It's now mandatory to wear face mask on public transport with exceptions for disability, young children etc.
This should have been done ages ago.
They also admitting face masks offers some protection

@Comefromaway my daughter is autistic and I've found a face mask of very fine translucent 100% silk x3 layers gives good coverage but it's not claustrophobic. It's also washable.

I've made mine, I found a pattern on Pinterest and bought the silk on eBay.

Its easier than cotton to breathe through and apparently the silk layers form an electrostatic barrier.

MadameMarie · 04/06/2020 19:42

And yet, your telling me that I need to 'defend' myself from members of the public because I am legally not wearing a mask on public transport. And you think that's something I should just put up with.

You can either ignore them or defend yourself but I know how people are, you'll get challenged if you're not following the rules on the bus or train.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 04/06/2020 19:43

*but it doesn't matter what people on mn say!!! Has the government said that you need to wear a badge or you'll be rounded up?

My grandparents were holocaust survivors. What we're going through, being advised to wear a mask? Not even close. Be offended but don't be offensive. Or ignorant*

FFS how complicated is this? People on here think that the medically exempt SHOULD wear a badge to avoid being verbally attacked by members of the public. I know the government have not said wear badges. I have no problem with carrying an exemption card to show to officials. But when people suggest that the exempt should wear a badge to protect themselves from attack by the public, and then go onto to suggest that is justified because there is a pandemic, do you honestly not see a problem with this?

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 19:43

@CoachBombay that's good to know

Derbygerbil · 04/06/2020 19:44

I'm confused. I thought we were trying to build up herd immunity?

Your quote is from 13th March... The Government’s policy changed abruptly on 16th March in the first of those announcements. If the Government was still aiming for herd immunity they wouldn’t be aiming to keep the R below 1! (Ie. Reducing transmission).

Given that 8% or so of us have antibodies, we’d need another 8 to 10 waves like the one we’ve experienced... Of we did that whilst the rest f the world managed to suppress it, not only would it kills 100,000s, it would destroy the economy... What Government could ever say... “ok folks, that 4 of our waves done, just 6 more to go... let’s go out and start coughing and get on with out 5th bout!”

JingsMahBucket · 04/06/2020 19:44

@GalesThisMorning some of these folks are willfully a whole mess. They're the equivalent of the protestors in the US who were storming the state capitals and some of them using enslaved black people imagery to say "We are not slaves". Offensive, ahistorical and racist as fuck. They're doing the same thing with invoking Nazism when it really does not apply. Terrible.

MadameMarie · 04/06/2020 19:45

I would like to see it acceptable to actually not be expected to go to work with a heavy cold as they always spread and one person taking a week ends up being whole office taking a day

The problem with offices is there's always the people who'll come in no matter what they've got so you can avoid getting ill, whether it's in the office or on the train or bus.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/06/2020 19:45

"Surely you need to remove the mask to cough, talk and sneeze? Wouldn't it get really damp and horrible very quickly?"
You can talk whilst wearing a mask (although you probably won't be heard if you whisper).

On no account should you take the mask off to cough or sneeze on public transport. That would defeat the object of it.You are wearing it to protect others from your coughing and sneezing. If the face covering is not disposable then you wash it at 60 degrees to get rid of your blooming germs.

MadameMarie · 04/06/2020 19:45

*can't

People on the internet say a lot of things. As they have no weight or power behind them you can freely ignore it. That's the actual difference between mums chatting shit on the internet and nazi Germany
JingsMahBucket · 04/06/2020 19:48

To add to what @NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite said about coughing and sneezing with your mask on:

YOU SHOULD STILL COUGH OR SNEEZE INTO YOUR ELBOW EVEN WITH YOUR MASK ON. This will definitely minimize the risk of spread even more.

ginghamstarfish · 04/06/2020 19:48

This should have happened many weeks ago, for anyone in enclosed spaces, then lockdown could have been less strict. It's a bit pathetic introducing it now ..., same as the overseas arrivals quarantine. I've been making masks for weeks, and have tried many different styles, some of them much better for breathability. I'm sure there are loads for sale online, but if anyone's interested - if you're buying, check it's made of cotton (or polycotton is ok) with at least two layers. The flat pleated style I think is not good, as it presses against the nose and mouth. The shaped curved front style is better, as is the 3D type/batwing type, but the best I think is the duckbill, where the fabric does not touch the mouth at all.

mausmausmaus · 04/06/2020 19:48

are some people here actually equating me wearing a badge that says 'I have asthma' so as not to attract unwarranted judgement for not covering my mouth and nose while it's a bit hot and theres a contagious viral disease going around to...the holocaust?

