Why can't zoos open?

Zoos have been told they need to stay shut indefinitely yet we can go to Ikea or to buy a car Hmm

They are outside, indoor areas can be closed, food outlets takeaway only, same as parks & beaches so why can't they open?

I assume it is a financial decision by the government but I don't understand. Who knows what will happen to the animals if they can't get revenue.

@Ginfordinner @lynsey91 I've been on their website & they're not selling tickets yet but I've signed up to their mailing list so I'll know when they do.

Until DD is back at school we'll be doing a tour of UK zoos & wildlife parks 🥳

Thank you for the heads up @Nquartz. I will sign up then.

So either the government has an issue with animals or an issue with children enjoying themselves. Given that play areas and all other childrens activities are also closed, I know which one I think it is.

Neither. It’s safety, pure and simple. This kind of thinking - that children are being demonised - is endemic on MN right now and it simply isn’t the case. Children over the world have had the same, or far more stringent, lockdown circumstances. You just need to give it time.

Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia is open, after some months of closure, as are a number of other zoos in the country. (For the poster that asked.)

Daisyhoney · 13/06/2020 09:44

Well done Bengal we're hoping to get tickets for Colchester Zoo next week. Fingers crossed!!!

EnlightenedOwl · 13/06/2020 10:46

I couldn't get Chester Zoo tickets but did get tickets for Knowsley Safari. I'm a NT member but can't get any tickets to visit

Floatyboat · 13/06/2020 14:08

@EnlightenedOwl

What national trust places in the northwest are open?

EnlightenedOwl · 13/06/2020 16:09

Parks and Estates only not the houses - Lyme and Dunham Massey - oh and Quarry Bank as well. Not been able to get a ticket though - its strictly ticket only book ahead and always sold out when I try. No member priority given.

Floatyboat · 13/06/2020 22:53

@EnlightenedOwl

Same experience here, just checking I wasn't missing any. They need to open far more. I suspect most people booking are members.

The only thing I've managed to get is the Knowsley tickets although going to try for Bolton Abbey in a few weeks

I had to wait in a queue for 5 hours but I got tickets for Yorkshire Wildlife Park so am happy.

So many people moaning on their facebook page though. It's pretty obvious their website was struggling to cope with the amount of people using it and, at the end of the day, it's hardly the end of the world is it?

Ginfordinner · 14/06/2020 09:27

Do you know if their loos will be open lynsey91?

lynsey91 · 14/06/2020 11:17

@Ginfordinner I hadn't even thought about that. Me and DH are lucky in that neither of us need the loo that often and can easily do a 6/7 hour visit without needing to go.

I have looked at their website and it says that staff will be monitoring queues at the toilet blocks so, obviously, they are open.
