I think when we go back to work and talk to our colleagues we will find out more people have been affected by it. My grandfather died a month ago in his care home but that wasn't something I was going to announce to my colleagues over a zoom call but will probably come up in face to face conversation. I know when I was at school over Easter one of my colleagues aunts had also died of it, not someone who I would casually be in contact with so otherwise I wouldn't know.

microhorse · 27/05/2020 20:04

In all total honesty, there are nearly 8 billion humans on the planet, the "pandemic" isn't really affecting our population. About 0.00005% of the world has died due to coronavirus. Nothing. Humans are a pandemic to the world, we've caused more animal deaths.
Part of nature's way of sticking the middle finger up at humans.

GinFling · 27/05/2020 20:11

@Bluntness100 it continues to shock me how few people actually realise this, and continue to think that the numbers reported reflect the previous day’s deaths. Some of the 412 will have died as far back as April, even March. It is of course no less tragic knowing this, but it does help to give some perspective.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 27/05/2020 20:12

Both my parents died of it in the last few weeks - North West area.

IncrediblySadToo · 27/05/2020 20:16

@tabulahrasa

My friend’s nephew died yesterday, in his twenties. He was diagnosed with what should have been a very treatable form of cancer about 4 weeks ago, but caught covid in hospital...
Heartbreaking Xx

This is why SO much 'other treatment' has been stopped. Not because 'only Covid matters' but because going to hospital & a lot of treatments increase the risk of people dying.

Heartbreaking cruelty if the bastard virus

GingerScallop · 27/05/2020 20:17

Al1Langdownthecleghole Am so very sorry for your loss and everyone else who has lost a loved one.

I remember early on saying to DH I wish they stopped saying X had underlying conditions. It was blame shifting and false comfort for those without underlying conditions. I almost wished they had been saying: S/he has left loved ones including z,X,v and is sorely missed. The left loved ones and the lost life were lacking in that narrative

Jenasaurus · 27/05/2020 20:19

The whole of my team are grieving for this lovely man, he wasn't old, had no underlying health conditions, such a waste of a life.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-52653490

Tragically this was one of 4 deaths at the same hospital all in the same week due to the virus.

VeryQuaintIrene · 27/05/2020 20:21

My mum for one. Condolences to all who have lost beloved people.

VeryQuaintIrene · 27/05/2020 20:22

And microhorse aka microempathy - quite possibly true, but really not helpful now.

Zilla1 · 27/05/2020 20:24

I don't pay too much attention to statistics relating to positive tests or admitted to acute, given these are dependent on government policy like changing testing and admissions criteria.

For what it's worth, chatting with colleagues and using rule of thumb numbers for the size of our practice and patient group, the numbers of patients we know who have died from COVID vastly exceeds the numbers that we'd expect based on pro-rata regional official COVID death figures. Add to this the number of 'spontaneous' cardiovascular deaths we suspect actually relate to COVID. We suspect the meaningful figures will be 'all cause mortality' and 'excess deaths' (was this c60,000 recently?).

LordyLordy1 · 27/05/2020 20:24

What do people expect? It's the result of people not observing lockdown on VE Day/ weekend and gradually doing what the heck they want. I lost count of the people NOT social distancing that weekend and having parties in their gardens.

GuppytheCat · 27/05/2020 20:25

In the past week, a close friend’s sister and a teacher at my teenager’s school have died (separate areas).

Zilla1 · 27/05/2020 20:25

Sorry to hear that VeryQuaint and others. Condolences.

SweetLikeChocolateBoy · 27/05/2020 20:25

There has been no sudden jump despite the 412 reported fatalities today, it was a catch up from the Bank Holiday.

It's still a decline on 2 weeks ago. Daily comparisons are pointless!

363, 494, 649, 795, 837, 842, 1034. (Previous Weds)

2013 infections - a v. encouraging trend.

IncrediblySadToo · 27/05/2020 20:29

Yes, but people who die today, will be recorded on other days in the future. It's the only 'measurement' we have

Repeatedly Saying 'they didn't die yesterday' is pointless. Their deaths were recorded yesterday.

We get the actual 'date of death' on the ONS figures, but there's a lag on that information

effingterrified · 27/05/2020 20:36

iwantmyownicecreamvan - so sorry for your loss.

That must be absolutely devastating. Flowers

IHateCoronavirus · 27/05/2020 20:38

So the NW is a bit behind London in numbers but the rate is higher, is that because it is less densely populated? If so is the NW doing a worse job at containing it?
I’m in the NW Shock

Collision · 27/05/2020 20:38

Consultant from Frimley hospital died of it yesterday.

effingterrified · 27/05/2020 20:38

And condolences also to VeryQuaintIrene and Al1Langdownthecleghole and everyone else on this thread and elsewhere who has lost family members.

IHateCoronavirus · 27/05/2020 20:39

So sorry to all of you who have lost loved ones. I know of six people who have died but no one in my close family or circle of friends.

Collision · 27/05/2020 20:39

And yet my brother is currently pissing me off saying it’s massively overhyped.

BeingonFBdoesntmakeittrue · 27/05/2020 20:40

Why would some people not be personally effected (as in knowing someone who has been confirmed to have it or died from it)?.

It depends where you live.

I live in Bristol. Population almost 500,000, but only 700 confirmed cases and just over 200 deaths so it would be unusual for most to personally know one person with it, let alone several. And Bristol is a travel hub with a dense population and a high 'not white British' population (1 in 5).

COVID cases in ICU in the biggest hospital (over 1,000 beds normally but many closed in preparation) never got above a pod of 4. Obviously there were more COVID cases on wards but never close to being overwhelmed. We've also got an unused 300 bed Nightingale Hosp.

RainbowMum11 · 27/05/2020 20:40

I know quite a few deaths locally sadly, Derbyshire.

bananaskinsnomnom · 27/05/2020 20:44

Flowers for all who have lost someone and have someone suffering - my heart to you all. Whilst I haven’t lost a friend or relative to Covid, I have lost family and friends in the past to other horrible things, my condolences to you all Flowers

A friends grandfather has passed away in their care home last week. We chatted, I have to say I automatically assumed it was Covid. She said no, he had dementure and he was 93. But his death certificate says cause of death is Covid 19. He showed no symptoms and was never even tested for it. She’s pretty baffled. So am I.

I’m not taking away the loss from anyone. But the above has left me even more confused.

I, like many, am about to come out of lockdown and go back to school. The next few weeks will be interesting. Hopefully for the better

AnnieCartwright · 27/05/2020 20:48

Do you know if anybody that as died from it? As I don’t

I was redeployed to ITU. Yes, people have died. Plenty.
