Are you still food shopping as infrequently as possible?

Just wondering really who is still keeping away from supermarkets?

I was going strictly only once a week and making dinner with whatever I had in. But before lockdown I'd go 2-3 times a week to top up.

Yes once a fortnight roughly with a milk and bread stop locally. Using click and collect where possible and haven't set foot in a big supermarket since early April now.

raspberryk · 04/06/2020 19:39

We usually go about every 10 days with an odd top up, depending on eating out, when we have the kids etc. I haven't been able to get enough to last the week as we don't have a large enough fridge freezer, and we don't usually cater so many meals at home. I have bursary vouchers from uni which buys my main lunch 3 days per week, kids have free lunches and 3 days a week have breakfast and dinner at school. They also have 1 night with my gran so that's dinner and breakfast they're away for.
So I go now about once a week but we seem forever in the local tesco express picking up milk, bread and things we forgot/things to make a meal out of leftovers as I am just not used to buying such large amounts in one go, have no storage and I have also noticed the dates are really short in supermarkets at the moment.

I am really happy with shopping less, it’s making me think ahead about meals & planning accordingly. I’ve realised that I don’t really like shopping & the less often I have to go the better. I intend to carry on this way.

Tropical2 · 04/06/2020 19:43

Yes, one big shop once a fortnight.

TheGreatWave · 04/06/2020 19:43

I don't often go to a big supermarket though, just the small Tesco for top ups with the occasional other shop.

Nihiloxica · 04/06/2020 19:47

No. I can't see the point.

puffinandkoala · 04/06/2020 19:49

To be honest I never did shop as infrequently as possible because I thought going into a shop for a few items on foot at quiet times was better than driving to a large supermarket, having to queue, buy the whole shop at once which takes a while and then driving home. As an example I went into M&S last night and took no more than 5 minutes.

We also have a garage Spar near us which means we can get bread/milk easily within a 5 min walk of the house and saves a trip to the main shops. I would have gone for something like Milk & More but they closed to new customers very early on.

There is a farm shop about 6 miles away which does click and collect but in the end we didn't need it. Also a zero waste shop which closed for a bit but reopened and is now open for its normal hours but I suspect though I've not been to look at there are always queues outside as they will only let 2 people in at once and the nature of it means you can't just grab and go as you need to fill your containers.

CornedBeef451 · 04/06/2020 19:53

@Drivingdownthe101 I was thinking more of shopping.

DDs friend's parents are happily popping to the shops multiple times a day for treats and booze despite also getting a big Tesco delivery. The DH is back at work, neither of them seem aware of social distancing and seemed bemused when I said we were still not going out.

It made our first garden visit very stressful, I politely refused a drink as I'd brought my own, declined to share a bowl of crisps and was horrified when the DH squeezed past me to get inside. It was the nearest I'd been to anyone I didn't live with since March!

DB's family haven't changed their behaviour at all. Two adults and four teens in the house and they've all been out constantly.

Hormonecrazyhell · 04/06/2020 20:17

1 delivery every 7/9 days here, missing Aldi, the market and Lidl, but as we’re in the vulnerable group I’m not going into the shops yet.

ifonly4 · 04/06/2020 20:46

I used to pop into supermarket every day after work as it saved using the car for a main shop. Now doing one main shop and a top, so gone from five to two shops.

Much preferred my old environmental friendly, which probably kept me fitter carrying bags up an incline, but it's just not worth queuing, the one way system and being patient while people dither.

ballsdeep · 04/06/2020 20:49

Indiana big ship every two weeks. If we need anything we will go to local Tesco express, but I really try not to. I think lockdown has made me much more good savvy. I now buy a huge sack of pots to last , where as before I used to buy the ready made mash

user1487194234 · 04/06/2020 20:51

Not really
We do one big shop a week but I am in every day or so picking up fresh stuff

VaTeLaverLesMains · 04/06/2020 20:51

Not been to a shop since lockdown, I'll be like Mr Bean goes shopping Once This Is All Over..

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/06/2020 20:52

I've been going twice a week since lockdown began (I don't have a car and can only carry so much), and popping to my local shop for milk/bread when needed.

Sunnydays123456 · 04/06/2020 20:53

Shop
Little and often

Bluewater1 · 04/06/2020 20:53

Yes, used to pop in most days, now I do one weekly shop only

shinynewapple2020 · 04/06/2020 20:54

We are doing click n collect every 2 weeks and top up shops in between . Shopping less because we aren't in work so not needing all the bits we had for packed lunches and DS moved to live with his GF at beginning of lock down so only me and DH. Having one or two takeaways a week too on delivery.

bengalcat · 04/06/2020 20:54

I go weekly as per normal precovid and top up as needed at our local mini Waitrose at the bottom of our street . Haven’t changed my habits .

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/06/2020 20:56

We get one online delivery a week and I go to Lidl once a week. We are shopping for our family of 4, the in-laws and topping up a neighbour and a friend who are shielding so the 80 item online limit isn’t enough for the week. I queue for about 20 minutes outside Lidl but it’s calm once you’re in.

I’m a key worker and pass several small corner shops on my way to and from work. The only day there’s not been queues outside was yesterday when it was pouring with rain - I think that illustrates that a lot of the visits for these shops aren’t essential.

Lovelydovey · 04/06/2020 20:56

Used to do a weekly online shop with 2-3 trips to supermarket for odd items in between (and more as often used to pop in to buy breakfast or lunch at work). Now only a weekly online shop (and was fortnightly until v recently).

ginsparkles · 04/06/2020 20:58

Yes. I do click and collect and very rarely go into supermarkets. I haven't been to any shops other than when I absolutely have to

Redcrayons · 04/06/2020 21:01

Just once a week to a supermarket and one visit to the local bakery to get some cakes on Saturday morning.

Used to do one big shop with a couple of tops ups in the week. I’m going to try and keep to it when everything goes back to normal.

TimeWastingButFun · 04/06/2020 21:08

Yes, I'm getting quite good at going once a week now and I'm throwing less away as I used to pop in to the shops most days to get things on a whim when I had enough at home already.

Crunchymum · 04/06/2020 21:11

Yes. Before I'd go everyday (it wasnt out of the ordinary to go more than once sometimes - we live less than 2 minutes from three supermarkets and I rarely write a list so inevitably forget something or would pop out if the fancy took me for anything, supermarket closer than little indie shop!!)

Now we are good with one online shop and one trip for tops-us [DC is on shielding list, hence to deliver slot!!!]

Oblomov20 · 04/06/2020 21:26

We seem to be going quite a lot. And doing big shops. And smaller ones too. We eat so much. 2 teenage boys eat tonnes.

There is NO delivery options from any supermarket. I've Been unable to get a home delivery from any supermarket since Corona started.
