It's now mandatory to wear face mask on public transport with exceptions for disability, young children etc.
This should have been done ages ago.
They also admitting face masks offers some protection

No one is actually obliged to wear hats in winter. Besides which many charities provide those. The government are saying we must wear something or effectively lose our jobs (if we cannot get to work) and haven't provided it. Fucking stupid

GalesThisMorning · 04/06/2020 19:56

@BamboozledandBefuddled Nope. Comparing any of this shit to the Holocaust is still pretty high on the old offense rating.

Glad you're going to carry on obeying the law

Raaaa · 04/06/2020 19:57

Well I'm glad I don't use public transport ..

snowballer · 04/06/2020 19:58

The law also makes it compulsory to wear clothing in public but you don't expect the state to provide your clothes 🙄

MitziK · 04/06/2020 19:59

'So why aren't you wearing your mask?'

'I had a bit of trouble breathing, so I thought I'd take it off to test my lungs for a bit'

Comefromaway · 04/06/2020 19:59

I think ds would find the potential confrontation of someone challenging why he wasn't wearing one too tricky to claim exemption and lets face it as a 16 year old lad people are automatically going to assume he's deliberately flouting rules if our local facebook groups are anything to go by. The vitriol towards teenage lads at the best of times isn't nice and when ds feels threatened his language isn't the best.

We will just need to work on alternatives for September.

scheffsm · 04/06/2020 19:59

Ffs, no-one is asking you to forever cover your face in public. You are being advised you must wear a face covering on public transport in England from 15th June. Get it right!

Exactly. It won't be forever. Once the situation has stabilized the requirement will be removed. We've been wearing them in the country I live in for months and in all enclosed public spaces, not just public transport. I posted a longer post about this upthread so won't repeat myself but what I will repeat is that face masks are being ditched here on 15th June except for public transport where they will remain until further notice.
We have been told repeatedly for weeks by our government that facemasks will be compulsory everywhere until a vaccine is found. A vaccine hasn't been found yet, no where close and the masks are going, everywhere except public transport.

There is far too much dramatic language going on - from governments and from people discussing the situation on line.
When you are whipping up anxiety about measures going on forever please look at how other countries are gradually removing restrictions when they feel it is safe.

I hate to think of people here getting upset and worried about restrictions going on forever. I felt like this just a month ago but things are changing all the time.

If you don't want to do it, then don't use public transport. You have that choice.

snowballer · 04/06/2020 20:00

I honestly don't know how some people manage to run their lives without someone telling them what do do and giving them the money to pay for it at every single stage.

I'm the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor. I'm not offended by the Nazi Germany comparisons. I think any removal of freedoms should be eyed with suspicion.

4 March: Face masks do nothing. Don’t wear them.

17 April: Face masks do more harm than good.

11 May: Wearing face masks is an added precaution.

4 June: Face masks compulsory. “Why wouldn’t you want to do the right thing?”

NB The ‘science’ on masks has NOT changed one iota.

Crosswordocelot · 04/06/2020 20:01

Mask wearing seems quite standard in other countries (where SARS, MERS were prevalent) and you see crowds of people wearing them, (I see japanese tourists in london wearing them here too) but I wonder whether there is a large contingent of people there that dont go out or dont use public transport because they can't (for whatever reason) wear a mask?

This. Put your big girl pants on and take some responsibility.

@5MikesOut

I’m Jewish. I have no problem whatsoever with being required by law to wear a facemask during a pandemic. If I needed a badge to state why I couldn’t wear one I’d have no problem with that either. As others have said Nazi comparisons here are absolutely out of order and offensive. My DB is a Jew living in Germany. He has no issues whatsoever with wearing a face covering in shops and on trams/trains. He’s been wondering why the hell they’ve not been brought in over here up till this moment and why not in shops. Too many people have died. Too many more will die so this is no time to start looking for reasons why you can’t/shouldn’t have to do simple things to minimise the risk of spreading this virus.
Exactly. It's just one of them things we need to do to protect vulnerable people at the moment.
BamboozledandBefuddled · 04/06/2020 20:05

Just for accuracy, can somebody please show where I've made any references to the Holocaust - offensive or otherwise?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/06/2020 20:07

You are being advised you must wear a face covering on public transport in England from 15th June....from June 15th until????

