What was their circumstance? I'm curious to see what the "real" picture looks like.

I know of two people:

  1. My friends father who was in his mid-70s but in ailing health and my understanding is he had more than one underlying health condition. He probably had another 5 years in him though.
  1. My friends grandmother who contracted it in her care home. No underlying health conditions, but she was 99.

work colleague- late 40s, not overweight, non smoker, had asthma but otherwise healthy. Saw them weeks before and they were in good health
Another person known through work - late 50s, overweight, had angina and some health conditions but still active, played sport, worked FT and not "unwell" in a sense that you would think of them as at risk of dying soon IYSWIM
Really saddened and shocked at both instances

A lad who went to school with died age 48. Was in Spain and flew back whilst Spain was locking down. Not sure on health issues but some said he wasn’t looking in great shape a couple of years ago

whiteroseredrose · 30/05/2020 20:41

DM's friend's DH. He was mid 70s BAME with a history of alcoholism. Covid19 contracted in hospital after a hip operation. Hip broken when he fell over probably while drunk.

It's changed my DM's attitude though, now that she knows someone that has died. She was previously cross about the inconvenience.

combatbarbie · 30/05/2020 20:41

Our cleaner at work, was admitted to hospital before lockdown for what appeared to be a minor issue, contracted covid and died within a week 😢

combatbarbie · 30/05/2020 20:42

Forgot to say, she was late 50/early 60s generally fit and well.

JacobReesMogadishu · 30/05/2020 20:45

I know someone. He was in his 60s, a bit overweight. But seemed healthy.

iVampire · 30/05/2020 20:48

A close friend’s mother. She was over 70, but in extremely good health and active. A complete shock, everyone thought she’d got another couple of decades ahead of her Sad

Toilenstripes · 30/05/2020 20:50

Fil, 77, in hospital with cancer. It happened very quickly, just a few days.

MakeLemonade · 30/05/2020 20:51

Family friend, almost 70, MND as underlying condition.

MaryBerrysBomberJacket · 30/05/2020 20:53

53, male, a bit overweight but nothing else. Spent 4.5 weeks on a ventilator after a week on a ward before nothing else could be done.

Just heard of a former colleague, 39, mild asthma but fit and healthy, ventilated for 3 weeks before kidney and lung failure resulted in her death.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/05/2020 20:53

Colleague, probably slightly overweight, late 50s with asthma 🙁 it’s been truly awful @ work, quite a few colleagues very unwell and emotionally difficult (nhs).

DKanin · 30/05/2020 20:55

Friends dad - 70s, caught it in hospital and he was only there because they'd botched his hip surgery the first time round. It's really sad and I feel terrible for my friend.

Neighbour - early 40s, slim, fit and no health issues. Not sure where he caught it but must have been whilst going about everyday life

Choir friend - mid 40s, no health conditions as far as anyone knows, he was active and seemed well. Not sure where he caught it either but the rest of his family developed it too although I think they all recovered

Family friend of a friend - mid 80s, was fit enough to go skiing and became ill on his return, this was at the start when there were people who'd just been skiing in Italy getting ill afterwards

cptartapp · 30/05/2020 20:57

ging no such thing as 'slight' diabetes. You're either diabetic or you're not. Diabetics are several times more likely to be affected by cardiovascular disease, strokes and heart attacks, by virtue of their diagnosis alone, which may explain the high number who have died due to Covid.
As a nurse that does basic spot health checks on people, very many are living with health conditions without symptoms. There are hundreds of thousands of people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension etc who have no clue, pathologists will tell you the same, and I suspect many of those previously well who have sadly died did actually have issues yet to be diagnosed.

WotnoPasta · 30/05/2020 22:37

2 of DHs relatives. Female 80s, multiple health issues, in hospital long term, caught and died there.
Male, late 70s. Lung disease, no idea how caught it.

changedmynameforlockdown · 30/05/2020 22:43

84 year old neighbour, admitted to hospital with pneumonia and thought to have acquired covid in hospital , died 3 weeks into lock down

wheresmymojo · 30/05/2020 22:48

A neighbour - 61 year old woman. I don't know whether she had any underlying conditions but I do know she went zip lining through the Amazon last year so if she did they weren't serious

A friend's sister - 43 year old mother of 3 young children. Not sure of underlying conditions but she had a very high BMI so I guess diabetes is possible.

Both very tragic.

I don't know them but two other people died in our small village, all I know about them is that they were in their 80s.

PasserbyEffect · 30/05/2020 22:54

Why do people think of "underlying health conditions" as being the exception rather than the rule? Most people of "a certain age" take a few pills daily to keep underlying health conditions under control.
Being 100% healthy is a very transient state when you look at the full length of a human life.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/05/2020 23:05

DD's fathers stepdad, he was early 60s but had Parkinson's , was a smoker, and was very overweight with T2 diabetes. Contracted Cv in hospital, was released into community, then readmitted and died of cv.

There is a parent at our school with no underlying conditions, 40 years old,, 3 kids. He's been in icu for 10 weeks now and has been on the cusp of death for many weeks. He has kidney failure, 3 holes in his lungs , has had sepsis, and his wife had been told that if he survives he will likely have some brain damage and will need oxygen for life.

I know a few people who have had it and had mild cases although did report feeling very unwell for a week or so.

Sparklingplasters · 30/05/2020 23:07

Colleagues best mate, he was 28, no pre existing medical conditions. Friends Dad, he caught coronavirus in hospital getting treatment for a fracture. Friends mum, 72 caught it in the community, no previous

blissfulllife · 30/05/2020 23:19

Uncle early 80's with asbestosis

historyrocks · 30/05/2020 23:29

79 yr old caught it in hospital after having fallen and broken his leg.

Horehound · 30/05/2020 23:31

I don't know a single person who has even had it

FourPlasticRings · 30/05/2020 23:33

Terminal cancer patient in his seventies

Jenasaurus · 30/05/2020 23:35

A paramedic aged 51. no underlying health conditions, died on his birthday in the hospital he worked.

A 21 year old nursery worker, waiting for a liver transplant, although in January she was well, caught a virus that damaged her liver, she was transfered to Kings, caught the CV and died before she could have the transplant.

Another paramedic (I work for an ambulance trust so know a few colleagues that have had it) he died aged 38, no underlying health conditions.

GiantPinesAhem · 30/05/2020 23:51

Cptartapp I'm having so much trouble getting anyone I explain this to to understand it!!! People can have underlying illnesses for years before be diagnosed- and many more are never diagnosed!