I have no words.

TheExterminatingAngel · 04/06/2020 19:49

@formerbabe

So it's whether they'd prefer to wear a badge or run that risk

Badges...yikes. Now what does that remind us of?

Absobloodylutely.
Blownaway1 · 04/06/2020 19:49

About time too. I can see this being extended to shops when more of them open, like a pp said - so they can do away with the 2m rule which is making everything seem very difficult to operate anywhere near normal.

With masks, more frequent hand washing, more WFH and people generally being aware of what they’re touching and their face etc I am starting to have a glimmer of hope that we can limp it through this winter and then hope against hope for a vaccine or treatment next year.

GalesThisMorning · 04/06/2020 19:50

@JingsMahBucket yes. Thanks for the reminder not to engage. You're right, nothing to be gained here.

Faraway20 · 04/06/2020 19:50

Mother - you also have the choice to move to somewhere else if you don't like it in the UK. Seeya.

ginghamstarfish · 04/06/2020 19:51

Re taking a mask off to cough or sneeze - seriously?? FFS we're all doomed.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 04/06/2020 19:52

@JingsMahBucket and @GalesThisMorning if you genuinely see no concern about the comments by MadameMarie, then I'm not going to waste further time explaining. I'm actually doubtful that either of you have read the thread - if you have, you certainly haven't understood it. There have been far more offensive comments made on here than any of those which make comparisons to Nazi Germany.

This thread and a few others over the last couple of days have at least settled one thing for me. People - as an anonymous collective - can rot as far as I'm concerned. I will continue to obey laws but that's it. Civic duty can take a run and jump. I don't care about taking steps to save lives - the world would be better off without a huge number of them.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/06/2020 19:53

"Shame Sharma didn’t have CV. Then the whole cabinet would have had to isolate and we would not have seen any of the useless wankers for 14 days."
I think they have all been social-distancing. Contacts would only require to self-isolate if they have been within 2 metres of each other for more than 15 minutes.

5MikesOut · 04/06/2020 19:53

I’m Jewish. I have no problem whatsoever with being required by law to wear a facemask during a pandemic. If I needed a badge to state why I couldn’t wear one I’d have no problem with that either. As others have said Nazi comparisons here are absolutely out of order and offensive. My DB is a Jew living in Germany. He has no issues whatsoever with wearing a face covering in shops and on trams/trains. He’s been wondering why the hell they’ve not been brought in over here up till this moment and why not in shops. Too many people have died. Too many more will die so this is no time to start looking for reasons why you can’t/shouldn’t have to do simple things to minimise the risk of spreading this virus.

MintyMabel · 04/06/2020 19:53

Who will be providing the masks?

Who provides hat and scarf in the winter?

bellinisurge · 04/06/2020 19:54

Before this announcement, I had to go to the pharmacist for something. They were selling masks for £1 each in batches of 5. Wonder if they put the price up.
Luckily, I made a bunch for us and some other family members.

megletthesecond · 04/06/2020 19:55

I'm wearing a mask even to collect my shopping. I don't use public transport or go in shops.

However even if everyone isn't able to wear one it'll still work like vaccinations and reduce the spread of the virus. I'm not going to condemn people not wearing them.

I tried running in one the other week to see it if could work at parkrun when it starts again. Was a quite hot, DS rolled his eyes a bit Hmm.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/06/2020 19:56

"Re taking a mask off to cough or sneeze - seriously?? FFS we're all doomed."
Yep, my earlier post where I mentioned people having no common sense was definitely spot on.