If you don't want to do it, then don't use public transport. You have that choice you’re right we are all just using public transport for fun. I pay £200 a month to ride the rail to see the beautiful sights of inner London, must stop that!

GalesThisMorning · 04/06/2020 20:10

@fomerbabe we're not entirely free though. That's not how society works. At one point we were free to smoke in pubs, and now we're not. So many examples like this. Did that restriction bother you too?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/06/2020 20:10

Faraway20 it’s a shame you struggle to form a cohesive argument in the face of debate. What’s your next line “talk to the hand”?!

JingsMahBucket · 04/06/2020 20:11

@BamboozledandBefuddled
This thread and a few others over the last couple of days have at least settled one thing for me. People - as an anonymous collective - can rot as far as I'm concerned. I will continue to obey laws but that's it. Civic duty can take a run and jump. I don't care about taking steps to save lives - the world would be better off without a huge number of them.

Ahhhh, there it is. The truth finally comes out. You're being selfish just like those supposed "no masks/no stay at home orders/freedom protestors" in the US. Got it.

5MikesOut · 04/06/2020 20:11

I'm the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor. I'm not offended by the Nazi Germany comparisons. I think any removal of freedoms should be eyed with suspicion

I’m Jewish and don’t agree with you here at all. The face covering law is for everyone regardless of their religion /race and is to keep as many people as possible free from a virus that may end up killing them. This isn’t like requiring Jews to wear an armband to identify them as Jewish so they could be more easily targeting for abuse or to make it easier to haul them off to a concentration camp and gas them. We are not talking loss of freedom when it comes to face masks. We are talking about risk management in a 100year pandemic.

MeadowHay · 04/06/2020 20:13

Why do people keep going on and on about it being a choice to get public transport? Who the hell is choosing to go on a jolly bus ride atm? The only people who will be getting public transport have no other options. I work an office job and the only way I can get to the office is via bus. We are working from home now but we have a rota of skeleton staff for s small number of Jobs that cannot be done outside of the office. About half of our colleagues have never volunteered to go on it. I have been going every fortnight or so, on very empty buses. I am autistic and have sensory issues and GAD, I cannot wear a face covering without panic attack. I will no longer be volunteering to go in. However good will seems to be reducing given the fact that half of my colleagues have never volunteered to go in and management are struggling to fill the rota now. So I assume they will force everyone to go on the rota soon. But I don't know how I will do it because I cannot wear a face covering for my 1hr commute each way without becoming ill with panic attacks etc and I equally cannot deal with abuse or harassment from other members of the public without becoming ill with panic attacks etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2020 20:18

I live in Germany, where masks have been compulsory from age 6+ for several weeks in shops, taxis, stations, public transport etc
Even at my hairdresser, I had to keep my mask on the whole time

When the schools reopened, masks were optional for staff and kids

Noone made a drama out of it; we just got on with it

I don't know if MN is typical of the UK atm, but the drama is surprising

Faraway20 · 04/06/2020 20:19

Mother I'm not debating with you, I'm amused by you.

formerbabe · 04/06/2020 20:19

Im not suggesting it's the same. I just think people in general seem scarily willing to accept our freedoms being removed.

mausmausmaus · 04/06/2020 20:24

I don't think being asked to wear a mask to help stop the spread of an infectious disease is exactly a removal of freedom.

the hysteria really is on both sides.

MintyMabel · 04/06/2020 20:25

I just think people in general seem scarily willing to accept our freedoms being removed.

Yes, amazing what people will accept to protect the vulnerable in a global pandemic.
