No space at school

This is outing so have NC.

Our school is a large primary 3 form per year.

They've offered alternate weeks starting from the 8th June for year groups.

We were undecided on sending our DC back.

However we got an email yesterday saying they were at full capacity for key worker and Nursery R, Y1 and Y6 and can't accept anymore children!

Is this allowed?

I love to play ‘Teacher bashing bingo’ on MN.
I especially enjoy when posters do the old ‘my hamster’s, neighbour’s, second cousin is a teacher and they’ve spent every day since lockdown grooming their fanny hair and smoking crystal meth.’ As if that is representative of the whole profession.

If we are all feckless, over sensitive, lazy and shit - don’t have us back. Over throw the education system and do it yourself.

PrivateD00r · 31/05/2020 08:14

OP, what an odd post! Have you honestly not saw or read anything over the last few weeks about schools having to social distance? Or that some people still are unable to work outside of their home due to having health conditions?

I honestly cannot believe that you did not pick up on this Confused

It really never occurred to you that the schools cannot accommodate everyone whilst maintaining social distancing?

You honestly thought that when you responded saying you did not require a school place, that they would hold it open for you anyway, just in case you decide to send dc some day?

I am truly baffled.

PurplePansy05 · 31/05/2020 08:20

Well if they sent a questionnaire first before making any decisions and you said "No" then they didn't make arrangements to cater for your children. If you were unsure, surely common sense was to say "Yes", in that case, the school would do their besr to cater for your children. If you then changed your mind it would have been easier for the school to care for less children in present circumstances. I don't get the outrage at all and the school doesn't deserve to be critised here.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 15:10

OfTheNight, like there are so many different teachers, there are so many different parents too. There are horrible teachers as well as horrible parents. I just don't find it fun to read comment like that. Some parents are nasty. And generalise teachers and complain. But there's teacher like you too. Instead of pointing out what certain people said isn't right and just decides the whole thread is teacher bashing. People like you will give teacher a bad name, imo.

CallmeAngelina · 31/05/2020 15:13

What do you mean, "people like you," with regard to OftheNight? she makes a perfectly valid point. Yet you make a blanket decision that she must be a bad example of a teacher based on it.
Kind of proves the point of school staff on these threads. Any excuse to take a jab.

pfrench · 31/05/2020 15:24

People like you will give teacher a bad name

Think you meant teacherS - it being a plural.

See - not lazy. I give feedback on submitted work.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 15:28

The one's just to make a snide comment like "teacher bashing bingo". What else?
There maybe some parents who just hate teachers in general, but there are always others who are just a worried parents. I for one, was always thought myself as teacher worshipper. I do get annoyed by parents generalising teachers, but also get annoyed by teachers generalising parents. What is important is mutual understanding and respect.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 15:34

pfrench, thank you. I am non native English speaker, I do tend to make those silly mistakes. But if it makes you feel better correcting my petty grammar mistakes. Grin People don't tend to do that, but if they do, it will only help me, so I am grateful.

CallmeAngelina · 31/05/2020 15:42

It's not teacher versus parent. Most teachers are also parents, after all.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 15:50

So why did you think I was digging at teachers in general? I just said, teachers like you, directed at one particular teacher/poster. Yet you said I made a blanket decision. Imo, she is bad example of teacher. Instead of making her opinion heard, she made the assumption the whole thread is intended to be teacher bashing.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 31/05/2020 16:05

@pfrench - OFSTED would be proud

Iggi999 · 31/05/2020 16:08

Somewhereinthesky you have possibly not read the thread after thread after thread that has been on here since lockdown, complaining about teachers.

MGMidget · 31/05/2020 16:10

Try contacting your local authority? I would have thought that if you insist they must be obliged to find you a place although it might not be with your child's existing classmates. I would keep pushing though as you have changed your mind before school started and your child is still registered at the school and they didn't stipulate a deadline or warn you couldn't change your mind! You could also say you want to be kept on their list because someone who said they were attending might also change their mind the other way!

