil · 05/06/2020 14:31

The ignorant repetition “I’m not wearing a mask because it won’t protect me” is holding back a faster recovery for the country. The government foolishly allowed the perception that there is little point in wearing a mask because it does not protect the wearer to seep through our entire society purely because they had foolishly not kept in enough stocks for health workers in the event of a pandemic, and did not want the public taking stocks that medics would need.

This 100%

wanderings · 05/06/2020 14:32

it will become the new normal
The TEMPORARY new normal. Let's get that straight, every time that loathsome phrase "new normal" gets bandied around.

Nearlyalmost50 · 05/06/2020 14:35

I can't believe someone on here doesn't think this actually happened- men comment on women's appearance, right to go jogging, weight, clothing and all sorts in public, so naturally when women wear masks, some stupid man will pipe up a comment. My 16 year old went out for a walk with a big coat on yesterday and got shouted at.

As everyone has already said, it's kind of ironic, given being a man puts you at twice as much risk as women for getting corona, and dying from it.

If you think about it, why should women wear masks to protect those men when some men aren't prepared to wear them themselves and/or make rude comments to those women that do. I guess we just have to protect the sensible majority. Ugh. Everything that winds me up in one small scenario...

EvilPea · 05/06/2020 14:39

I have an issue that means my nose runs all the fucking time. So me wearing a mask is genuinely pointless. Yet I know I’m going to be judged for not wearing one

WikkiTikkiWoo · 05/06/2020 14:45

I had to take the tube earlier this week. I was really shocked at how few people were wearing masks

stickygotstuck · 05/06/2020 14:48

Backinthebox got it in one:

The ignorant repetition “I’m not wearing a mask because it won’t protect me” is holding back a faster recovery for the country. The government foolishly allowed the perception that there is little point in wearing a mask because it does not protect the wearer to seep through our entire society purely because they had foolishly not kept in enough stocks for health workers in the event of a pandemic, and did not want the public taking stocks that medics would need. Countries where mask-wearing was enforced or adopted early on have avoided the explosion in the number of Covid cases the UK has struggled under. The British Medical Association is at a loss as to why we did not adopt it as a strategy sooner, and why, if we are to adopt in now, we are not making it happen until the 15th June

Cattermole makes a very valid point on human nature in general:

Completely unrelated to Covid but when the hell did it become acceptable for grown ups to start taking the piss out of other grownups? Did we not grow out of that aged about 15??
I'm afraid many don't grow out of that, ever. I've seen parents behave similarly in the playground. No wonder their children do too

fuckoffImcounting · 05/06/2020 14:51

Tell them you don't speak Cuntish.

custodiandiscount · 05/06/2020 14:52

he's probably the kind of bell end that shouts at women in the street for jogging, riding bikes, driving, having tits that are too big, having tits that are too small, being pretty, being ugly, using fancy words, being thick, etc etc.

Eckhart · 05/06/2020 14:55

How about ignoring them?

WitchyMoo · 05/06/2020 14:57

I dont wear a mask and I have never nicked anyone that has
It's about 60% masks
40% non mask wearers here .
Essex
Its mandatory on the 15th june on all modes of public transport so I've bought some for all of us as 2 of my children get the bus to school / work

Soubriquet · 05/06/2020 14:58

I don’t wear one but I don’t begrudge others who do

I work in a supermarket and more people don’t wear one than those do.

The only one I was a bit HmmGrin over was someone who had obviously got her bra out of the drawer and wore that as a face mask. She had attached a piece of elastic to it so it fitted her head but the bra straps were dangling down beside her face.

I made sure I kept a straight face as I walked by and only laughed when I was out of ear shot.

sotiredofthislonelylife · 05/06/2020 14:59

@FlamedToACrisp

Tell them you're allergic to arseholes...then cough and say, "Oh, there it goes again."
Love it!!
HollowTalk · 05/06/2020 14:59

Why do people think doctors and nurses wear masks if it's pointless?

Aridane · 05/06/2020 15:04

Yep, just start coughing and mop your forehead

Aridane · 05/06/2020 15:05

I’m not wearing a mask and have noticed people who do seem to think they’re invincible and don’t need to social distance.

Complete opposite round my way - the mask wearers are the more cautious and social distance observers

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 05/06/2020 15:05

Don't know why some people don't believe you. I've not had comments but have had people point at look at me in the supermarket, very few people wear them here, less than 10% I give no shits. Let them get on with it. Also if I can't wash my hands of sanitizer them before taking it off I leave it on till I get home rather that touch my face with dirty hands.

bigdecisionstomake · 05/06/2020 15:09

No masks involved but...

Our village has very narrow pavements. Normally I would cross to the other side if, when out walking, someone was coming towards me on my side. This has seemed to be the tactic most people are adopting.

Yesterday I found myself in a situation where there was a man walking towards me on the pavement on my side plus a woman and two children single file on the pavement on the other side of the road.

There were no cars coming so I stepped out into the road a couple of paces to ensure there were a couple of metres between me and the man on the same pavement as me as he came towards me. Usually people nod a quick thank you and carry on but instead he waved his arms about dramatically and said "Oooh, I haven't got the lurgy you know" in a really sarcastic tone.

I didn't know what to say so just carried on but thought afterwards I ought to have said "no but I do...!"

I haven't yet warn a mask although I have one ready if I need to but all this is making me think twice.

Soubriquet · 05/06/2020 15:10

I’m not wearing a mask and have noticed people who do seem to think they’re invincible and don’t need to social distance.

Yeah I’ve noticed that too.

There’s me doing my picking, and those without masks tend to stand back and wait, those with masks, just barge up and reach over.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 05/06/2020 15:11

People are twats. In Spain you msut wear them in enclosed public spaces and on the street when you can't ensure social distancing. People are not allowed entry to shops etc without one.
If everyone wears one then it reduces transmission.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/06/2020 15:15

Complete opposite round my way - the mask wearers are the more cautious and social distance observers
Same round here. Most people I've seen aren't wearing masks but those who do are generally making way for people and trying to stay out of the way of others more than those who don't. I don't see many people wearing them at the moment inside, it's normally just me when I've ventured into a shop which hasn't been often.

qweryuiop · 05/06/2020 15:16

The only thing that gets me raising an eyebrow is the huge proportion of mask-wearers who are wearing them in ways which will not protect them. I would estimate 50% of people near me wearing a mask are wearing it (in order of ridiculousness, imo):

  • not covering their nose
  • on their chin
  • on their head
  • in their hand, while they have a smoke

Obviously the final 3 groups must know they're doing it wrong!

I can't and don't say anything though, as I have thus far chosen not to wear one as it triggers my asthma.
