Ponoka7, our death was in Liverpool and one of their relatives also had Covid. One caught it in a hospital and the other a care home, both totally unacceptable. All the other Covid cases I know of are just outside London where I live.

I can't believe some people are suggesting Mumsnetters are on here making this up. I can see how, but can't really fathom why, some people are untouched by Coronavirus. I have a good friend who lives 300 metres away from me who said she doesn't know of anyone who has had it, but then I reckon I know of about 20 cases within my family, extended family, school and work.

Once it gets close to you and yours, you will see the whole thing very differently and take it much more seriously.

I’m a physio - mostly community based usually. I’ve been redeployed along with lots of musculoskeletal physios who usually treat out-patients to increase the rehab provided to In-patients on the wards. I have worked alongside other nurses and therapists who have been redeployed from day hospitals, podiatry and the posture and mobility service. It is very much a team effort to keep the discharges going throughout this. Lots of us are working outside of our normal, area to work, in very different patterns of work to normal. There was obviously no time to consult on this - we just did as we were asked and have been as flexible as possible.

Our ward manager, deputy ward manager, Physio team lead and over 50% of ward staff have tested positive for Covid19. Some have been off for over 5 weeks, two had to be admitted. The lucky ones were back after a fortnight.

Admin staff are indeed catching up with long overdue archiving tasks.

Our health board reported yesterday about another 2 staff members who have lost their life to this virus.

It’s not all rosy, I can assure you.

poshme · 28/05/2020 15:17

The thing about the excess deaths number- how many are because people couldn't access hospital treatment for non-COVID problems?

People aren't going to hospital when they should be (stroke/heart attack etc) or getting their cancer treatment.
Not all the excess numbers are COVID.

MillyMollyMardy · 28/05/2020 15:23

OhTheRoses I'm a dentist I have been answering e-mails from my patients, telephoning and advising them, dropping off prescriptions and temporary filling material, referring them to the hubs.
Trying to follow the latest advice and guidelines and making modifications to the surgery to ensure we can follow them. Trying to order PPE (but that is a whole other thread) so that when we are permitted to see patients again we are ready.
All my staff are up to date with their CPD, our protocols are updated.
All my staff volunteered to be redeployed but as we are in the SW that wasn't required.

Lordamighty · 28/05/2020 20:03

I am in the Northwest & have a relative in a Care Home, they have been absolutely brilliant. Regular temperature checks & now Covid19 testing. Couldn’t have been more caring. Loads of PPE, staff going above & beyond the call of duty. 👏

Nuffalready · 29/05/2020 00:40

Not a dentist, but the dentists employed in my Trust (which includes a large dental hospital/ many trainees & staff) have been working shifts in ITU giving expert oral care to intubated patients. They have been amazing - cheerful, positive and working way outside their "normal" comfort zone.

OhTheRoses · 29/05/2020 07:03

That's good Nuffalready There are no dental hospitals here and all the dentists are closed. My neighbour broke a tooth and yes the dentist did help but with an additional emergency charge of £250. CAMHS here is accepting no new referrals except the acute emergencies through A&E. My local hospital is evidently very quiet and all routine ops are cancelled. The orthopaedic consultant opposite has been at home a lot.

Bluewarbler27 · 29/05/2020 10:31

I don’t know anyone personally who has died. I have one friend who has had it and was in hospital for a few weeks. She’s under 50 and in good health.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 13:38

Where in the country do you live, Bluewarbler, and do you erm...have very few friends?

With over 60,000 deaths now in the UK, that is around 1 in a 1000 people have died so far in the UK.

Most people know far more than 1,000 people - think about the people you were at primary and secondary school with, their parents, your family, your family friends, people you live near, people you work with or old work colleagues, university friends if you went to university, your dcs and their classmates and families if you have dcs, etc.

Most people almost certainly do know someone who has died of this.

IrelandsIndustry · 30/05/2020 13:45

I live in London, I know several people who have had it, but all have had it so mildly they say they'd have gone to work had they not known it was covid.

My neighbour in her 70s had it and was in bed for a few days but is now fine.