The school are obviously struggle to manage the demand with the space and teachers available and trying hard to turn you away but I suspect if you make a fuss they must accommodate you.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 31/05/2020 16:13

@Somewhereinthesky - well there have been some horrible things said on various threads. Therefore quite a few MN teacher(parents) will now stand up for themselves probably in ways they wouldn't have done in the past.

As teachers we have to follow the school rules - therefore no Zoom. My school rule is that lessons have to be fully on line and recorded.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 16:22

Iggi, I have. But there are always very vocal minority who shout out abuse against teachers. I even wonder if many of them are even genuine. As I don't think like some of the parent posters who think all the teachers are inadequate and lazy, I don't want teachers to think all the parents are ungrateful and don't understand how hard they are working.
Once someone start shouting teacher bashing, it will shut down every meaningful debate. Yes, there are horrible posters who enjoy it, but not all of us parents. After all, this is a parenting site, we tend to talk about our children's education, and people post when there is worry.

CallmeAngelina · 31/05/2020 16:44

people post when there is worry.

Absolutely no issues whatsoever with answering worries or reassuring. That's part of the job, after all. But the critical nature of "teacher-bashing" threads that MN has continued to host, even when the most vile ones are reported, have done a huge amount of damage to morale amongst teachers on here, to a profession that is haemorrhaging staff as it is. And the only people who are going to suffer from that are "parents" and their children.

Somewhereinthesky · 31/05/2020 17:04

Callme, I do understand, and I do wish that stops too. Fortunately, I do have rather good experience with teachers at my dc's school, as well as some teachers I have known for years on MN on education board. So, to see the threads about teachers vs parents here or AIBU do break my heart.

cabbageking · 31/05/2020 18:06

The school does not need to accommodate you.
If they have space they might but if they do not have to take you.

cabbageking · 31/05/2020 18:07

You may wish to look at their risk assessment for Covid return which should be on their website. You can see the issues they face and their actions.

cyclingmad · 01/06/2020 19:00

So you said no, now changed your mind and complaining about and also feel they should of told you properly. It doesn't take a genius to know that space is limited, not everyone can go so if you say no you wont be able to just change your mind.

You made your decision, live with it.

Unbelievable ignorance that you expect a school to just be able to accommodate you changing your mind what with everything they have had to in terms of planning for it.

PinkDiamond1 · 01/06/2020 19:22

Think people seriously need to chill out a bit and not get so stressed.

Rightly or wrongly I said No - thinking I could change my mind - as a lawyer I'm not as thick as two short planks - the majority of people on our class group said no.

Based on that evidence I thought well I don't want the school to plan for me but as most of the class said no - then we should be ok to change our minds.

Lo and behold over 50% of the class it looks like is going back so now they have no space!!

It's done - just quit having a go at me every two seconds - seriously.

"Where's your Clapham!?"
Unfortunately, common sense isn't common 😶

BubblyBluePebbles · 01/06/2020 19:46

This post has been going on for dayssss! (Intentional miss-spelling, so no need for corrections lol).

OP - And you're a Lawyer!???
If so, perfect example of some people being 'book smart' but not having common sense.

Had our Headteacher emailing, recalling emails and making calls to parents this last weekend trying to sort out the logistical nightmare of all of this. People need to appreciate Teachers, NHS staff, general public sector key worker staff and all keyworker staff (including supermarket workers, etc). There are not many countries where you can rock up and receive an education or medical treatment without paying for it up front/beforehand. Check yourself and be grateful. We are privileged to live in the U.K.

To all of the teachers on MN - you're all doing an absolutely fantastic job. I appreciate you all. Thank you! 💐🍷

PinkDiamond1 · 01/06/2020 19:51

People love to make assumptions without knowing anyone's story.

Who knows where I came from to get to where I got to?! Certainly wasn't a place of privilege.

The thread can carry as far as I'm concerned - people seem to want to use it to randomly bitch at me.
