The theory is that it is down to vitamin D. The ability of those with more melanin to produce VitD in countries at this latitude is much harder.

Certainly Vit D will end up being a big factor, but I doubt that's the whole story:

  • Some South Asian heritage communities don't seem to be following lockdown strictly.
  • Lots of black and south asian heritage people work in health care.
  • Non-white people are (on average) poorer in the UK which will correlate with other risk factors.
  • Non-white people substantially tend towards living in urban centers which have been much worse hit. I suspect this may end up being the biggest single factor.
ToffeeYoghurt · 27/05/2020 19:28

But are cases really decreasing?
I hope they are but there's no confirmed cases without tests. I've been wondering how many tests are being done at present.
The BBC article linked up thread notes it's not known.
The actual number of people tested in recent days is not known, with the government citing "technical difficulties" with data collection

It's not 'panic scaring'. Indeed it's the desperation to minimalise that got us to having one of the highest death rates in the world. If, and I say if, cases are increasing we need to acknowledge that - and perhaps this time round do something about it to mitigate the damage. Like all those other countries have done.

jasjas1973 · 27/05/2020 19:33

After 9 weeks of somewhat light touch restrictions, its not surprise our death/infection is falling BUT its declining very slowly.

Countries opening tourism are not allowing UK visitors because we are seen as high risk, like Brazil, Russia and USA.... but we all still all Back Boris :(

Deaths in community and care homes are higher than deaths in hospitals, the decision to chuck everyone out of Hospitals and not let CV patients in unless very ill, wasn't a great idea, its just spread CV around.

DivaLasVegas · 27/05/2020 19:34

I can’t believe some of you have not been touched by Coronavirus at all. I know lots of people who have had it. I’d say about 20, including my own family although not officially tested.

We lost a family member last week. It’s awful all round.

MadameMarie · 27/05/2020 19:36

Some South Asian heritage communities don't seem to be following lockdown strictly.

It's not these communities primarily that are packing out the parks and beaches etc.

Greggers2017 · 27/05/2020 19:37

@MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing we are not the worst at all. Belgium for example have taken a beating but because they have a small population their death numbers aren't high.

412 new cases today !!
rc22 · 27/05/2020 19:38

If you look at the trend across Tuesdays, it is lower than last Tuesday.

JeSuisPoulet · 27/05/2020 19:39

What is depressing as hell is that every other country in the world has a handle on this except us. Oh and USA Hmm. We know we need to test, trace and isolate. The fact we know we aren't even getting the correct figures from the government on COVID related deaths or tests that have actually been carried out is really food for thought in the 21st C when even supposed 3rd world countries are managing.

Flymetothetoon · 27/05/2020 19:41

@A1Langdownthecleghole well said!

www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/05/COVID-19-total-announced-deaths-27-May-2020.xlsx

Yet deaths in English hospitals have fallen to under 100 a day, 25 recorded yesterday.

Lordamighty · 27/05/2020 19:43

No I don’t know anyone who has been ill with it or tested positive for it. A few people I know have been tested randomly by the Govt so it will be interesting to see what the results are.

Bluntness100 · 27/05/2020 19:44

It’s not new cases or deaths today. It’s deaths reported by the various trusts for the last 24 hours. Very very few of them will have been yesterday. They will be up to a month ago.

Testing, post mortems, family permissions etc is what takes the time.

What was reported today has no bearing on how many people sadly died yesterday.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 27/05/2020 19:45

Uncle in nursing home had a positive swab test and is sadly now on end of life care. 2 work colleagues have had positive swab tests (we've been working at home for 9 weeks). SIL hospitalised with it and thankfully now recovering at home.

lilgreen · 27/05/2020 19:45

Op you can google that information.

AlabamaArkansas · 27/05/2020 19:46

I know several - all confirmed cases, but the very worst one (diabetic and in his late 60s) had 2 days of bed rest and felt a bit wiped out the a week. 3 of them said it was akin to a cold and if they hadn't known it was covid they said they would have gone to work, and 2 had no symptoms at all.

VerbenaGirl · 27/05/2020 19:47

Yes, from my daughter’s school friends, one has lost her father and another her uncle. Plus the father of a boy she was at primary school with - who had three young children. Heartbreaking.

Serin · 27/05/2020 19:51

I cant count how many people I know who have had it. I've just had a quick add up in my head and can count 11 patients who have died.
And 2 colleagues.
And a neighbour in their 20s, only "higher risk" factor is that they were from BAME background.
Are you suggesting this is made up OP??

tobee · 27/05/2020 19:51

On a slight tangent, I really hope that all the research that is being done, wrt bame people will also get to grips with why bame people are more likely to suffer with hypertension, kidney disease and diabetes etc. as we go forward.

dementedma · 27/05/2020 19:52

I dont know anyone who has caught it here. Central Scotland.

pontiouspilates · 27/05/2020 19:54

I personally know 2 people who have died from it. I have witnessed many more professionally as I am working in a Covid + bed base.

Bonkersblond · 27/05/2020 19:54

* Some South Asian heritage communities don't seem to be following lockdown strictly

It’s these communities at the beach today and other days, day tripping to the coast, set up under their gazebos, big family party/friends in groups of approx 25.

We have 'got a handle on it'. As for 3rd world countries 'managing', go and tell them that in Mumbai www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-52798740

That's exactly the sort of thing the police need to deal with. Most pictures of packed out beaches are predominantly white though.

Spillinteas · 27/05/2020 20:02

I don’t know anyone that’s had it or died of it. North west.

Lovemusic33 · 27/05/2020 20:02

If you watch the daily briefings you will see where most of the deaths are (they show charts), I’m in the SW which has the lowest amount of cases, I only know 2 people that have died of covid and they were parents of friends, people who were elderly with underlying conditions.

The numbers were higher today as f the catch up of registered deaths the bank holiday, it will come down a little in the next day or 2 but I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes back up in a few weeks after seeing how people are behaving.