OhTheRoses · 30/05/2020 13:47

effingterrified we live in London. My organisation has 1000 employees; two have had it. I do not regard them as people I know as I have never met them. Likewise only one of the 25 girls in my class at primary school is in my address book. 55-60 years on I doubt I would recognise the rest and am quite sure most live hours away from me.

I know of people who claim to have had it but I do not know them.

majesticallyawkward · 30/05/2020 14:43

Most people know far more than 1,000 people

Most people directly know more than 1000 people? Are you in contact with every person you've ever known?

In my life I've probably been connected to well over 1000 but know far less. Unless you count anyone you have ever been in a room with.

1 in a 1000 is a fairly small number in terms of the number of dead vs the total population.

Derbygerbil · 30/05/2020 14:52

Most people know far more than 1,000 people

Confused I know “of” more than 1,000 people, of i included everyone at work or friends of friends that I’m vaguely aware of, but I certainly don’t know 1,000 people, as even acquaintances, let alone “far more”... and I’m not a hermit! I expect the vast majority of people don’t!

Spillinteas · 30/05/2020 14:52

I live in the northwest and dont know any body that’s had it OR died with it. Yes I have lots of friends, work colleagues ect..

Derbygerbil · 30/05/2020 14:54

Or do you mean that know of people who died in the sense that “you heard that from your friend in the next town that her butcher’s sister’s cleaner’s grandma’s neighbour died”?

Inspiralcarpetry · 30/05/2020 14:55

I know someone who has tested positive with zero symptoms (random test selection) I haven't had contact with them fortunately. Testing positive came as a shock as the only place they had been was the supermarket.
I also have an old school friend who is a GP and he has been terribly ill for 7 weeks.
As an aside, I was disgusted by a bloke waiting in the queue for the supermarket with his wife (why they had to go together I don't know but anyway) he sneezed into his hand and wiped it on his shorts! His wife didn't even flinch. Bloody animal.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:01

OhTheRoses, how odd. I wonder where in London you are. (I do not expect you to post that!)

I'm on the edge of London and I'd estimate about a third to a half of families I know locally have had it. I am in an area that's had a large number of cases, but even so.

Astonished there is anyone who claims to be in London who literally knows no-one who's had it.

effingterrified · 30/05/2020 15:02

(I could understand it more easily if you live in a remote rural area - but in London? Where 17% of the population have antibodies? Confused )

Derbygerbil · 30/05/2020 15:09

Yes, unpleasant, but sneezing isn’t (as far as I’m aware) a symptom of Covid. Probably just hay fever.

Inspiralcarpetry · 30/05/2020 15:16

I know, but bloody pocket antibac gel, or antibac wipes, rather than catching it in your hands and wiping it on your clothes!
He was then going to touch stuff that others might touch (not to mention the poor checkout operator) and I think it shows the message hasn't got through to everyone about handwashing or antibac. Or he just didn't care.

EarlGreywithLemon · 30/05/2020 15:17

I’m in London and only know one person who may have had it, who ironically lives in a rural area! I know of three other people, two in London and one, once again, rural. I am taking it very very seriously though.

Inspiralcarpetry · 30/05/2020 15:18

Lol, that sounds as if he was going to touch the checkout operator. As if they don't have enough to feel stressed about currently!!
I meant items he'd touched would be handled by him/her at the checkout..Grin

EarlGreywithLemon · 30/05/2020 15:21

@effingterrified, great post by the way.

OhTheRoses · 30/05/2020 15:49

You are right effing. I shouldn't have said live in London. We did for 35 years but now live on the borders, just about oyster but have a Surrey postcode albeit the last London phone no. DH, DS and I however all work in London and our lives are London centric. Both dc went to school in London nd that's where most of their friends live too.

Actually I caught up with someone today who has had it and was tested. Now recovered so I now know one person. She claimed her dh and two dc had had it but I don't know them.

Dilemmas123 · 30/05/2020 16:12

I’m in London. I know a fairly smallish number of people who think they’ve had it but not tested. Usually they were the only person who had it in their household and felt a bit rubbish for a week or so but not worryingly so. I know of one friends relative who has died (87 years old) but that is it.
